Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2008 Author Posted September 22, 2008 I never wish bad things to happen to people, but if you were going to make a listof those you suspect might wind up drunk and dead in a ditch on the side of the roadwhile his new bride (his 5th I believe) sat home alone on Christmas Day there aren't a whole lot of candidates you'd put there prior to Martin.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2008 Author Posted September 22, 2008 Just saying that that's how Martin died (see article above) out driving around with his drinking buddy on Xmas Day while his new wife sat home alone. And that if you were going to pick someone most likely to wind up in that situation, it would be Billy.

metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 i feel like i'm totally missing out on a huge chunk of the conversation here... what the hell does billy martin have to do with anything, and what girl?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 ="soupcan"]This girl. And I'm guessing that Billy Martin was mentioned because his uniform number, 1, matches the current tragic number for the Yankees.
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Mike Francesa just mentioned something about the Yankees having another Stadium closing event in November. Don't know what is involved. I wish I was kidding.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 ah.... silly picture of girl with bad teeth didnt come through the internets at work.i dont feel like my life has been vastly improved by having now had the opportunity to gaze upon her.

metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 jeez, i hope leyritz'll be free that day...
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2008 Author Posted September 22, 2008 Leyritz was apparently there last night but was not mentioned in the intros.Clemens and Torre were also neither mentioned nor shown on the various highlight films.

HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Why did Billy only last one year (a 97-win year) with the Twins?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Same reason he rarely lasted more than a year or two with any team, he couldn't get along with anyone.I don't remember if the fist-fight he had with one of his pitchers was the last straw or just one of several.I was at a dinner one time when sportswriter Dick Young did a tribute to Billy by singing;'God Don't Make Little Green Apples and I Can't Manage Minneapolis in the Summertime'

Some swift action on your part and my childhood would have been salvaged! Edited September 23, 2008 by Guest

IIRC the book The Bronx Is Burning actually delves more into it, where it seems there was a bit of an uprising from fans in Minny (I believe it was Minny as opposed to his next stop, Detroit) where they were upset that he was fired.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 "E"-Day comes for the Yanx just minutes before winning their 10th in 11 games.I was wondering if there was a news blackout on YES but apparently they did mention it before the game was over.First time in a completed season since the first year of Bill Clinton's 1st administration.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 It's the long-awaited VY Day!Someone should photoshop a Mets cap on that sailor's head.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 It's kind of funny but as long as the MFYs aren't in the playoffs they sort of become irrelevant to me. Like, I used to check in on their games between innings just for the pleasure of seeing them lose when they did. Now, who gives a F.I think this means the Mets have clearly surpassed the MFYs as the town's best team. I mean, that was pretty clear all year long.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Wow, he even gets the girl when his team gets eliminated. Some guys have all the luck.
