Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 2 Posted March 2 While the teams fine-tune their acts with exhibitions against MLB teams, pool play begins tomorrow with Chinese Taipei taking on Australia.Looks like a cakewalk through pool play for the United States. metirish Old-Timey Member Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Why isn't Ireland able to field a team of Irish American players with a sprinkle of home grown players ? Apparently Baseball Ireland requires dual citizenship, a pity as I think an Ireland team would be good for the WBChttps://irishbaseball.org/help-ireland-get-to-the-world-baseball-classic/
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 2 Author Posted March 2 They have put together solid teams in the past with diaspora Americans, but they just couldn't pull off admission to the finals this time.I think, across the board, rosters are tightening up to keep ringers out, though.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 2 Author Posted March 2 The real tragedy is the double standard on protectorates. The Netherlands gets to stuff their team with Curaçaoans but the US cannot call their Puerto Ricans to come play for the motherland.Debuting this year for The Netherlands is the double-barreled action of Andruw Jones managing and son Druw Jones in center.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted March 2 Posted March 2 But we do have the wealth of talent from American Samoa at our disposal.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 3 Author Posted March 3 Some heavy controversy (which is always good) as Tarik Skubal has kind of bailed on the Americans. His participatio,n along with that of Paul Skenes, seemed to set up a devastating one-two cockpunch of a combo, but it has been announced that he will only be participating in only one game — against the un-imposing Great Britain team — before returning to Tiger Camp, to learn how to be a better Tiger. To which all good Americans cried, "Tarik, we could have pitched Michael Wacha against Great Britain! Give us something we can use!!"
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 4 Author Posted March 4 I overlooked him above, but the Nicaragua team is also deploying light-hitting Binghamtom infielder Kevin Villavicencio.Kevin is Mexico-born but I guess he comes from a Nicaragua background. Team Nicaragua deployed him late in yesterday's game, in left field, and he went 1-for-1.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 4 Posted March 4 If the U.S. doesn't win then Trump is going to slap a punitive tariff on the country which does.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted March 4 Posted March 4 If the U.S. doesn't win then Trump is going to slap a punitive tariff on the country which does. Or bomb them and murder innocent people under the guisethat they were a national security threat.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 4 Posted March 4 He already f**ked around by denying visas to the executives of the Cuban team. I'm not sure if that was resolved yet.Later
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted March 5 Posted March 5 I am rooting for Nolan McLean, Clay Holmes and Team USA!!!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 5 Author Posted March 5 Pool C action is under way as Australia "hosts" Chinese Taipei under the bright lights of The Tokyo Dome.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 5 Author Posted March 5 Australia's 3-0 opener victory over Chinese Taipei is being reported as a "huge" upset.I did not know this was supposed to be such a mismatch. Taiwan produces terrific Little League teams, but I have not been as impressed by their adult teams.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Japan, today, run-ruled Taipei 13-0 in 7 innings (10 runs in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd)Single, double, and GS and 5 RBI for Ohtani in the first two innings alone. Meanwhile, play gets going tonight on this side of the Pacific with - Puerto Rico v Colombia (FS1) currently 4-0 PR in the 5th. Game at Hiram Bithorn stadium in San Juan P.R.- USA v Brazil (FOX - 8 PM) in Houston at (apparently it's being called Daikin Park this week)- Nicaragua v Dominican Republic (FS2) from Miami, just underway.- earlier today Venezuela beat Netherlands 6-2
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 7 Author Posted March 7 So, the danger of Team Chinese Taipei was greatly exaggerated.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted March 7 Posted March 7 I am rooting for Nolan McLean, Clay Holmes and Team USA!!! I wonder how I will feel watching the games. But right now I’m terrified of McLean getting hurt. I’d be fine with him pitching well in one game then the US getting eliminated before he has to pitch again.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Tarik Skubal = 1st pitch of the game HR to Great Britain (to a guy I think who was a Newcastle coal miner until few months ago).

That's where our guys get injured more severely.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 8 Posted March 8 The same week Edwin Diaz was famously injured while celebrating during the WBC, Rhys Hoskins of the (then) Phils was injured in a non-contact play while attempting to field a grounder and, like Diaz, missed the entire season. The idea that those participating in the WBC are more likely to get injured appears to be nothing more than a case of pre-confirmation bias.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Clay Holmes with two scoreless innings including FIVE KsUK still leading 1-0 vs USMeanwhile, down in San Juan, PR, Panama is on the verge of an upset of Puerto RicoLeading 2-1 with one out in the bottom of the 9th
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 8 Author Posted March 8 Youse worry warts are missing the forest for the trees. Why youse all are wrapping Mets #5 starter Nolan McLean in bubble wrap, #7 starter Robert Stock has been sent home by Team Israel with shoulder discomfort.Team USA, meanwhile, just went up 3-1, with Clay Homes currently the pitcher of record on the winning side, having just torn through two perfect innings with five strikeouts.TAKE THAT, YOU REDCOATS!!!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 8 Author Posted March 8 Three more runs in the sixth, and this is turning into a rout for Team Wacha.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 8 Author Posted March 8 Brad Keller on to pitch the ninth for USA.Brad Keller — when you just can't risk Michael Wacha.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Down 3-1 w/two outs in the 9th and a runner on 1st, Netherlands hits a routine grounder towards 3rd ... but it doinks off the base and over the head of the 3B-man for a double.Next up Ozzie Albies: 3R Walk-off! Netherlands 4 - Nicaragua 3That was last night. This morning (or whatever time/day it currently is in Tokyo) the Aussies are up 1-0 against host Japan in bottom 7th.Japan has already secured a pass into the next round but they Shirley don't want to lose in front of the home folks and this does matter much to the folks down under. And as I'm typing, Australia fails to turn a 3-6-1 inning-ending GiDP (clanked off the pitcher's glove) and Japan immediately follows with a 2R HR.2-1 Japan, heading to the 8th.
Elian Pena St. Lucie Mets - A SS In St. Lucie's Wednesday doubleheader, the 18-year-old shortstop went 3-for-7 with a walk and his 7th and 8th doubles. He's hitting .346/.460/.481 (.941). Also 8 steals in 9 attempts. Explore Elian Pena News >
