Just riffing here.



Football: DJ Dozier (Vince Coleman, John Stearns)

Basketball: Chris Young (Tony Clark, Terry Bross, Austin Jackson, Frank Howard if we're counting managers)

Ice Hockey: Tom Glavine

Golf: Yogi Berra (Tom Glavine, Livan Hernandez, Yoenis Céspedes, yadda, yadda)

Speed Skating: Lee Mazzilli

Ballroom Dancing: Bobby Valentine

Decathlon: Rod Kanehl

Surfing: El Sid

Pugilism: Ray Knight



Obviously many or (at one time) even most schoolboy athletes starred in another sport but stuck with baseball in college, but I include Austin Jackson and Tom Glavine because they were among the top recruits in their class.



We need a soccer guy and a tennis guy, at the very least. Maybe a lacrosse dude, too.

I'd bet Butch Huskey would have been one heckuva soccer player.

In a Binghamton game, I saw a ground ball get under his glove (at third base) and it went off his foot all the way to the first baseman.

Lacrosse is tough because it's generally a spring sport, creating a conflict with baseball. But so is outdoor track and that didn't stop Kanehl.

There was a long reliever in the 90s. Was supposed to be a basketball stud. I think he was lefty? Maybe Allen something.

John Franco hosted an annual charity bowling tournament in his day. Was said to roll well.

Yeah, I think Watson said his ultimate goal was coaching basketball.



That's why I tried to work around "Accomplished." I'm sure there were any number of schoolboy hardwood terrors who ultimately chose baseball and became Mets, but I was trying to find the highest level of achievement. And Bross and Young both played Division I and participated in the NCAA tournament.

It's always interesting how many of these guys, especially ones you may not think of fast, were ball-carrying quarterbacks. Both Gary Carter and Ed Charles were all-state as option-running signal callers. But Stearns was an NCAA All-American in college. And Dozier, of course, played 43 NFL games, so he got the nod.

I remember Bross from his Red Storm days. He had the body for a college center, but he didn't really have a basketball skill set.
