Two of the Mets' top prospects are thirdbasemen, and both are at AAA this year. One is older than the other. One has had a stronger minor league career while the other has had a faster one. Both are trying other positions, but one has experience in the middle of the diamond and the other only on the corner. One is pretty consistently getting higher ratings, but the other has seen his power blossom. One bats from the left side and the other from the right. One has first-round pedigree, and the other is a second-rounder.

Whoever gets to the bigs first gets a leg up in the effort to become a third base fixture. Who will it be?

Vientos is further along, plus I think the Mets would be more comfortable calling him up to be a reserve than Baty. (His skill set, for better and worse, is very similar to that of JD Davis.)

I guess I should have made that an option. Also possible is that neither makes it.

Check out that "Talk to the HAND" release on the photo of Beaty above. It kind of looks like he's flailing wildly, but that's his consistent form.

I'm impressed by that, but he still just strikes me as so boyish, and a carefully manicured swing, in the name of Gregg Jefferies, isn't always the formula for an effective game. I went for Vientos.

Both players are fighting through the pressure of our poll.

Vientos drove in the first run of the season for Syracuse last night and Baty his a home run in Binghamton's first game tonight.

Binghamton is visiting Hartford, and if I didn't have to work tonight, I'd have been there. (rats!)

I'll be there tonight with Fgirl, hopefully he's in the lineup. Vientos has been one of our best hitters this season.

I have not heard that he's hurt. They've also been on the road this whole past week so I have not heard much. They have not yet announced tonight's lineup.

Vientos is ahead for now. I thought they might trade him at the deadline as an mlb ready product.

Is the jury still out on whether Bret Baty is a 3B or an OF?

Neither reaches until 2023. I see Vientos as traded so I will pick Baty

I voted Baty in April and I guess that's still my choice. I think he'll be in the organization longer than Vientos will, but I suppose it's possible that Vientos will get a September call-up, if that's still a thing. (The roster expands a little bit now, right? More players allowed than in August but much less than the previous 40, if I recall.)

I just looked it up:

MLB.com wrote:
Under current rules, Major League teams are allowed to carry 26 players on their everyday active rosters. Clubs can add a 27th player on days in which they play a doubleheader. In September, those roster limits expand to 28 (29 on twin bill days). Teams must use every one of those 28 spots and can also carry a five-player taxi squad with them on road trips.

So only two new roster spots. One will probably be a pitcher, and the other may very well be Vientos. (Or it could be Baty. Or Alvarez. Or maybe neither! Maybe Nick Plummer or Khalil Lee or Joheshwy Fargas.)

I won't be able to make the ceremony.

Please donate mine to the Schaefer Awards museum in Stockholm.
