It'd be a mental block for me, anyhow. $100 million looks pretty great unless you have a strong memory of having left $200 million on the table.

I'm here too. I think this is the most likely result. I think it's possible that someone may enter the picture on a short term deal, but I think only the Mets would extend to that fourth year (and option years) and that will ultimately be the difference. Also, I think Pete would prefer to come back if everything else was equal.

I'm not there. This is no other team that's been definitely in on Alonso, and I don't think Stearns will bid against himself. This is basically Stearns against Boras. Pete wants to be a Met and can sign anytime he wants. Boras is pushing for something he won't get, at least not from the Mets. If another mystery team enters the picture this could all change, but that hasn't happened yet. I'm sure Boras is trying to feed the Rosenthals and the Hey, man's of the world rumors that the Red Sox or Giants or Mariners are interested in Pete, but it doesn't seem to be happening.

I'm guessing he signs, but it'll be more like 3/$100 with an opt-out somewhere. Spring training is a little more than 5 weeks away and I'm betting the Polar Bear is getting a little antsy (as are most of us).

The key will be whether another team enters the mix. If no team ever shows interest, then Pete has one and only option. If another team comes in with a 3 year offer, then I think BG's contract is more likely. I would think there would be some team interested in a 40+ HR bat on a 3 year deal, but what do I know.

As has been said, teams may be reluctant to bid on Pete with the thought that Uncle Steve will come in and match or exceed whatever they offer. Kind of a Catch-22 from Pete's perspective.

Which was exacerbated by Pete publicly stating how much he'd love to be back. Basically he told other teams they'd be used as negotiating pawns.

I tend to think it's fine to be used as a negotiating pawn, if you don't take it personally, like it's a romantic slight or something.

If I'm the Phillies GM, and I like Pete Alonso and I think Pete Alonso is worth four years @ $30 million per annum, but I think he really wants to go back to the Mets, I'm going to bid my 4x30 to make sure the Mets have to endure as much pain as possible to outbid me.

If my suspicion is off and he accepts, great. I got my man at the price I thought he was worth. If he goes to them, my offer goes right back in my pocket. They are out that much more money and it didn't cost me a cent. Pete's using me? No, I'm using him!

If the Mets ever reach that point, they won't say so in the way you describe. They'll just sign a different player as an alternative solution and that's how Alonso's camp will get the message.

WFAN is reporting an "exclusive" (I didn't catch the name of the reporter) That Pete has agreed to accept a three year contract with the Mets, finances not disclosed/ still being worked out.

The lack of more details makes me suspicious, but ...

I have no idea if Jim Duquette has any credibility on stuff like this. I don't remember him having any inside knowledge, but I also don't remember him being wrong about stuff like this.

If it's true, I'm guessing it's just a matter of time until a deal is hammered out.

Of course, the financial portion of the deal is unknown at this point, but this would be good for both sides, similar to how Cody Bellinger’s contract with the Cubs was finalized in late February of 2024. There’s no need to wait that long with Pete

 

Did Bellinger's deal include an opt-out? If so, he apparently didn't exercise it, since the Yankees acquired him in a trade and not as a free agent.
