6. The Mets must get more than prospects in trades

President of baseball operations David Stearns and owner Steve Cohen have both been clear that the Mets intend to compete in 2027. If that’s the case, they cannot rely on free agency and their farm system alone to build a contender. They have to acquire pieces that will help them immediately, either in the form of Major League pitching or prospects who are already in Triple-A. It’s their clearest path toward avoiding a longer period of non-competitiveness.

That's pretty much what I was saying a week or so ago when I said I wanted a Steve Henderson. Of course, this time the Mets don't have a Tom Seaver to trade, but they also wouldn't be getting back three other players.

Those type of players are out there. Tampa Bay and several other teams make a living out of them

Brett Baty could be some other team's Steve Henderson, it's possible

Don't blow it Stearns

Okay, Minter has been traded. Here's what I'm curious about, in rough order:

Will they trade Holmes, and if so, what will they get?

Who will they get for Peralta?

Who will they get for Taylor?

Will they trade Robert, and for whom?

What will they get for Raley?

Will they trade Weaver or Brazoban?

Will they trade Baty, Vientos, or Alvarez? (I'm guessing no.)

Will anyone other than the above be dealt? (Semien, Lindor, Manaea, Senga? Of these, I think Manaea is most likely.)

My wife(who isn't a big sports fan) watches the news. And when she sees the Mets got a player, she'll ask, "Is he  good?".

I like to be able to say "He's better than what we have".

That's all I'm looking for in any deal. And looking at some of Stearns' acquisitions,  I'm not sure that will happen.

Baltimore Orioles traded RHP Dean Kremer to Minnesota Twins for OF Jhomnardo Reyes.

Detroit Tigers traded C Jake Rogers to Baltimore Orioles for RHP Zane Barnhart.

The Brewers traded outfielder Blake Perkins and right-hander Craig Yoho to the Guardians for catcher Bo Naylor and right-hander Codi Heuer, then optioned both newcomers to Triple-A.

At last year's trading deadline the Yanx dealt away four minor leaguers to the Giants for reliever Camilo Doval. But after Doval's contributions turned out to be not quite what the Bombers expected, today they spun him off to the Pirates for two prospects despite Doval not being eligible for FA-gency until after the 2027 season.

In 66 appearances for NYY over the '25 & '26 seasons Doval pitched to a 4.63 / 1.47 [ERA/WHIP] (vs 3.29 / 1.26 w/SFG in parts of five seasons) and just two saves.

From Fangraphs, it's the #22 and #57 prospects overall, plus the #16 prospect in their system.  It's not unreasonable for the league's best pitcher.

At some point, blaming the Dodgers for actually wanting to win has to stop.

Tigers got Zyhir Hope River Ryan and Brady Smith

Zyhir Hope is the biggee. River Ryan has debuted and is 27 and Brady Smith I don't know much about

The Red Sox, Brewers, Rays, and Phillies could have beaten that offer.  The Mets, assuming things went well enough for them to be buyers, would have needed to part with one of Benge and Ewing, plus one of McLean or Scott, plus maybe Tong.  Our best prospects at the beginning of the season have either graduated or disappointed.

River Ryan is an odd choice in that he turns 28 in a few weeks and has appeared in just 8 games over the past two years. Made his ML debut in August of 24 but then missed the rest of that season and all of '25 after pitching just four times so I'mmassuming TJS. Has thrown 8 mostly mediocre games this year at AAA Okkky City but folks must see potential in him now that the surgery & rehab is behind him. Because he was on the LAD roster when he got hurt he got ML service time for all of '25 so the Tigers will assume five years of control rather than six.

Zyhir Hope (I thought River and Zyhir were Joaquin Phoenix's brothers but there's much I'm confused about these days) is a 21 y/o L/L OF w/power currently putting up a 900 OPS while living on Tulsa Time in the AA Texas League. The Tigers may use him for a playoff push this year and is probably a decent bet to be in Detroit's OF full time by some point in '27

I don't "blame" the Dodgers at all. They're doing *exactly* what I wish Cohen and Stearns would do: spend money and resources on top-tier players.

But they don't. They try to catch lightning in a bottle out of retreads and maybes.

I don't know how you spend eleventy billion dollars on Soto and Lindor, both likely easy HOFers, and then surround them with question marks. I'll never get it.

This is going to be one of those fucking stupid circular arguments that chased all of us away the first time. Not every post is an attack that needs to be parsed to death.

smg suggested four posts before mine that people "stop blaming the Dodgers for trying to win." I think there are some in the baseballverse who think the Dodgers bulking up they way the are ruins baseball, the same way some felt about the MFYs twenty years ago. That doesn't mean anyone here specifically does or doesn't. He's just acknowledging the existence of that point of contention, and I was simply following off that point.

Here's the other big one from overnight: Luis Castillo from the Mariners to the White Sox for three players.

Castillo is older 33 and has $24M guaranteed for 2027 and a vesting option for 2028 with 180 innings and good health. This season, much like Peralta's, has been his worst year, with an ERA over 5.

The return was Nolan Jones, who's 27 and hasn't lived up to the promise of his 2024 rookie season in Colorado but is probably a fourth outfielder type, Boston Smith, a catching prospect with a .450 OBP in his first pro season, and 31yo Seranthony Dominguez, who offsets some of the salary and is a serviceable bullpen piece.

This feels like the kind of package Peralta will bring.

I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to be fucking or stupid or circular or chase anybody away or parse anything to death.

I didn't even mean to argue.  I just wanted to know what I missed.

Kansas City Royals traded CF Lane Thomas and LHP Bailey Falter to Atlanta Braves for LHP Carter Holton and RHP Lucas Braun.

Boston Red Sox traded LHP Jojo Ingrassia to Detroit Tigers.

Because that's the Stearn way. Cohen seems to agree with him which makes it even worst. Hope I'm wrong but not expecting much change. I'm now as worried about our owner as I am our POB.

Resource wise Steve Cohen brings as much to the table as anyone including the Dodgers

It does feel like what the Dodgers obtain turns into gold and what the Mets get turns to poo figuratively

I consider Cohen responsible for getting Soto and am trying to remember any great Mets acquisition successes primarily orchestrated by Stearns

If owner/Stearns really want to compete next year they would have extended Clay and kept Weaver at least. Of course they will say we're going to compete. Got to sell them season tickets Ya know.

Stearns has as large a budget to work with as any GM/POBO in MLB., Other than signing Soto, he seems to act like he is still on a small market budget.  He seems to be constantly looking for lower cost reclamation projects, rather than proven stars.  I understand responsible spending, but by constantly chasing the "deals" they end up missing out on the top tier talents (or let current Mets talent walk).

I for my part certainly wasn't specifying anybody here.  My main point was that there are several contending teams that have the farm system to beat the Dodgers' offer, and chose not to.  Anybody who is angry over that should not blame the Dodgers.  Also, the fact the the Dodgers have that deep of a farm system despite always being buyers this time of year suggests that they are doing more things right than throwing money at the problem.  And, as every Mets fan can agree at this point, it takes more than money to build a steady contender.
