It seems to be a question of confidence and sequences.  And confidence in the sequences.

With a multi run lead Kodai needs to feature the fastball until someone proves they can hit it.

Yeah, we need to talk to Andy Green about this.

He brings Pache in for Baty (not as a pinch runner; just a straight defensive replacement) in the 6th but then hits Robert for Pache in the 8th.

By doing the switch for the top of the 6th, It is guaranteed that Pache’s spot will come up to bat again.  And we know that Pache can’t hit.  (So does Andy…that’s why Robert was used).

So what’s the thinking here?  Robert is too fragile to play 4 innings in the field on his off day?  Baty’s too much of a liability in the field to play more than 5 innings?  Pache has a games played incentive in his contract and Andy’s trying to do him a solid?  I really can’t see the logic.

He's entered Pache for defense and then lifted him when his turn came around at the plate three times now (I think), so I imagine he has thought it through.

The upside is it gets multiple innings of Pache's defense late-ish in the game.   I assume he sees Pache as, say, a 9.5 out there, while Robert is more of a 7.8.

The downside is it uses two guys to replace one.

Washington unfortunately tops Texas (who used to be Washington), 6-0.

They remain three games behind the fourth-/12th-place Nats.  The two other teams within striking distance — Pittsburgh and Cincy — each pulled out one-run wins as well.

All are playing AL teams, so their wins didn't even help take some competition down a peg.
