Never fulfilled his promise as the 10th overall draft pick and 2nd HS pick that year out of Asheville NC (behind #1 overall J. Upton) or ever really nailed down a full-time job at any of his numerous stops across 14 seasons.

Now 34 y/o, he's kind of OK at everything which makes him a logical target considering our current circumstances. Annoyingly, he had his best power production in his half-season with the Yanx a few years back.

Fun Non-Fact: Upon hearing the stunning/not-stunning news that Mallex Smith is recovering from a broken foot, the team at Mets Roster Central started having a late-night rumination on the question "Just how close would we be to Tebow Time had the Heisman Winner not elected to hang 'em up this spring?"

With the team currently getting buy on two outfielders plus Dom Smith and Jake Hager, they probably need two more just to call it an outfield, but they're calling it one now. Sticking with this configuration, they'd probably be at most within five outfielders injuries of calling up #15, with Mason Williams, Drew Ferguson, Sebastian Elizalde, Quinn Brodey and Matt Winaker probably still keeping the team from adding spectacle to disaster. But depending on who started the hottest, that could all break down.

So yeah, welcome Cameron Maybin. I'd imagine we'd be clearing room for Juan Lagares at his old locker again if Mike Trout didn't get hurt.

Tebow was a credible, but hardly good given his age, hitter at AA in 2018. His injury that year probably killed his last best chance at making a cameo in the big leagues. A poor 2019 performance at AAA and 2020 getting wiped by COVID might have taken that dead dream and buried it - was he really even getting regular AAA ABs this year?

MRC didn't have room for him in AAA when camp opened. But between the time he retired and the time the minor league season opened, and then again between then and today ... a path has been revealed.

Too late for 🎀, sadly.

About as close as any other player who hit .273 in AA and .163 in AAA in his last minor league years. (now two years removed)

To put it another way, not very close.

I would have signed Maybin even if Tebow were available.

I don't think anybody would disagree with you. I certainly wasn't trying to suggest otherwise, if you read the rest of the post.

I suspect that, when J.D. returns (he seems to be on the fastest track), he might initially see more time outfielding than infielding.

I don't think we have solid information on that.

Maybin may be the most definitive SOS move the Mets have made since James Loney.

The Mets are, remarkably, out of replacement-level players at this point. And you can do worse for a dollar. An occasional hit will suffice.

Plus it's not like we have four starting pitchers on the injured list too, or anything.

=nymr83 post_id=64714 time=1621403986 user_id=54]What else is out there exactly? We're looking at a team that is down Pillar, Conforto, Nimmo, Almora, & McNeil - and that is just the capable outfielders!

can't really blame the organizational depth on that one and Maybin at least represents an above-replacement level player with experience.

Maybin almost made a run out of nothing the other night, reaching on a dropped third strike, stealing a base and being stranded on third. Plays a decent outfield and we could do worse. Not crazy about him batting third, though.

Desperate situations sometimes require desperate measures.

A drowning man doesn't complain about the color of the life jacket he is thrown*.

Ryan Braun?

Eduardo Nuñez?

What would they have to give up for Braun? Of course I'd prefer him over Maybin.

Nunez and Maybin appear to be roughly equivalent.
