Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 I was just visiting https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/2022.shtmlBaseball Reference's Mets statistics page (they still don't have last night's game or box score posted; hence the delay in Schaefer voting) and was looking at the array of "Top 12 Players". I noticed that I was able to identify all twelve faces, and wondered if I'd still know all these guys ten years from now.So... as a test, I decided to look back ten years to see how I would do. One thing led to another and I leaped, ten years at a time, all the way back to 1962.Here's how I did:2022: I correctly identified all twelve players.2012: Nine2002: Six1992: Ten1982: Nine1972: Twelve1962: FiveGive it a try and let us know how well you did!
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 Went 11 for 12 on 1973 page, https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/parkeha01.shtmlHarry Parker didn't do it for me.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 Bassitt and Canha look superficially enough alike in thumb nail photos to trip up a few people.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 Yeah, that's where I fell. Fell hard, too.

Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 I think I have mild prosopagnosia so I'm not good at these kind of tests. I got 2 on the 2022 page and felt good about it and decided to stop there.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 I thought it was that all 2021 Athletics looked the same.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 This is fun! I randomly selected 1993, what a year. Mets sucked and My Mom died.Went 10 for 12. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/thompry01.shtmlRyan Thompson and https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tananfr01.shtmlFrank Tanana were my swings and misses.I can excuse the Tanana I guess, but Thompson came up this week in another thread.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 That was fun!I'm kinda all over the place.2022: 12 of 122012: 11 of 122002: 9 of 121992: 10 of 121982: 5 of 121972: 7 of 121962: 1 of 12 (though I should have known 2 and kicked myself when I saw who it was).
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 Tanana, Tanana, diamonds on the soles of her shoes.I'm sure I'd do better the further back I go. I came up blank on Lindor because he had normal colored hair in the 2022 photo.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 (edited) Perfect 12 on the '62s. Recognized all of 'em instantly, with not a micro-second of hesitation. Here's a trick/hint: On BBref, the players appear in their photos wearing the uni and cap of the team they played the most games for.I'll do the rest later. batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 (edited) Perfect 12 on the '72's, too, just as easy as the 10 years before pics. This is, so far, eeezy peezy. Zvon woulda scored perfect 12s on the 60s and 70s, too. Me and him are/(were) goddamn experts on early Mets photos, especially from the 60s. (/brag). Edited June 9, 2022 by Guest
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 Of course, these are photos of the highest WAR ranked Mets for that season, in descending order. I mean, if it wasnt a top 12 WAR list ... if they threw in a picture of Larry Foss, for example, I might've gotten stumped.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 Perfecto streak snapped. 8 out of 12 on the '82's.

kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 I have no intention of participating in a leader-board event so youcan remove me... as I abstain, courteously.

kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2022 Posted June 13, 2022 Randomly selected: 1989Went 11-12, very disappointed in my bad self for slipping up on https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/carrema01.shtmlMark Carreon (my wayward son), that should have been an easy lay-up and one.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 13, 2022 Posted June 13, 2022 I'm very disappointed in the 1989 Mets for allowing Mark Carreon to slip into their top 12.Mid-season trades, mid-season injuries and half-hearted transitions led to a lot of partial seasons on that team.
