If it isn't being used to mock a Black player, then what is it?

Just what I said, that he was using it based on the prior reference specifically to tweak Anderson. Maybe he thought he was being funny, I dunno, but I'm sure there's worse shit said on the field

multiple times per game. Hell, Tim Anderson once called an opposing player (oddly, a white one) "a weak-ass fucking nigga!". Is 'Jackie' worse than 'Mutha-Fucka', something that's probably

dropped ten times before the singing of the anthem?

I just don't think every incidence of bench jockeying towards a black player is de facto racism, even one invoking the holy name of Jackie. I don't think what Donaldson said was clever, he's an

irritant and quite possibly a complete tool. I just don't think it was suspension worthy and aren't surprised that he's fighting it.

Matt Carpenter, the now 36 y/o ex-Cardinal picked up by the Yanx as a minor league FA recently, is 3 for 14 since joining the team. All three hits are HRs

Things are so uninspiring in the Bronx that a kid flipping a water bottle has the bleachers cheering. Keep in mind, this happened in a tie game in the bottom of the ninth inning with a man on second base.

^ as to the point above^

So after the games of Friday July 8th and a 12-5 clubbing of the BoSox, the Yanx were just past the halfway point of their season (84 games played) and sitting

on a record of 61-23 (.726) which translates to a pace of 118 wins for the season (117.6). Since that point they are 11 - 20, a .355 clip or a 57 win season.

The problem is that they've still got a double digit lead as neither the 2nd or 3rd place teams back on 7/8 [TBR & BOS] have a winning record since then

either [15-15, 12-20]. And while the 4th & 5th place teams then have made up 6.5 & 8.0 games (still not a lot on a stumbling team over a five week span)

they started from so far back that they're not within striking distance unless this NYY collapse has staying power well into September.

The Blue Jays, who seem like they're always one year away from being one year away, not only have the next best AL East record right now they're also the next

best record in the AL overall. So while the NL has six teams more than ten games over .500, the AL has just the Astros and Yanx [HOU +2.5]. After those two it's

a full 10-game gap until you reach the 61-52 Jays and the rest of the pack fighting it out as if in a contest for who wins the title of tallest midget in the circus.

Yeah, you just wish there were at least Some consequences for five weeks of suckitude besides the possible

3-4 home field disadvantage should they meet up with Houston in the ALCS two-plus months from now.

So at what point does a slump become a collapse?

I guess the easy answer is 'if it continues', but the team that won nearly 3/4 of their games (.726) in the first half (84 G) has now lost two of every three for over

a month now (11-22) and their lead has finally slipped into single-digit range (from a high of 15.5) where not just one but one of three team needs to get hot at

the right time in order to make things interesting [TBR -9.0, TOR -10.0, BAL -10.5]

Immediately ahead is one more with Tampa today [TBR has won 4-0 & 3-1 the last two nights]. Then if the Blue Jays want to show they can play with the big boys

now's their chance because they visit the Bronx for four starting tomorrow which leads right into two with the Mets. By this very hour next week there could be a

full blown case of Pinstripe Panic in da Bronx which would be stunning for a team on pace for 118 wins just six weeks earlier.

The Blue Jays are never as good as people think they are.

The pessimist in me says they won't beat the MFYs.

The optimist in me hopes none of them will transmit Cholera to the Mets while they're in New York.

Traded by NYY (to StL) at the deadline -- Jordan Montgomery: 3 starts*, 16.2 IP, 1 ER, 12 H, 17 K, 3 BB

Traded to NYY (from OAK) at the deadline -- Frankie Montas: 3 starts, 14 IP, 14 ER, 18 H, 8 K, 6 BB

The two weren't traded for each other but the net effect was that they were. The deal for Montas allowed them to move Montgomery.

Another problem is that the return for dealing Montgomery, Harrison Bader, remains on the IL where he's been since June with no set return date.

The idea was to put Bader, a GG CF, in CF so Judge could move back to RF. But the delay of Bader, along with the injury to Matt Carpenter, has

forced the return of Aaron Hicks both to the OF and to the lineup where his .217 BA w/6 HRs has made him the replacement for the deadline

departed Joey Gallo as the #1 target of MFY fan ire.

* including once against NYY

Yanx lost again to Toronto today (Sat afternoon) meaning that not only is this deep slump continuing but it's finally starting to coincide with their pursuers winning

at the MFY's expense and a lead which stubbornly stayed in double digits despite six slumping weeks is now suddenly down to 7 games. And if any of you are

starting to get the idea that I'm obsessed with this potential Yanqui collapse it's only because I'm obsessed with this potential Yanqui collapse.

I mean, first of all, it's the Yanx losing so I'm always going to roll around in that mud no matter what the specifics. But tacked onto that is this notion of ANY team

winning nearly 3/4 of their games for more than half a season [.726 winning pct thru 84 G -- that's not on pace for a good season, it's an historic one] only to pivot

directly into losing more than 2/3 of their games for a stretch now approaching a quarter season: .324 w pct thru 37 G (12-25).

What surprised me by their early season was the pitching. You figured they would hit, they always hit. But then Taillon and Montgomery improved, Severino came

back, Cortes came out of nowhere and it was off to the races. But now check out their runs scored over the last eleven games: 0, 3, 2, 3, 0, 0, 1, 8, 2, 0, 2. They

won two of those, one of the 3's and the 8 and even that one took a miracle (10th inning walk-off GS). So it's not just 2-9 over the last week and a half but seven

of those nine L's came against AL East rivals and five of them have been at home. Blue Jays try and complete the four-game sweep on Sunday in advance of our

arrival in the Bronx for two with Scherzer and (maybe) deGrom.

Oh man, this could be a fuckovalottafun down the stretch!

CRAP! Forgot to DVR the Paul O'Neil number retirement ceremony!

A few of my facebook Yankee fan friends really went over the top today with

how he was a heart and soul battler and The Warrior! He was an all-star three

or four times as a Yank, and never got close to winning an MVP.

Bobby Bonilla is his #1 Sim Scrore match on bbrdotcom. Bonilla!

I have nothing against Bobby Bonilla, I actually kinda like him.

Paul O'Neil isn't deserving his Yankee number being retired.either way.

Very few cliches bothered me more than O'Neill being (constantly) declared "a warrior".

Leave the overly macho military cliches to the NFL if you would, huh? It's stupid there too but they specialize in stupid.

His fans called it aggressive play.

I called it for what it was, roid rage.

So I had kind of put my MFY collapsing fantasy on hold for a bit after our two losses there followed by their journey to the weaker sisters of the AL West.

But after taking the first two of the trip they then dropped four of the next five to go an uninspiring (for them, not for me) 3-4 vs OAK & LAA which left

them at 10-18 for August, their worst monthly record since back in 1991

Aaaaaannnd this is all happening while Tampa (18-9 in August) has gotten hot so that 15.5 game lead in early July that was whittled down to 8.0 more

recently is now down to 6.0. Missing the playoffs entirely is virtually impossible but blowing that kind of division lead would be brutal. And better yet,

the Yanx are headed to Tampa for three this weekend and then, following four at home vs Minnesota (yeah, I know, but they're a decent team this even

though 7-195 vs the Yanx in recent years) they get Tampa again for three in the Bronx. So that's 10 straight vs playoff contenders including six vs their

closest pursuer.

iow, suddenly we might just have ourselves a ballgame here!

They're also only 8 G up on Toronto so iff'n the Jays ever decide to stop being mediocre (13-14 in Aug) they could throw another wrench into the works.

TBR took two of three when they last met in mid-August followed immediately by the Jays taking three of four. Yanx go to Toronto in late Sept.
