Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Lotta lefties in the Pittsburgh lineup, and the bottom half of their lineup is mostly low-average, young reserves trying to get their feet wet.Mets move Alonso in the lineup for the first time in a while.

[TH][/TH][TH][FIMG=250]https://cdn.freebiesupply.com/images/large/2x/new-york-mets-logo-transparent.png[/FIMG][/TH][TH][/TH][TH][/TH][TH][FIMG=220]https://cdn.freebiesupply.com/images/large/2x/pittsburgh-pirates-logo-transparent.png[/FIMG][/TH][TH][/TH]

[TH]#[/TH][TH]Player[/TH][TH]Pos.[/TH][TH]#[/TH][TH]Player[/TH][TH]Pos.[/TH]

=#FF5910]1=#002D72]Brandon Nimmo (L)=#FF5910]cf=#FDB827]1=#27251F]Oneil Cruz (L)=#FDB827]ss

=#FF5910]2=#002D72]Pete Alonso (R)=#FF5910]1b=#FDB827]2=#27251F]Bryan Reynolds (S)=#FDB827]dh

=#FF5910]3=#002D72]Francisco Lindor (S)=#FF5910]ss=#FDB827]3=#27251F]Rodolfo Castro (S)=#FDB827]3b

=#FF5910]4=#002D72]Jeff McNeil (L)=#FF5910]2b=#FDB827]4=#27251F]Jack Suwinski (L)=#FDB827]cf

=#FF5910]5=#002D72]Daniel Vogelbach (L)=#FF5910]dh=#FDB827]5=#27251F]Cal Mitchell (L)=#FDB827]rf

=#FF5910]6=#002D72]Mark Cahna (R)=#FF5910]lf=#FDB827]6=#27251F]Michael Chavis (R)=#FDB827]1b

=#FF5910]7=#002D72]Tyler Naquin (L)=#FF5910]rf=#FDB827]7=#27251F]Tucupita Marcano (L)=#FDB827]2b

=#FF5910]8=#002D72]Eduardo Escobar (S)=#FF5910]3b=#FDB827]8=#27251F]Greg Allen (S)=#FDB827]lf

=#FF5910]9=#002D72]Tomás Nido (R)=#FF5910]c=#FDB827]9=#27251F]Tyler Heineman (S)=#FDB827]cf

[TH][/TH][TH]Pitcher[/TH][TH][/TH][TH][/TH][TH]Pitcher[/TH][TH][/TH]

=#FF5910]=#002D72]Chris Bassitt (R)=#FF5910]sp=#FDB827]=#27251F]Duane Underwood (R)=#FDB827]sp

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Author Posted September 7, 2022 Alonso batted second 70 times in 2019, 4 times in 2020 and 30 times last year. This is his first time in that spot this season. In 2022 so far, he's hit third 5 times and cleanup 130 times.
Chad ochoseis Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 I think there have been some analytics that say that the 2 hole is the best place to put your power hitter. There's some good rationale for that, particularly now that a position player is in the 9 spot. Plenty of likelihood that the 2 batter will come up with runners on base, and over the course of the season, the #2 spot will get more PAs than the #4 spot. Not that that was Buck's rationale.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Author Posted September 7, 2022 What an empty ballpark!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 I'm guessing that this is the rescheduled game? That and a day game in September for a back-end team can make for some scarce crowding. I should have driven out. Also, I wanted to send Escobar on Nido's double. A 30% chance of scoring, and perhaps less, would have made it worth a shot.On the other hand, the relay man on that play would have been that alien mutant Oneil Cruz, so maybe Cora knew what he was doing.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Escobar didn't have a .30% chance of scoringCruz was receiving the relay right about as Escobar was reaching 3rd and he was maybe 40 feet behind 3rd base.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 That's not the way I saw it. Rewinding NOW!!!!
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Escobar would have been out by 20 feet had he tried.Another lethargic day for the offense; at least Bassett looks to be on point.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 No real shots of the relay play and the runner in the same shot.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Here's one. He's a couple of steps into his braking and the ball's apparently in the air. You can make an educated guess as to where, but it's inconclusive. It's also not clear how many steps into braking Escobar is.[fimg=700]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2022/09/screen-shot-2022-09-07-at-1.23.49-pm.png[/fimg]It's certainly likely that he's out. I disagree that he's automatically out by 20 feet or that he had a 0.30% chance of scoring.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 NAQBOOM! About time somebody did something.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 ESCOBOOM! Back to back and belly to bellyu!!!!!
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 oh sure, get all the offense outta the way for degrom's start tonight. i see how it is.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 This is the way we roll.Cool to unload on the "starter" after touching up the "opener" first. It's like trying to get into the bullpen and realizing that, oh yeah, you've already gotten into the bullpen.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 So, in a nod to G & K's discussion about pitching roles, I guess the 'bulk' pitcher is the guy whose job it is to give up runs in bulk.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Cruz got the ball just as Esco was hitting 3rd. Now if he hadn't been braking he might have been two, maybe three strides past, meaning that the throw home would have reached the catcher with E.E. around the mid-point and not much more.It wasn't the smart call to hold him, it was the only call.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 It may well have been the smart call. I disagree that it was the only call. Also, PNC park tells me that Jesus forgave errors.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Gary drops a 'contretemps' on Keith, who seems completely oblivious to Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Bassitt looks determined to save the bullpen here. Kudos.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 I'll put it this way, it was the only call that would have kept me from blurring out: Joey, what the fuck were you thinking?!?Low pitch count (62) for Bassitt thru 5

Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 I'd be happier still if we could score runs via a series of sequential singles and doubles, instead of just taking 27 cracks at a dinger like they've been doing.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 MFS62 makes a cameo appearance.
