Righthanders Frankie Montas and Dylan Cease look pretty evenly matched at a superficial level, but anything can happens once the cleats hit the turf of Petco Park — home of the Bartolo homerun, the Wright barehander, and the Beltran/Cameron collision.

The Mets have matched their season high of seven wins in a row. They remain a game and a half ahead of Philadelphia for the lead in the National League East, as well as five games ahead of the Pads in the overall standings.

The Padres have won two in a row themselves, but are only 5-5 over the last 10. Manny Machado, still going strong at 32, has been their best hitter this season and recently passed 2,000 knocks on his career. Their lineup — which in recent seasons has broadly featured guys who used to play shortstop — currently regularly deploys Fernando Tatis, Jr. in right field since the release of Jason Heyward near the end of June sent shockwaves through the league as players were stunned to find Heyward had still been playing.

I confess that had fallen into the Ray Knight trap, lamenting the team not resigning José Iglesias, wondering if they lost a big piece of the spirit that animated their run in 2024. That may actually be true, but the .234 / .294 / .271 // .565 line Iglesias has put up in 2025 (with no homers and 24 RBI) suggests that letting him take plate appearances from the team's young infielders would have been a steep price to may for whatever José's followup single was going to be.

Had he been a 2025 Mets, he likely would have been traded by now, possibly to the Padres.

Anyhow, tune in tonight at 9:40, and make sure you're wearing all your Frankie Montas stuff.

Same lineup as yesternight except for Vientos in place of Marte.

Todd Zeile in place of Keith Hernandez in the broadcast lineup.

Nice 1st to 3rd by McNeil.

I wasn't so sure that was a good idea as it was unfolding

oe: and it quickly pays dividends.

I didn't think Jeff McNurkles had any business going first to third on that hit, but Merrill made a weak throw and it was cut off. He went to the scouting meeting and I didn't, and now they get the early lead on a sacrifice fly thanks to his baserunning.

Yeah, even his takes are getting impressive.

Even when he hasn't been going good this year, the inside slider, which had been destroying him for much of the last two seasons, hasn't been getting him, and pitchers are not longer using it so liberally against him.

Umpie is giving Cease these curves four inches off the plate.

His fastball looks great, but if they're giving you the pitch, they're giving it.

XANDER BOGAERTS: "Was that cool of you to take second when he had a man down with head trauma?"

FRANCISCO LINDOR: "I mean, it wasn't the coolest thing I've ever done or anything, but you've got to run out the play."

XANDER BOGAERTS: "I don't know, man."
