Using Diaz for 2 innings. I guess they're not going to use him tomorrow, so he can pitch in the ASG.

So I can officially recommend de-Gelbing your broadcast and listening to Springsteen with the game volume down.

Crazy thing is, I started disc 1 in like the 2nd or 3rd inning, and it's still playing now, just started the Mexican album.

Gelbs is just.....not good. You get used to the cadence of Gary Cohen and Gelbs just messes things up. He goes a few pitches without mentioning the count, and Gary always gives the count even if he or Keith or Ron are in the middle of a story (I'm betting that's his radio training). There's more but that one really annoys me.

Gelbs better not be the replacement when Gary finally hangs up his microphone, although it certainly seems like he's being groomed in that direction.

They really should rotate people through the seat when Cohen is unavailable.

Gelbs had the last Cohen-free series? Good. Let Eamon McAneny or Gary Apple or Michelle Margaux or Connor Rogers take a turn. That way, they all get a fair look, and they all get a few big calls to put on their sizzle reel.

I feel the same way when the analysts are out. Let other pitchers (Blevins, Nelson Figueroa ... ) sit in when Darling is out, and other retired batsmen (Cliff Floyd, Murph, Brian McRae, Zeile ... ) for when Keith is out.

It kind of isn't fair to Blevins and Zeile that the only time they do get a chance in the announcer's booth, there are two absent guys that they are filling in for. Hard to prosper in that environment.

Just don't get tied into the idea that the replacement p-b-p voice HAS to come from someone already in house.

I mean it's great that Gary and Howie have NYM pedigree going back to their childhoods but that shouldn't be seen as a prerequisite.

Raad and McCarthy seem to be doing fine on the radio side even without NYM pj's in their past.

Yeah, I kind of drew from there with that list, but only because I imagine SNY works that way. Raad and McCarthy would indeed both be preferable to any of the in-house non-Cohen options, but it has been ages since anybody floated from radio to TV (certainly since the establishment of SNY), so I figured that is how they would work. I guess that the two different outlets don't share well.

But yes, put them (and Rose, of course, as available) at the top of any substitute list.

Was listening to the radio last week and Raad was paired with Anthony Recker, who wasn't bad except that maybe he talked too much. (Perhaps not a handicap on a radio broadcast, I guess.) With a little work he might improve. He's popped up on MLB Network broadcasts as well, so somebody likes him.

Meanwhile, back to actual baseball: with 1st place in NL East on the line (Phils w/one fewer loss than Mets) the Phils are leading 4-3 in bottom 6th in SD

Wheeler v Darvish was the matchup although Darvish is gone by this point. A PHI loss would put us in a dead tie heading into the game preceding the ASB.

Not too bad for a team that's now exactly .500 since the beginning of June and looks to be getting healthier in the pitching department.

Phillies also .500 since June 1 coming into tonight's SNB game

I have a well-established jones for Recker, but he drove me crazy on the radio. Analyzed every tiny thing, single-minded and certain, and drove his points home with a sledgehammer.

Padres win 5-4 and take the series 2-1. Mets & Phils tied going into the final game prior to the ASG

Lots have gone wrong this season but, let's face it, most of us would have signed up for this at the beginning of the year.

I listened to the majority of this on XM with Raad + Recker while floating in my pool drinking hard seltzer. Tough life.

(Recker stinks.)

I've got the Mets in sole possession of first place in their division by a half a game heading into the last game before the all-star break.

Mets 55-41

Phils 54-41

Even better.
