Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 I've seen several rumors floating around about the Mets making a blockbuster trade for the White Sox pitcher. He's two years away from free agency. Every speculated trade I've seen includes Brett Baty, and acknowledges that other players would certainly have to be included. (Acuna and Mauricio have been mentioned.)
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 Totally burst onto the radar this year, his first as a starter.L/L (not that the second L matters anymore) 6' 6"/ 245Former #11 overall draft pick out of U of Tennessee in the abbreviated (five rounds) 2020 draft Went directly to the majors and made his first appearance in Sept of '20Only made 12 minor league appearances and not until 2023Will turn 26 in mid-season '25 / three years of club control, thru '27Missed all of '22 with some kind of injuryMade a full season's worth of starts (32) in '24 although only 146 innings so just 4.5 IP/start (which is probably smart given the missed time)3.58 ERA; 1.07 WHIP; 12.9 K/9 vs 2.0 BB/9 (yes, that's 2 BB/per 9, not per inning like we're used to)And I think I heard him say that he's going to play for free for whichever team gets him off the White SoxBut, yeah, you're gonna have to give up to get.Place your pun about knitting together a deal here:
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 Well, it seems to me that the report is just a yarn.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2024 Posted November 11, 2024 He's only had one good year. And was basically a 5 inning pitcher. Also said he wouldn't pitch the post season unless he got an extension. Also. His leg kick is all sorts of weird.

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2024 Posted November 11, 2024 I would think so. I went back and checked the article to make sure.https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40640468/white-sox-pitcher-garrett-crochet-wants-start-get-extension-tradedhttps://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40640468/white-sox-pitcher-garrett-crochet-wants-start-get-extension-tradedThere are no direct quotes from Crochet, but it doesn't really look like it was refuted. He does cite health concerns for the demand, so maybe it wasn't completely selfish. But a guy saying "I can't pitch in the post-season or out of the pen or else I'll get hurt" isn't a great sign either. And like I said. He's had one good season and a history of injuries. Maybe the smart people will decide he's worth the risk. If it was me, I wouldn't give up my top prospects go get him.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2024 Posted November 11, 2024 The old reserve player's plea, who knows he'll will be exposed by playing regularly," Bench me or trade me".Later

Plus, Baty, who has a .900 OPS in AAA. This trade would involve trading Williams, Mauricio and Baez off of injured seasons (value low) and Baty, who's value is low after starting slow in the bigs. Trading these four young players at the valley of their value sounds a lot like something Mets GMs of the past would have done.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2024 Author Posted November 14, 2024 Well, it was suggested by a GM of the past!I expect that the Mets are at a point now where they'd be willing to dip into their prospect pool for the right deal. I'm not sure that this is the one to do that for.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2024 Posted November 14, 2024 I feel like it would suck not seeing Ronny in the big leagues with the Mets , it's a pass for me

smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2024 Posted November 14, 2024 He's yet to present any evidence that he can handle a full season of work, and his 5.12 ERA and .823 OPS against after the ASB should not instill any confidence. Somebody is going to severely overpay for this guy, and I really hope that somebody isn't us.

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2024 Posted November 17, 2024 Pass. This has the makings of a classic overpay.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2024 Posted November 17, 2024 (edited) I saw him pitch in that third game against the White Sox and I think he struck out the first seven Mets he faced. His point about the postseason was that he already far beyond his innings pitched, and he didn't want to get traded to a team that would abuse him for two-and-half months and not be invested in his future. If we have some surplus talent and can land him without shipping out our top prospects, I'd do it. Maybe a package around Baty, McNeil, (with the Mets picking up a chunk of salary) and one of the next tier prospects. The Sox need warm bodies who don't completely suck. batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 Ken Rosenthal, for The Athletic, reports that the Mets are the most aggressive suitors for Garret Crochet.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2024 Author Posted December 10, 2024 I wonder what it will take to get him. They're likely going to have to dip into their prospect pool, which they've been reluctant to do. I suspect some of them are considered untouchable while others aren't, but we really don't know who falls into which category. The White Sox would likely be interested in Gilbert or Acuna or Williams. I don't know if Baty would tempt them.
Bob Alpacadaca Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 From SNY. We do seem to have a surplus of middle infielders:While no deal is considered close at this time, Rosenthal notes that the Mets would appear to have the edge in the sweepstakes due to the surplus of young talent they could offer, and the White Sox looking for big-league-ready hitters in exchange. With Chicago's farm system lacking up-the-middle talent, youngsters such as Luisangel Acuna, Jett Williams, Drew Gilbert, Brett Baty, and Ronny Mauricio could potentially be of interest.Crochet certainly would cost the Mets a pretty penny in any deal, but adding a young and controllable talent -- under team control for the next two seasons -- would certainly be an excellent way for David Stearns to round out a starting rotation that's still missing the top-of-the-line arm needed.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 Jett, Acuna, Mauricio and Baty are all infielders. Jett, Acuna and Gilbert are smaller, tablesetting types of hitters. I guess it makes sense that we can't keep all of them.I don't know. I've said what I've said about Crochet, and I'm bad at judging trades objectively anyway.I wish we'd just sign good pitchers and let the kids play.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 (edited) When I first saw the trade proposal, it also involved the Mets getting the Soz' centerfielder Luis Robert Jr. (with the Mets throwing in an outfield prospect)THAT I would do. He fills the bill for an every day centerfielder with a medium BA and good power. (I'm thinking Tommie Agee.)He had a down year last year , but was an All-Star two years ago when he hit 38 HR.For a bunch of players who might not even make the team? Worth investigating.Later Edited December 10, 2024 by Guest
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 Jett and Acuña are also outfielders as well. I figure it's a regular conversation in the Mets' front office which one they should be pushing toward the outfield and which one they should be pushing toward the infield. Center is the spot that's opening up most immediately, but second won't be far behind, and after the way this last year went, Acuña is something like a full season ahead of Williams right now. He may end up in the outfield simply because that will be the open spot as he establishes himself.Mauricio may well gravitate thirdward as well.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2024 Author Posted December 10, 2024 I'm tempted to say which prospects I'd most hate to part with, but I don't really know. I guess I'd be most sorry to see Tong or Williams go, followed by Maurico, but I'm not going to pretend that this is based on anything concrete. I was much more excited about Gilbert a year ago than I am now, but that could change again in the next twelve months.Get back to me in ten years and I'll tell you which ones should have been kept and which ones should have been dealt.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 You sound like me.Victor Diaz, Dilson Herrera and Gavin Cecchini were a couple of guys I knew were going to be stars. Which is why I can't even pretend to know who should be dealt. I'm sure I would have had no objection to trading Vientos before this season.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 As Fran Healy was fond of saying you can go from prospect to suspect quickly, and I agree with you guys, I don't know much of anything about our prospect group, most anything I do know is from here , having said that I would love to see Ronny get back healthy and see what he's got
