Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Just riffing here.Football: DJ Dozier (Vince Coleman, John Stearns)Basketball: Chris Young (Tony Clark, Terry Bross, Austin Jackson, Frank Howard if we're counting managers)Ice Hockey: Tom GlavineGolf: Yogi Berra (Tom Glavine, Livan Hernandez, Yoenis Céspedes, yadda, yadda)Speed Skating: Lee MazzilliBallroom Dancing: Bobby ValentineDecathlon: Rod KanehlSurfing: El SidPugilism: Ray KnightObviously many or (at one time) even most schoolboy athletes starred in another sport but stuck with baseball in college, but I include Austin Jackson and Tom Glavine because they were among the top recruits in their class. We need a soccer guy and a tennis guy, at the very least. Maybe a lacrosse dude, too.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 I'd bet Butch Huskey would have been one heckuva soccer player. In a Binghamton game, I saw a ground ball get under his glove (at third base) and it went off his foot all the way to the first baseman.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 20, 2021 Author Posted September 20, 2021 Lacrosse is tough because it's generally a spring sport, creating a conflict with baseball. But so is outdoor track and that didn't stop Kanehl.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 20, 2021 Author Posted September 20, 2021 Tim Tebow not a Mets guy.
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 It has been mentioned a few times over the course of the season that Jeff McNeil is a scratch golfer.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 20, 2021 Author Posted September 20, 2021 His love for pulling the low ball suggests as much.Yogi and Glavine were also both reported as scratch linksmen (Yogi, for decades), but if Instagram WWW.INSTAGRAM.COM anything is credible about this 59 business, yeah, maybe McNeil is our guy.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2021 Posted September 21, 2021 There was a long reliever in the 90s. Was supposed to be a basketball stud. I think he was lefty? Maybe Allen something.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2021 Posted September 21, 2021 John Franco hosted an annual charity bowling tournament in his day. Was said to roll well.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2021 Posted September 21, 2021 Allen Watson. Wow that took a long time.
dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2021 Posted September 21, 2021 Richie Hebner was a hockey player. Another low ball hitter.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 21, 2021 Author Posted September 21, 2021 Yeah, I think Watson said his ultimate goal was coaching basketball. That's why I tried to work around "Accomplished." I'm sure there were any number of schoolboy hardwood terrors who ultimately chose baseball and became Mets, but I was trying to find the highest level of achievement. And Bross and Young both played Division I and participated in the NCAA tournament.Check out this beast:http://www.jfkrush.com/kingmanfan/67pic11.jpg> http://www.jfkrush.com/kingmanfan/67pic25.jpg> http://www.jfkrush.com/kingmanfan/67pic26.jpg> http://www.jfkrush.com/kingmanfan/67pic28.jpg> http://www.jfkrush.com/kingmanfan/67pic29.jpg> http://www.jfkrush.com/kingmanfan/67pic30.jpg>It's always interesting how many of these guys, especially ones you may not think of fast, were ball-carrying quarterbacks. Both Gary Carter and Ed Charles were all-state as option-running signal callers. But Stearns was an NCAA All-American in college. And Dozier, of course, played 43 NFL games, so he got the nod.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 21, 2021 Author Posted September 21, 2021 Not as many good shots out there of this guy.https://thumbs.worthpoint.com/zoom/images2/1/0510/11/darryl-strawberry-high-school_1_b45e0078a6be04934cf45342638647a8.jpg> https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/70102/70102-7Fr.jpg>

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted September 23, 2021 Posted September 23, 2021 Stroman I believe got to Duke on a soccer scholarship. Check that tho
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 23, 2021 Author Posted September 23, 2021 I think Stro's second sport was b-ball. I'd joke that it sure wasn't a haircut scholarship, but I'd be afraid he'd kick my ass.https://goduke.com/images/2012/1/24/HIYEPBVXIERQAWH.20120124181633.jpg?width=300>
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted September 23, 2021 Posted September 23, 2021 I remember Bross from his Red Storm days. He had the body for a college center, but he didn't really have a basketball skill set.
