I noticed that the infielder( Mathis) the Mets got in the david Peterson deal is rated just below the top 10 ( 11 or 12) in the Mets system by one  publication ( Mets online? ) . It was yesterday and I can’t find the link.

On the prospect list generated by MLB.com Cole Mathis is ranked 14th in the Mets organization 

It seems like the future direction of Cole Mathis, pitcher or infielder, is yet to be established 

He had 11 Cape Cod League homers in 38 games before he got drafted

He was a 2nd round pick, 54th overall in 2024

I'm surprised the Cubs didn't want to see him out

And, besides, that isn't my point. The point is that if the Mets are going to be dealing away any of their under-performing pieces and/or FAs-to-be then it's not going to land them the 2026 equivalent of Steve Henderson: a 24 y/o dominating AAA but yet to have ML experience on account of being stuck behind two in-their-prime corner OFs [Griff Sr. and MVP to-be G. Foster].

I know he might be one of their best trading chips, but I will be very upset if they move Lindor.

Mrs Lefty says, "if they trade Lindor, I'm out".  She's not happy about all the rumblings.

With the material they have to trade, I don't see how they get anything decent or helpful back.  You'd be selling low on virtually everybody.

I doubt Lindor gets dealt. I think the story, broken by SNY's (formerly Newsday's) Chelsea Janes, was the Mets planting a story that everyone shy of the young stars (Ewing, Benge, Scott) are available for talks was a Cohen/Stearns leak to say that if any team out there is willing to be aggressive they the Mets are willing to meet them half way. iow, It doesn't hurt to listen but that doesn't mean they're actively peddling him.

It didn't look like Sproat would be traded. The hype around McLean-Sproat--Tong was growing into almost Big 5 hype. But then he was just ... gone. So no one is safe with Stearns in charge. I could see them trading McLean. And all of them. Acuna was gonna be the future of the Mets, 'til he was traded. Gilbert the same. Etc etc. 

Anyway, Athletics traded RHP Aaron Civale to Chicago Cubs for RHP Aiden Moffett.

Kansas City Royals traded RF Rudy Martin Jr. to Baltimore Orioles for cash.

The Clay Holmes situation is complex. It’s not just “is the prospect we get back better than the comp pick we’d get for the QO”. By offering the QO, the Mets dampen his market, ultimately making it more likely that we resign him. 
 

I think the proper question to ask is whether the prospect(s) you get back are worth forfeiting the competitive advantage you get to resign him. 
 

Take Michael King for example. I think the Mets potentially sign him last winter to a short term deal if not for the QO.

Great trade for the Nats. Mead is having a decent year after doing zilch for his 3 previous organizations and Early is a very good controllable arm

Mead was hit by a pitch in his second AB for the Red Sox and the result was a broken wrist.

Something here about the best laid plans of hominids and rodents, etc.

I'd also like to think that they'll make the right decisions, but that's another story.

I wonder if the fact that there are fewer sellers will cause these deals to happen right before the deadline.  A seller can just hold and wait for a higher offer.  With more sellers, a buyer can say "if you don't do this now, I'm going to get my LHRP elsewhere".  But if there's no elsewhere, there's no downside to holding.

Right.  Unless you have a reason think nobody will make a better offer between now and the deadline-- and we're not that close yet -- you sit.
