smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 I have no problem with organizational depth. I'd have a huge problem with demoting Alvarez to make room for this guy.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Well, who is catching at Syracuse while Alvarez is in New York? Might be a sign that Francisco is staying put.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 He's better than all the minor league veteran catchers and the prospects except for Parada. And even if he doesn't catch, he still adds some power.I have no problem with the signing.Later
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 For nowAlvarez/Nido NextAlvarez/SanchezThenNarvaez/AlvarezBring up Mauricio please
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Mets sign career-spiraling .200-hitting slugger to show their other hitters what not to become.
RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 This is insurance.Nido is out of options. Once Navaez returns, there's a chance he'll be lost. His hitting is pathetic, but he's considered a good defender, so another team may snatch him up.They'll need someone at Syracuse who can be called up if Navaez or Alvarez gets hurt. Sanchez has caught in the majors (not well, but still), so he's worth keeping just in case. None of the other AAA catchers look like they can hit (they're not hitting in the minors).
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Michael Perez and Nick Meyer are sharing the catching duties at Syracuse, and both are currently on the Interstate.Meyer: .150/.277/.175 in 13 games.Perez: .167/.281/.278 in 18 games.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Sanchez is insurance more at RH DH than he is at catcher.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Frayed Knot wrote:Sanchez is insurance more at RH DH than he is at catcher.Maybe, but I would rather have him catching at AAA in case of emergency than not, so I like the move. Unless it means an eventually Alvarez demotion. If Sanchez were to start mashing, the Mets could carry 3 catchers with the idea that Alvarez or Sanchez is the regular DH while Narvaes catches . This comes down to whether they would rather lose Nido or Vogebach at that point
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 It's pretty bad, they should just put the folding lawn chair behind the plate like we used to do in the wiffle ball era
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 I'm not saying you wouldn't put Sanchez behind the plate. But he was never more than a hitter who could (sorta) catch and now you're not even sure he can hit.

He doesn't have to be better than anyone on the current roster, he has to be better than the next guy up if an injury occurs, and that seems possible
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 And if his offense contributions have grown more modest and dubious, it's hard to get any value out of them without him also wearing a catcher's mitt, and hopefully keeping some other duffer out of the lineup.

kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Robot umps have nothing on that beautiful lawn chair. Nothing.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2023 Author Posted May 13, 2023 Sanchez reportedly has opt-out clause if not called up by 5/19. Tearing it up at Syracuse.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 He will be called up any dayAhead of Vientos and Mauricio

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 I have my doubts about both prospects — Sanchez' promotion and Vientos' anger.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 If you're calling up Sánchez it's because you want/need a catcher which, considering neither guy we started the season with is available right now and the current backup is a career journeyman with a 600 OPS (vs Sachez's near 800) we kind of do. Pitting this as a Vientos vs Sánchez thing is pretty silly.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 They need all the help they can get and can execute more than one option
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 It was explicitly pitted as Sanchez vs. Vientos. We've got to try harder.
