I'm assuming that's the most. OE: It is the most.

'86 is also the high mark for total Mets selections at 5, since El Sid made the team.

If Pujols is injured does the start automatically fall to the next highest vote-getter or does the manager have some leeway there?

I'm guessing if the Mets already have 4 starters (LoDuca, Wright, Beltran, Reyes) that if its up to (who is the Houston manager - Bill Virdon?) the manager then Carlos D. doesn't get the start.

Ekspecially if Glavine gets the call.

It depends on when he last pitched. Assuming he's rested, sure, but if he pitches on Sunday, no.

Mets still in line to send four (possibly five) starters.

But the non-MFY AL All Stars need your help.

Ichiro has just moved ahead of Johnny Damon for the third and final outfield spot (and quite frankly, with a .365 BA, he deserves it). Go vote now and make sure he doesn't relinquish his lead.

While you're there, vote for:

Mark Loretta - Second Base
-currently trails Robinson Cano

Miguel Tejada - Shortstop
-currently trails Jeter...wtf? Captain Asseater has 5 HR's.

Mike Lowell - Third Base
-currently trails A-Rod. Lead is huge...and even we have to admit, A-Rod probably deserves the spot.

Oh, and a voting confession...every year I blindly vote for all Mets. This was the first year I can remember voting for a non-Met to start. With all due respect to Paul LoDuca, I voted for Mike Piazza.

Old habits die hard.

While we're at it, the Red Sox bias bugs me. Varitek over Mauer? I scoff.

Ka-CHING!
Beltran gets $100K if he makes the All Star game, and another $100K if he gets the most votes in the league.
Looks like he won't get that second hunnert grand, even if Pujols is caught in compromising photos with Osama Bin Laden.

Wondering if I've missed something, but how has Carlos Delgado only been an all-star twice? Is he a second half kind of guy?

- because 1st base is always the toughest competition
- because he played mostly in Canada
- and because voting is a flawed process

I got around to voting last night.
It won't make a bit of difference (I have no patience to sit there and vote the max 25 times you're allowed) but I just wanted to strike a blow for those having good years but are getting ignored for various reasons and are getting their asses kicked by often less-deserving MFYs & BoSoxers,

AL:
1B - Hafner
2B - Loretta
SS - Tejada
3B - Glaus
OF: Sizemore, Wells, Rios (had to write him in!!)
C: Mauer

NL:
1B - Pujols (if he's still injured then someone else takes it)
2B - Utley
SS - Renterea
3B - Wright
OF Beltran, Bay, Holliday
C - McCann

Also Toronto was usually represented by a pitcher like Roger Clemens or Doc Haliday

First base has a lot of sluggers usually. Are you sure it's not that he's only been voted by the fans twice? That would make more sense to me.

He's played in two All-Star games. He may have been on the team in other years but didn't get into the game.

Not terribly likely, though. These days it seems like everybody gets into the game.

I don't buy the second two reasons just because in picking reserves, hopefully, the managers wouldn't be swayed by where the player played or the votes of the fans.

Some first basemen named to the All-Star game ahead of Delgado since 1997.

Mark McGwire
Mo Vaughn
Tino Martinez
Ron Coomer (perhaps as the Twins lone rep.)
Tony Clark (Tigers lone rep?)
Mike Sweeney (like 5 times. Lone KC rep?)
Jason Giambi (5 times)
Ken Harvey (who? Oh yeah. Need someone from KC)

2005 NL: Derek Lee only first basemen named (Pujols was DH).

Seems to be the victim of stiff competition for the position from popular players combined with the need to have all clubs represented. Not that I particlarly give a hoot, but I was just kind of surprised, as he always seemed to me one of the top hitters in the game over the last ten years.

No kidding. Leafing through the Mets media guide during the game, saw that only Manny and Slappy have more RBIs then Delgado for the period 1998-2005.

Delgado is often a second-half hitter, which I think is the primary explanation after the roster crunches mentioned above.

Funny...MLB is encouraging folks to stuff the ballot box:

Thank you for voting for your favorite players on the
Monster.com 2006 All-Star Game Online Ballot.

We invite you to return to the ballot on MLB.com and
vote up to twenty-five times. Your vote counts, and may
help your favorite players get to the All-Star Game
in Pittsburgh.

More often you vote, the more often you look at ads.

I get a monster.com ad with the ballot. Like they know that me using the internet to vote 25 times means that I'm going to need a job soon.

The other day I was in WaMart.
They had All Star ballots and a box to put them in. After you voted, they gave you an "I voted" sticker with the MLB logo on it.

How big a nerd do you have to be to walk around with an MLB "I voted" sticker on your shirt?

(CF discreetly removes sticker, crumples it up and drops it under his chair)

Do you have regional numbers too?

No, but given his surge along with Jason Bay becoming the #1 outfielder, and the location of the game this year being Pittsburgh, it seems pretty logical.

And both Wilson and Bay have been spotted wearing their motorcycle helmets in the on-deck circle.
