1:10 opener on SNY. Win and in. Lose and last for the nightcap.

It'll take a Megillage in the first game, per Martino. That Schwellenbach character pitches for them. We should have him figured out by now…right?

I don't really love the idea of hinging our entire season on a Wilson Phillips song, but there you go (I'd have gone with "Hold On" from Yes' 90125 album were it on me).

I am cahnfident about our chances to win a baseball game today.

I know this pain (I know this pain)

Why do you lock yourself up in these chains? (these chains)

No one can change your life except for you

Don't ever let anyone step all over you

Just open your heart and your mind (mmm)

Is it really fair to feel, this way inside? (woah)

Wow the lyrics are spot on, I am picturing Momma Megill singing this to Tylor this morning

Wearing my lucky Mr. Met socks and a baseball tie to work today.

OK, assuming Megill goes in game one. If we win that, we rest Severino for the playoffs and throw someone like Ottavino to start a bullpen game for the second game? Assuming the Braves will do the same with Sale if they win the opener.

It looks like Megill in game one to potentially save Severino for playoffs game one. I get that

However I would want all my best horses in game one

Mendoza's Megill pick for game one.almost feels like a plan to fail

Then again, are the Mets even going to touch Schwellenbach?

Tough calls all around

Just win baby!

The Mets win game 1, they can call up someone new to start game 2. They can option someone who might not be on the postseason roster anyway (Brazoban? Danny Young?) to clear a spot. A 40-man spot is not a problem since Christian Scott hasn't been transferred to the 60-day DL yet.

I understand that Eddie Alvarez is not postseason eligible…but the Mets probably want him around in game 2 to play infield.

Also, don't the September rules specify that of the two extra guys, one has to be a position player and the other a pitcher? If so, I don't think they'd be able to replace Alvarez with a pitcher.

Good call. Technically, it's only a limit on pitchers, but practically speaking, it's correct that the Mets can't replace Alvarez with a pitcher since that would put them over the roster limit of 14.

Do you think Winkie is hurting or is Taylor just so much hotter relative to him?

Or is defense the edge that gets Taylor the start even against the righty? Because Winker sure ain't starting against Sale.

Not at all. Winker's bat has been undoubtedly cold. Mendoza has always tried to get opportunities for cold bats to find their way back, but games of existential import are hardly the time for that.

Rough to miss the whole doubleheader, but tough choices have to be made.

But he sure seemed to be getting down the line awkwardly the last time I saw him going to first, so I was wondering if the stiff-back bug bit him or something.

You don't think if the Mets win game 1, Winker doesn't get to start game 2?

That makes a sort of ironic sense.

If the Mets lose Game One, they probably don't see Sale in Game Two, and a good chance they therefore see a righthanded alternative, so there's a role for Winker.

If the Mets win Game One, they definitely do see Sale in Game Two, but their priority won't be getting the best matchups, but getting the most frequently used guys out of the lineup, and getting some swings for the rusty guys, so there's a role for Winker.

That's some good chess thinking right there.

One additional thought that just occurred to me: I wonder if Megill gets optioned to Syracuse after game 1, win or lose. He wouldn't be on the WC round roster anyway.

Posted

It's certainly a good thought. The Mets probably have five AAA players in Atlanta ready to be activated based on all the options.

Posted

It might be as simple as Winker is sore as Mendoza has been pretty good at slotting slumping players

I wouldn't mind seeing Drew Gilbert in game 2 just to get a look if nothing else

DiComo reported that the Mets indeed have extra players in Atlanta but that Mendoza decline to identify who.

Cagey!

Are they signed in under assumed names? Are they working out in disguises?
