A friend of mine refers to Mets ho sign with archrivals as dirty traitors. Can't go against that tonight, but will otherwise remember a state of the art utility guy when he was at his handiest.

Now that he's a Brave…yeech.

The Braves and Phillies are real assholes.

Gizmo had about the best of hands I can remember on the Mets. He tended at times to disappear offensively and sometimes it looked as though it was because he was too fat.

Still not surprising that a good team picked him up while we went after Diego Whatshisname from Reno.

The glove , the beard , the juggling, solid bench player , seems to me we have picked up worse ones while letting him walk

Him going to the Braves has the potential to be the worst. Akin to losing Oquendo to the Cardinals. A self-own.

His hands were almost too fazzt. They worked faster than his feet.

I have no doubt that his hand-eye coordination could have make him a decent-enough hitter if coached right. It still might. But that Sam Gamgee body is a challenge.

Specific memories include the long homer to center in spring training, the bat catch in spring training, and a huge 2019 game-tying homer he hit against the Braves in the middle of an August tear. I was visiting a bar operated by a sportswriter friend of mine I knew online, and we turned the whole room into Mets fans that night.

Despite hitting lefthanded, Mets managers liked to use him against lefties.

Also, two of his five career homers came against Darren O'Day with the Braves. Totally a Met, in a way Aaron Altherr will never be.

It strikes me that he's our most defining loss of the offseason. Compared to losing deGrom a year ago, it's more manageable.

He should have never stopped wearing 77.

I was sitting about 20 rows behind the dugout so I had no idea what happened until it showed up on Twitter.

I remember his cool bat catch and his juggling ability. I also remember his very hirsute visage. He was an enjoyable presence in 2022, but outside of that, I always kind of felt he was just taking up space.

This highlight reel is far from complete, as it only features 2022 selections. Notable is that it's not his catching highlighted on most of these plays, but his throwing — and not so much his arm's power, but his blindingly quick release.

This video is too padded with goofy production stuff, but if you can get around that there's some good stuff. It's cool around 1:10 (if the video doesn't jump ahead) to see him practicing fielding with his right hand and throwing with his gloved left hand.

Worth noting Gary Cohen's professionalism in always remembering that "manos" is a feminine noun, despite its masculine suffix.

Also took the mound three times, throwing a perfect inning the first time, giving up two runs the second, and giving up a lone hit the third.

Very few of my memories of him involve actual game play. His glove was not as strong in 2023 as it had been in years' past. I think that was what led to his DFA
