SCHAEFER METS PLAYER AND PITCHERS OF THE MONTH, JULY 2008

The Schaefer Mets Player of the Month for July 2008 is CARLOS DELGADO. This is the second time that Carlos has been Player of the Month. (He previously won in September 2006.) Delgado led the Mets in July with 9 home runs and 24 runs batted in. He batted .357 (second to Fernando Tatis, .397), slugged .714 (second to Tatis' .767 and his OBP of .445 was also bested only by Tatis, who had a .463. Jose Reyes also had a strong month, batting .336 and leading the Mets with 39 hits. David Wright hit .317 and led the club with 26 runs and 21 walks and tied with Reyes for the club lead in doubles with 9.

The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Month for July 2008 is MIKE PELFREY. This is Mike's first ever Schaefer award. He went 4-1 in July with a 2.70 ERA in 6 starts. His 40 innings led the team and his 28 strikeouts were third, behind Oliver Perez (36) and John Maine (28). During a month when the Mets won 18 games, Pelfrey was the only pitcher to win more than 2.

And the Schaefer Mets Relief Pitcher of the Month is AARON HEILMAN. This is Aaron's first Schaefer award; he narrowly edged Billy Wagner for July's honors. Heilman led the Mets' bullpen in games with 16, innings with 16.1 and strikeouts with 21. He was 1-1 with a 4.41 ERA. Wagner, in 12 games, had no wins or losses but saved 9 games and had a 2.08 ERA.

I had a feeling that Delagdo was going to win the PoTM for July, it was a close toss up between him and Tatis for me. Also not surprised that Pelfrey and Heilman got PoTM and RPoTM, both had very good months.

Love the horizontal Heilman card. It's Aaron versus the world. For month, at least, Aaron prevailed.

That was the year (1973?) of cards with off-center subjects?

Way to capture that.

A-Heil is '74. The others are '75.

A request to BG to consider expanding the portfolio for future Schaefer winners to include designs from '67 and '70. Both are personal favorites.

I love all the cards, but as stated here, having Aaron off center like that is a brilliant touch.

Reminds me of the days I'd rip open a pack, get to a card and go "Wow! Kool!" :)

I'll consider it. I guess I'm inclined to go with the cards I'm most fond of, which are the 1971, 1972, and 1973 sets. I continued buying cards into the 80's before I tired of the whole thing, but to me, the coolest cards are the ones that were issued when I was 8, 9, and 10 years old.

Also, it's harder to find photos that go with those earlier years, before action shots were used. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the first year we saw players in action on standard Topps cards was 1971, and I think those were always full-body shots taken from a distance.

The '67 Topps' just might be my all-time favorites also, although I was too young to collect that set when it was originally out. An elegant, uncluttered design ... players' faces usually occupy at least 20% of the card ... all poses but I never did like those action shots where the player's head is not even half the size of a dime.

Yeah, it will be nearly impossible to find quality photos of modern players in poses like those. (I do like how all three photos were clearly taken at Shea.

What I really like about those '67 Topps' is the large canvas; how the photo takes up almost the entire card and doesn't compromise any space for text. They remind me of the great Sporting News covers from the late '60's through the mid 70's, or the classic Sports Illustrated covers before that mag started cluttering up its' covers with so much type, you could hardly see what the hell picture was on the cover anymore.

Stupid question from someone who's been around three years: do you have to vote for every game, or can you vote in some/note vote in others? I want to participate. I feel like I'm missing the fun.

Also, Maury Wills in that baseball card looks about 66 years old. Kind of like this guy:

BTW, I didn't create that mock Franco card. (Though I would never pass up the opportunity to otherwise mock Franco!). Apparently in the 1990's, there was a magazine that would create cards of contemporary baseball players in the format of older style Topps cards.

It is and good eyeballs. I know that '70 set inside out. Those were the first cards I ever collected, and I believe that those cards dominated my life that year. I got a horizontal Mets team picture with the "Worlds Champions" designation over the top in the very first pack I ever bought. Some way to start, huh?

The '68 lettering on the mock Murray is off, too.

Stupid question from someone who's been around three years: do you have to vote for every game, or can you vote in some/note vote in others? I want to participate. I feel like I'm missing the fun.

Also, Maury Wills in that baseball card looks about 66 years old. Kind of like this guy:

No, you don't have to vote in every game.

If you want to freshen up on the voting rules, check out this thread:

The 1972 Seaver is my favorite card of all time.

The 1974 Heilman mock-up was outstanding. And count me among the people stunned to see him there. That must be a steady case of 1 and 2 points a game adding up.

Interesting. That explains why my favorite cards of all time are 1984 Topps. (9 years old)

Let's talk numbers. I haven't been voting. My life's been complicated, and my voting system was overcomplicated. I'll jump back in this month.

But, if I may, how is Fernando merely the seventh best Met in July?

="G-Fafif"]Well, they both like to bunt.

Yes, and it's a real (ahem) drag when one of those two does so.

There's a sweet Ozzie Sweet look to some of those cards, too.

I think in this case quantity triumphed over quality. Heilman pitched in four games more than Wagner did. He earned points in 12 different games, earning more than 1 point on July 9, 11, and 29. Wagner earned points in 10 games, and the only one in which he earned a full point or more was July 26, when he pitched 2 innings and got no decision. In his one-inning saves, he earned his most points, 0.91, on July 11 and as little as 0.46 on July 23.

Mike Pelfrey, in five starts, earned 5.45, 5.04, 4.64, 4.38, and 1.04 points.
Oliver Perez had five starts and earned 4.96, 3.84, 3.5, 3.44 , and 2.42 points.

Yeah, but that's his actual 1970 rookie card, so that doesn't count.

The 1972 Seaver is my favorite card of all time.

The 1974 Heilman mock-up was outstanding. And count me among the people stunned to see him there. That must be a steady case of 1 and 2 points a game adding up.

Nice one! You're looking kinda Francoish yourself these days.

I sometimes hate the way these Met ranked avatars change so frequently. I look at the Franco pic, and I assume it's Vic Sage.

Great job! Love the lack of cap and almost team-indifferent gear. That's 1970 Topps all the way.

Forever high on the '72 Seaver, since it was a Kid Rock special -- took all summer long to track it down.

Also in everlasting love with this one:

Favorite cards 1 and 1A, I'd say.

BTW, I didn't create that mock Franco card. (Though I would never pass up the opportunity to otherwise mock Franco!). Apparently in the 1990's, there was a magazine that would create cards of contemporary baseball players in the format of older style Topps cards.

Now that you mention it, I thought the font was the tiniest bit off on METS on Franco.

Kudos for bringing it to the class' attention.
