dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 This ties the team record for strikeouts in three straight games, right? Gooden had that run in 1984 where he struck out 11, 16, and 16. That might still be the National League record, too.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Wow, Jacob going for the CG shutout. Impressive.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 To steal a line from the late Channel 11 sportscaster Jerry Girard (one which he used with Wayne Gretzky): Jacob deGrom has just been named 'Player of the Week' ... for Next week!.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Hits in 2021Lindor = 11 in 15 startsdeGrom = 5 in 4 starts
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Take him out Luis. Wtf. He's done enough. Don't let him get hurt.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Sasquatch, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Complete Game Shutout in 2021 are all mythical beasts, but we've just seen one.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Just another day at the office for the best pitcher in baseball.

RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 (edited) A better ERA than most of the team's BAs.He also struck out over half the batters he faced. Edited April 23, 2021 by Guest
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 With 2 days off next week (not counting Covid, snow and rain postponements), will we have to wait a full week to see him, on the 30th @PHI, or will he pitch on the 28th v BOS (a 6:40 home start)?

After fanning 19 batters, Cone had two chances to record his 20th strikeout of the game as the last two Phillie batters, Wes Chamberlain and Dale Murphy, doubled and grounded out, respectively.[FIMG=333]https://kronozio.blob.core.windows.net/images/card/c604305a306d4f228533b665337d9733_front.jpg[/FIMG]
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 If you measure great pitching performances not by the number of hits given up but rather the self esteem of your competition, I think this gem stands on its own.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 It's kinda weird to face up to this but deGrom is like, better than Seaver

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 The problem remains that it may be a question we'll never be able to resolve because Seaver didn't tend to get removed when he was pitching brilliantly. They're kind of playing different games. JdG's shutout today was the second of his career, needing 59 to catch up to Seaver. But wow. I hate to expect this every time out, but I'm starting to expect this every time out.

They are what they are
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 Coming out of sublime 2018, I had elevated deGrom in my estimation to maybe a few feet shy of Doc and Kooz overall, wishing to see more longevity and a few complete games (period differences notwithstanding) before totally endorsing the notion that Jake was the best thing since Seaver bread. Those guys pitched very well for very long even if Doc is usually boiled down to his first two years and Kooz is hat-tipped mostly for pennant race and postseason performance. Tom was implicitly out of reach. Also, we'd just come off anointing Harvey and, to a lesser extent, Thor (in a social media era when everybody with three promising starts is OMG GOAT DAY!!!). I think I wanted an undeniable sense that deGrom could just go out there and keep doing what he was doing to the point that it wasn't a phenomenon, but simply what he does. Now? We're in year eight of his career that was very good before it shot up to great; his consistency at the absolute top level of the game has been transcendent; last night speaks for itself (just one shutout, but part of a run where this kind of game has become common for him); and, well, maybe reach is all relative.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 From the stupid side of the fence, which is easy to do when you follow G-Fafif, I checked the Washington Post's game story. The comments include suggestions that Jake is on steroids and Schwarber said, “It's just one of those days that he was on,” Kyle Schwarber, the Nationals' left fielder, said of deGrom[ ]" as if this was a fluke.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 Schwarber argued after he was called out for the 15th K. SNY didn't stay focused on him, but it appeared his gripe was coming out of his ass.
