There�s been no formal announcement from the Mets, but all signs continue to point to Brian Stokes starting Saturday for the Mets against Florida. The Mets don�t want to expose 21-year-old lefthander Jon Niese to the Marlins� predominantly righty lineup. And the decision about which veteran to promote ended up pretty straightforward. Even though Claudio Vargas is not thought to be seriously injured, he was pulled from his last start � a scoreless effort � with grabbing in his elbow. Meanwhile, Nelson Figueroa has been dealing with a blister issue. Stokes has bullpen experience with the Rays, so it would figure he�d stick around after his start.

I share the same last name as one former Met great of recent vintage , although the spelling is slightly different , which probably disqualifies me. This player might well be known more for being a MFY great now though.

OK it seems to me that Duan's last name is Stokes....and he works for Hot Press who's long time editor shares that last name , although I can't imagine him as a baseball fan.

Sort of surprised to find out that there hasn't been a Major Leaguer with my last name to debut since 1895. I thought Connor was a reasonably common name.

There have been 5 with an added "O'", 3 with an added "s", and two active players using it as a first name, albeit one with a missing "n".

This also has probably been the most time I've ever spent thinking about my surname, and now it's starting to look funny in print.

It's a stretch too because while the pronounciation is the same, the spelling is very different.

Art's definitely not a bad guy to 'share' a name with, but I was once asked if he and I were related.
