Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I would say that about 75% of people stayed for the ceremony. Much of the field level cleared out but the loge, mezz and upper levels stayed mostly full. The ceremony was nicely done. Most everyone held it together and there was less booing than I thought.I know the reason *why* they were there but given that the Mets loss, the police-state on the edge of the field (including the horses, to boot!) was disrespectful to the ceremony going on.I'm sure there's tons more that could be said about this game but that'll have to wait for another day and some perspective, I think.

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 The ceremony was nice. I bawled like a baby.I don't even know what to say about this team, these last couple of weeks, this season. I keep writing responses to some of the other posts around here, but then I just delete them without posting them.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 metsguyinmichigan - "In all seriousness, I'm so far away from other Mets fans. This is as close as I get to watching a game with friends. Gentleman, this season has been a pleasure to spend with you, I appreciate having all you and I thank you."I echo this sentiment. I have been fortunate enough to have attended a few games over the years. I have met many of the people from the forum and I am proud to say they are fine group of individuals. I plan on coming up for a game (or two) at Citi Field next year and look forward to again seeing friends and hopefully meeting a few more forum members. It's a shame that once again we won't have the pleasure of some post season IGT's.
Guest KC Guests Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 The ceremony for me was a 7 out of 10. They wasted too much time puttingup those stupid things in the outfield. I called the metfairy who was up onelevel from me and went up and watched with them.I have to admit I cried a little walking down the ramps by myself and whenI took my last step out of the godforsaken hell hole of a ballpark I was prettychoked up.I found myself getting emotional a couple of times during the game. My lastthis at Shea, my last that. My last clapping to Lazy Mary, my last sticking tothe bathroom floors, my last beer (thanks to Mr. Rogers), and then that lasttrip down the ramps.Truth be told, I'm glad the fucking season is over. I don't think they would have made much noise in the playoffs and it would have just been anotherup and down week of being emotionally spent.Long day, I was there from 9 in the morning until past 6:30.
Guest themetfairy Guests Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 The ceremony wasn't what it should have been. But neither was the season. That said, I would not have wanted to be anywhere else or with any other people than where I was and who I was with today. It was emotional, and I need to decompress. But I'm glad to have been there in good company for the bitter end.
Guest cooby Guests Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 soupcan, I think you will regret not staying
Guest mario25 Guests Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I liked the ceremony and it did cheer me up after a shitty Mets weekend. I was shocked the Mets couldnt get it done this last 2 weeks but also proud they were still in it after tons of bullpen blowups.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Jeff Wilpon"I feel totally different about this year than last , last year we under achieved while this year we over-achieved"..
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Jeff can go suck on it, but he's right. This team just wasn't that good. They made a run, and it sucks that it wasn't enough, but it just wasn't. Ultimately, with all the cockpunch losses they've had this year, all they needed was one -- at any point, not just this weekend -- to make a difference. And it didn't happen.

DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I'll say it again: four years, four meaningless games. Silver linings. That's all I gots.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Pretty to very good ceremonies. Even if there was some cheesiness, it was moving. I went crazy for every Met who never comes back.Game speaks for itself.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 As good as the ceremonies were after the game, I am somehow still stuck on what was done on the Diamondvision at the end of the first inning. In many ways, it was more effective than anything else the Mets did today. It was a video announced as "Mr. Met says goodbye to Shea Stadium." I think there was a sponsor on the title card but the rest of it -- lasting about two minutes -- was mercifully sponsor-free.Scene:An empty Shea Stadium. Mr. Met stands at home plate, carrying a Mets duffle bag, which he puts on the ground next to the plate. He stops, and takes a look around at the big place.Mr. Met walks out towards the mound. He looks towards right field, and we see in flashback the Ventura grand slam. He continues towards second base, and as looks towards left field, we see the Endy catch in flashback. He continues walking towards centerfield, and he looks back at first base -- we see the flashback of Buckner. He reaches the warning track, looks up, and sees the Piazza home run. Looks to the left and sees Cleon catch the ball to end the series. On the warning track, he bends down and scoops some dirt into a Shea Stadium tin, and puts the tin in his duffle bag. He turns around to look back at the stadium. A wistful sigh, a short wave, and he walks through the gate at 410.
Guest Iubitul Guests Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 It was good to hang out with Metfairy, Kase and G-fafif again, and it was great meeting g-wreck and Metsgirl. I feel hung over, and I only had a half a glass of that Reyes wine....Moved pictures to new thread, since they will be from different games

Guest Iubitul Guests Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 you sure you want me to post that?

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Minaya talked yesterday about the need to keep putting a winning product on the field , about how the brand is good and the ratings are up , about how over 4 million plus fans came to the games. Minaya acknowledged that this team needs to find a way to win more games. As the GM I suppose it's part of his job to worry about the brand ,a s a fan I see one post-season in his four years. Not saying he hasn't done a good job but he needs to do better.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Omar's "brand" discussion pissed me off. It's as if he was justifying the standings by saying that the team is making a boat load of money. What do we care if the "brand" is solid?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 I really liked the closing ceremonies. Nicely understated. I'd say it was just short of perfect. The only two changes I'd have made:I would have had a moment where Jerry Koosman and Jesse Orosco shook hands on the mound to commemorate those two World's Championships. And when Seaver threw the final pitch to Piazza (a GREAT idea, by the way) I would have had Keith Hernandez in the batter's box. (With the take sign, of course.)If there was a Mount Rushmore of Mets players, Tom, Mike, and Keith would be three of the heads. We still need to establish the fourth; perhaps it will be David Wright.

metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 agreed. i loved the walking off the field together thing. i just wonder what they were talking about...i'm sure it was about how badly tom bounced the pitch, and some memories of games at shea, and the history of tehir shared franchise, but in my head, i could just imagine them saying "peas and carots. peas and carrots. peas and carrots? peas and carrots... peas and carrots... peas... and carrots."

Two guys, a longtime fan and an ex-ballplayer, are sitting in the stands together before the start of a game.Upon seeing two players standing in the outfield in the sun, enjoying a conversation, the fan says, "What a glorious moment. two players, in the prime of life, enjoying the beautiful sun, reminiscing about past success..."The ex-player replies, "eh, they're probably talking about broads..."
