Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 Stanek back on a one year deal. Was good for us in the post-season, but regular season Stanek wasn't great. 6.06 ERA. 1.286 WHIP. Was just ok overal in 2024 and 2023. Would be nice if we could tap into 2022 Stanek though.Because he's a middle reliever, he can either be DFA'd by May or be closing games for us in September.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 I really liked the way he came to life in the postseason. That was some fun shit
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 I agree. By October I had a lot of faith in him.https://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2024/20241002_NYP_02.jpg>
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 If nothing else, it keeps a place on the back pages warm for a biggie signing.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 =Fman99 post_id=169406 time=1725931984 user_id=86]Ryan Stanek, in between meth deals, mowing down opponents
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 SNY predicting that as of today the 2025 bullpen would include Diaz, Minter, Stanek, Reed Garrett, Dedniel Nunez, Jose Butto, Sean Reid Foley and Huascar Brazoban.Assuming that Huascar is only ever used as a mop guy, I think it's a pretty decent looking starting point. I think also that they are still kicking the tires on some higher tier guys not yet signed to deals.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 Not to take that as Gospel, but that's eight bullpen guys, along with six starters. It excludes Danny Young, who is out of options, and Dedniel Nuñez, who was their best reliever for an important stretch last season, among other guys. And considering such a roster would leave the team with only a three-player bench, it pinches out unoptionable guys on the offensive side of the ball too.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 When I first saw this I thought maybe we had signed Ryne Sandberg, who was good and all but he's kind of old (how old? he's MY age old, that's how old)So this is a much better signing IMO.Q: Ryne Sandberg was named for former 10-year MLB RHP Ryne Duren. So was Stanek, born in 1991 (in StL) and still in the midst of Sandberg's eventual HoF career, named for Sandberg?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 This sounds like Mickey Cochrane, Mickey Mantle, Mickey Callaway.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 Stanek was indeed named for Sandberg.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 So this is 71 years of serial MLers named Ryne, covering 1954 - 1965; 1981 - 1997; and 2017 - 2025
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 There is definitely going to be a roster crunch. I would argue that the first victim was Mike Vasil, whom the Rays took in the Rule V Draft. But payroll will be eaten somewhere. Not necessarily in large amounts, especially given Cohen's wallet, but somebody with a major-league deal is not coming to Queens in late March.I think a six-man rotation is insanity, especially given the sellers' market for starting pitchers. Pay them more, use them less? Not a good business model, especially if one of the infield corners winds up being manned by somebody who belongs in AAA.I also don't think the Mets can afford a four-player bench, especially if there is a platoon at DH (as seems likely). That being said, the Stanek deal is low-risk and can work out nicely if he pitches close to his playoff form for the whole season.

So was Stanek, born in 1991 (in StL) and still in the midst of Sandberg's eventual HoF career, named for Sandberg? When Shortcenter (real name Ryan) was a freshman, his coach nicknamed him "Ryno". Presumably after Ryne Sandberg. SC first made the team as a second baseman before moving to third later. It's one of those baseball names that I figured everyone knew. One day we saw Ryne Sandberg on TV and only then did I realize that my son had no idea who he was. He thought his coach was calling him "rhino" the whole time. So he went and checked the lineup card. It was spelled Ryno.

If he gets returned by the Rays, does he have to be added to the Mets 40 man roster?Yes. Or at least he has to be exposed to waivers before being sent down.If he doesn't , can he be sent to the minors without going through waivers?Answered above. He was available through Rule 5* because he couldn't be sent down without clearing waivers.Changing teams doesn't change that. Otherwise teams would swap players back and forth as if an MLB version of money laundering.* btw, it's Rule 5, not Rule V

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 Mets Roster Central is certainly operating from the perspective that the 13-pitcher limit is in place.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2025 Posted January 29, 2025 Ryne Stanek steps off the Breaking Bad set and back onto the Mets rosterHappy with this

The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 I like this addition. I really like his combination of high 4 seamer and the splitter. I'm not as crazy about his slider. Overall, he should be a nice addition to the bullpen.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 Plus, he and Winker keep the team's hair game in solid contention.
