Anthony Rizzo threw a hissy fit in the dugout last night after striking out. But it wasn't the K he was mad about, it was two pitches earlier when the HP Ump refused to award him 1st base after a HBP. I happened to be watching at that point and it was ABSOLUTELY the right call. Not only did he fail to try to move away from the pitch, he clearly stuck his leg into a soft curve.

You want to do away with that stuff ... call it more often.

I've long thought that's a call not made often enough.

Angels take on the Mariners with an inning that would make Keith Hernandez cry.

Hot, sexy ex-Met action from Sam Haggerty and Paul Sewald. Tepid, awkward ex-Met action from Aaron Loup. Small-time Jomboy wannabe with the narration, but waddayagonnado?

Phils lose 1-0 to Cincy this afternoon.

That's the fourth time they've been shutout in their last seven games including two 1-0 blankings.

And the Jays have already won (over the O's) as they fly to NYC for a four game set starting Thursday while tracking the results of tonight's MFY/TBR tilt

Texas's problem was that they tried throwing around big bucks F.A. money this past winter despite coming in being nowhere near competitive.

Teams, especially smaller and middle market clubs, need to get decent before they go that route but the Rangers lost 102 last season so even

if things went great this season with Seager & Semien* did they really think it was going to be enough to lift them near Houston's level?

I guess the lure of that 3rd WC slot was too tempting to ignore. Texas sits 12 games under .500 and behind seven better WC contenders.

I seem to recall the Padres and ChiSox tried going from 0 to 60 via FA-gency about a half decade back and they flunked too.

* Seager is down a bit from his Dodger days but is still pretty good. Semien is 31 already with just two seasons of >100 OPS+ in his career (and this one ain't one of 'em)

Yanx, down 4-0, got some runs in innings 6, 7, 8 to tie it at 4

Rays get a two out bases loaded 2B in the 10th to take a 7-4 lead.

Eight pitches later the Yanx had won: single (1st & 3rd thx to the clown car rules), four pitch walk, walk-off Grand Slam (Josh Donaldson)

If you don't want to lose your last meal by listening to Jon Sterling's call of Donaldson's homer, here's the text.

"That was Josh, By Gosh.

And he did it with panache."

Jim Kaat, alongside Costas, is doing his final baseball broadcast on MLB.TV tonight (NYY v TOR)

They just put up a graphic of a game he once pitched against Randy Jones in May 1977

Final Score Padres 4 - Phillies 1

12 total hits, just 2 Ks, 3 BBs,

Time of Game: 1:20

The Rockies lost 13-0 today to the Cardinals (Pujols a GS, #690)

The odd thing is that it's the third time this season that the Rox have lost a game 13-0

That seems almost impossible.

Marcell Ozuna of the Braves (who didn't play this last series) was arrested for DUI last night.

Same guy who served a suspension last year for violating the domestic violence policy.

Ri-DICK-ulous overturned call just now in the Braves/Astros game.

Slide at 2nd by Harris of the Braves and he MIGHT have been safe but the call was out and the replay didn't come within an Alonso HR of being definitive.

They flipped it anyway.

... aaaaaand he subsequently scores

Josh Hader the Padre: 5 appearances but just a total of 3-1/3 innings; 6 ER on 5 hits & 5 BBs; 4 K; ERA = 16.20; WHIP = 3.00

Last night he came into a tie game in the 9th vs the Nats and promptly went BB, 1B, HR* before being yanked. btw, he also wasn't having a

particularly good season even before the surprise deadline trade; in 42 games w/the Brews he had a 4.24 ERA and a very ordinary 1.29 WHIP

Padres currently 18 Games behind the Dodgers in the West (I'm starting to think that's not going to happen) and 1.0 game up on Hader's

former team for the final WC slot.

* the 2nd career HR by the immortal Alex Call, some rookie waiver wire pickup from Cleveland by the Nats a couple weeks ago

For purposes of playoff matchups, that would put the Padres up against the NL Central champ, with the winner of that round facing the Mets.

Mets' preferred opponents, ranked (??):

MIL

STL

SD

PHI

ATL

LA

Albert Pujols moved into second place in career total bases, behind only Hank Aaron.

ATL continues to be all class. They didn't drop Ozuna after he was arrested for hitting his wife and they are playing him today just two days after he was arrested for DUI.

Has Yadier Molina's weekend off from the Cardinals been discussed? He took two days off "for personal reasons". AZ had a ceremony for him and Wainwright but he wasn't there as he went to Puerto Rico because the professional basketball team that he owns was playing a big game.

Not yet. That's…a choice.

Apparently his explanation was that “he had a responsibility” to the team.

Not the Cardinals, of course. No responsibility to that team, apparently.
