Gary, btw, turns 68 today for those who were wondering [Ronnie turns 66 later this summer, Keith 74 in October]*.

His Wikipedia page is fairly thin, but looking through it I stumbled across one 'Huh!' moment: that while at Columbia he occasionally broadcast their soccer games along with fellow student George Stephanopolous.

* and Murph is 41

Not watching this game. But I think a fair second guess is bringing Manaea in with men on versus a clean inning.

Well, Gary & Murph debated whether Peterson loading the bases was going to be his last batter. But he was left in and promptly issued his third walk of the inning (this one with bases loaded) and that's when Mendy called for Manaea.

That's why I said above that Mendoza could be blamed for both pulling Peterson too early and sticking with him too long. Both options turned out to be lousy.

Last inning, Melendez, with two runners on and no out, down 9-1 with a 2-0 count swung at a knuckle curve out of the strike zone.

Madness.

But either way, he passed on the third way, which would have been bringing in a reliever experienced in relieving, and presumably experienced in entering a game with runners on base.

Raley, for instance.

Then, one way or another, Manaea can take over at the top of the next inning.

Maybe this is the time to break the seal on Slater.

If he gets in this game, maybe he can be the one to call a team meeting.

Still searching for rock bottom.  Have to fire Mendoza soon so it doesn’t happen when the team is in Anaheim.

Yeah, don't want another West Coast firing

The beat writers would be complaining that he was canned as a time inconvenient to the eastern time zone.

I don't think they felt a whole lot toward Willie, so much as they made their personal complaint (the Mets made a big move after we all filed our stories!) about Willie (the Mets fired this prince of a man!).

Howie confessing that he knows little more about Star Wars than he knows about Princess Bride.

Who's our emergency middle infielder who will pitch the 9th?

How quickly can you get to the park?

The radio booth is torturing themselves to stay engaged.

Howie keeps calling Jorge Polanco "Placido Polanco."

About Placido, he confesses, "I never met him, I never liked him, he never played for the Mets, and I can't get the stooge out of my head."

Looking for a different way to describe this mess.
has anyone used “ grotesque “ yet?

Mauricio sets an ML record for swinging and missing at the 17th pitch that was at least one foot out of the strike zone in the same game.

I think you have to cut bait on both of them. Peterson is 30 and isn't going to get better, and his $8M is not such a salary hit that it kills you. Manaea's $25mx2 is worse, admittedly, but he's shot.

Peterson is a free agent at the end of the year and has actually had some success in the bullpen.  There’s plenty of reasons to keep him around and yes, he probably can be moved in a trade also.

Manaea needs a thorough evaluation to see if he’s actually healthy.  He never got those loose bodies in his elbow fixed, right?  One would think a long IL stint and slow ramp-up is the path with him.

The drop in velocity tells you Manaea is hurt.  Peterson, sheesh, I dunno.

Mendoza NOT getting fired after last night means he's probably going to last out the season, whatever fresh hell that brings for him and us.
