A kwiz to fill in gaps during the offseason. Name Mets who were first round picks.

[fimg=600]https://sportshub.cbsistatic.com/i/r/2020/06/10/abec58d4-bcfe-444c-9aaa-a3cc0c122df5/thumbnail/1200x675/3a45e412d96a83a6440d2ecff53796b3/mlb-draft-first-round-2020.jpg[/fimg]

KWIZ RULEZ

  1. One guess per post, no consecutive guessing.

  2. A first-rounder is only a first-rounder if he's picked in the June amateur draft of (mostly) US players, begun in 1965. At various times, this draft has included Canadians or not included Canadians, included Puerto Ricans or not included Puerto Ricans, but the purpose and the pool of players has remained relatively constant.

  3. Not included will be first-rounders from the old January supplemental draft or other supplemental amateur drafts that have existed or not existed over that period. Junebugs only.

  4. Supplemental picks that teams are given at the end of the first round are variously described as first-rounders, 1a picks, or sandwich-round picks. For the purposes of this quiz, we will treat these as legit first-rounders.

  5. A guy drafted by the Mets in the first round only counts if he has actually played for the big club. What we're looking for here is Mets.

  6. Scoring:
    1. A respondent will receive three (3) points for correctly naming a first rounder who played for the Mets after being drafted by the Mets.

    2. Naming a player who played for the Mets after being drafted by a different major league organization nets the competitor five (5) points.

    3. You lose one (-1) point for every incorrect guess.

    4. Three (3) extra points are yours if you name a Met who was not only a first rounder, but an OVERALL #1. Similarly (3) extra points can be gleaned if name a Met who was selected in the first round TWICE

    5. [*]Bonus Scoring: This part will be either the glory or undoing of this quiz. Whenever somebody gets a correct answer, the quizmaster will STOP THE KWIZ and present a BONUS QUESTION, to the person who just answered correctly AND ONLY THAT PERSON. Correctly answering this question results in all or part of a ten(10)-point bonus for that contestant. These bonus questions may be related to first-round picks, or merely Mets related, or possibly related to nothing at all.
      • Frequently, revealing correct answers in the regular competition may reveal correct BONUS ROUND answers, or vice-versa, so pay attention.

    6. [*]Any guesses submitted while a correct respondent was answering his or her bonus question will not be fielded by the quizmaster until after the bonus is completed.

    7. [*]Don't cheat and look things up. You know who you are, and God sees all.

    8. Due to the volume of correct answers, presenting the data of correct and incorrect answers as well as scoring may prove problematic. Additionally, stopping mid-play to present a bonus question segment almost GUARANTEES to send the game sideways. Management thanks you for your patience.

Previously, smart money was on BatMagadanLeadoff to conquer all challengers in this contest, but he seems to be sitting October out, so this kwiz is ANYBODY'S GAME.

Let us commence. Name a Met who was an MLB first-round draft pick.

Seawolf hits the board first with a Mets #1 overall pick! Six points with a chance for 10 more!

Seawolf's bonus question! Over the 60 seasons of New York Mets action, what is the average number of first rounders the team has fielded in each season?

This is not an easy question, as we are looking for the answer rounded to the nearest hundredth! So we need an answer like 3.64 or 14.93! Good luck!

Ten points can be tough booty to corral, and so that question stays on the board. Good news is that there is no negative for getting a bonus wrong.

If it comes up again, please know that Seawolf was low in his estimate.

Next comes Frayed Knot, who has correctly chosen Francisco Lindor, the eighth-overall pick selected in 2011 by the future Cleveland Guardians.

Scoring

  • Seawolf: 6

    Frayed Knot: 5

Bonus question for Frayed Knot: How many first rounders overall have appeared for the Mets?

Frayed Knot comes in low.

Next we come back to Seawolf, who has correctly answered with Darryl Strawberry, the #1 overall pick for the Mets, and therefore good for six points.

Scoring

  • Seawolf: 12

    Frayed Knot: 5

Sorry for the deliberate pace, but it should take us deep into the winter.

As I pause to walk the dogs, I give Seawolf a second bonus question: How many Mets first-rounders were born in New York?

I hope to come back and give you more scoring updates before dinner. ANYONE CAN BE A WINNER!

Just noticed this rule. Cap'n David Wright.
