Why are you benching Tyrone Taylor in the first game of the season?

I did not know Tyrone Tayor was enough of a lineup fixture that one could describe him not being in the lineup as being "benched." I figured that, for him, it would just be Thursday.

As for O'Hearn, he is coming off his best season, but he isn't that good, and he dropped off considerably after going to the Padres at the deadline. Mark Vientos may be sub-optimal, but I'd take him over O'Hearn in 2026 four times out of five, as well as eight times out of 10, and 16 (or maybe 17) times out of twenty.

I agree that Vientos has the potential to be better than O'Hearn, but for the Pirates 1st base slot, O'Hearn was a nice upgrade.

Hopefully, Vientos will regain the form he displayed in 2024. I think he will likely split the 1st base/DH slots with Polanco.

The removal of Ji Hwan Bae from the Mets' 40-Player Roster robs Tyrone Taylor of the best candidate to be his platoon partner, launching Tyrone into the OD lineup, at least for the time being.

The good news for the Mets is that the Buccos have not jacked up in the interim.

If Jared Young is the opening day DH, it means someone in the Mets' front office forgot to finish doing their job this winter.

Young may not be the weakest spot in the lineup. (I'm looking at you, Tyrone Taylor.)

Likely, if Kyle Tucker comes into the fold, it starts a cascade along the lines of Tuckywucky being the new rightfielder, Soto going to left, Polanco coming in and playing first, Vientos moving to DH, and Young to the bench (assuming he even remains on the roster should such a signing occur).

FUN FACT: While Jorge Polanco has totaled zero innings at first base in his Major and Minor League careers, he has, in fact appeared at the cold corner exactly once. With two out in the ninth on April sixth of this year, Seattle manager Dan Wilson juggled his defense to keep Wilmer Flores from driving in the winning run, only to see Wilmer knock one right past the over-shifted second-baseman on the very first pitch.

The Polanco-as-leftfielder thesis remains unpopular with virtually everybody outside of Mets Roster Central, and even those inside the lucky circle think it's a longshot. It is nonethless their speculative lineup based on:

2. the great degree of silence from the Mets on how they plan to align this bunch,
4. the current paucity of outfielders,


6. the paucity of infielders who, if put out there, are likely to justify themselves with the bat,


8. lack of belief in Baty as a better defensive option,


10. Carson Benge still having several players to leapfrog in order to qualify for the opening day roster, and


12. Benge having a .583 OPS in 103 AAA plate appearances.

 

That said, if and when Benge does plunge his way into this lineup, things would indeed be a little more sensible, with a career outfielder in left, Polanco punched back into the infield, even at the unfamiliar position of first, and Baty DHing against the righthanded Paul Skenes.

So having O.D. be a network game rather than SNY/G, K & R certainly suxx ... but it doesn't look like a game that'll be blacked out to anyone.

The acquisition of Freddy Peralta not only gives us a chance at an opening day with a real marquee matchup — the National League Cy Young winner vs. the league's win leader — it also totally flips the Pirates' lineup over as the Mets exchange a lefty for a righty. The Bucs get more Oneill Cruz-y and decidely lower the Jhostynxon factor in center. Lefty-mashing Joey Bart falls to the very back of the lineup where he has to earn his keep as a catcher, rather than a cleanup-hitting DH.

The Mets lineup still is in a fluid state after the first four guys. We have seen Marcus Semien projected as high as fifth and as low as ninth. Fangraphs remains bullish on the notion that Carson Benge opens the season in left, but I think we need to continue to work within the Baty-as-outfielder thesis for the time being.

That may well change as camp reveals new things about these utterly new Mets.

Freddy Peralta looks like he comes to party.

Exciting updates!

Well some more exciting than others.

1. Carlos Mendoza's behavior early this spring has suggested he is positioning Marcus Semien as his opening day leadoff hitter (unless Francisco Lindor makes an unexpectedly rapid recovery from surgery). This is, as has been noted above, sub-ideal considering Semien's OBP is not a stat he puts at the top of his resume, but one might guess that Mendoza sees this as least disruptive to the rest of the lineup.

The manager's second-most frequent leadoff choice this spring has been, interestingly enough, Carson Benge. I am tempted to conclude that this is not an alternative plan, but just a way to maximize Benge's plate appearances.

Lastly, Luis Robert, Jr. is thus far an unfired weapon. He might be enter the mix for leadoff later this spring.

2. Ronny Mauricio has gotten three of the six starts at shortstop thus far. Two have gone to Vidal Brujan, and the last to Grae Kessinger. Mauricio is not only seeing the lion's share of the time there, but also has started on each of the three days that have featured projected starter Marcus Semien at second, we have to conclude that Mauricio is indeed targeted as the opening day shortstop.

3. The Pirates, like the Mets, seem be tipping their hand with regard to moving a middle-of-the-order hitter up to the leadoff spot. In this case, Oneil Cruz — who started this thread not being in the projected lineup at all. So good for him! And good for Freddy Peralta who now has a big strike zone to aim for with his first hitter as a Met.

4. Also like the Mets, the Buccos seem to be swapping their leftfielder and rightfielder. All the cool kids are doin' it!

Interesting indeed.  We often drive in directly through and right past the Paramus mall that is an option for that shuttle.  $22 for a family of four would be half the cost of the Citi Field parking.
