I could not find that this thread had been started already, so forgive me if this is a duplicate.

Season opener slated for May 4th. Tickets are on sale for all May games. I've just secured a four pack of seats for Saturday, May 22nd, a 6:35 pm game against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (the mini-Phillies) and I have to tell you, I'm pretty excited about attending a live baseball event.

Considered also the May 8th game but at that point Fboy will only be 8 days past his second Covid vax. By May 22nd only Fgirl will require the pre-game Covid test.

I'd like to see the Syracuse Mets sometime this season at the new Worcester Red Sox ballpark, however, Worcester has not yet announced ticketing options. I know they have a 6-game series there in May.

The Syracuse Mets announced yesterday that they'd be offering free game-day rapid Covid tests for fans attending. Which means I can bring Fgirl there in the afternoon and get her cleared for evening baseball. No need to find a pharmacy or urgent care to do the test. So that's a plus.

I was thinking of a road trip to Syracuse (6 hours from MD), to see them and some of the CPF, and then "down" to Binghamton (1 1/2 hours) but I can't find dates where Syracuse and Binghamton are home during the same weekdays (there's one but the Mets are in BAL that week).

Looks like full season minor league teams are going to go forward with a newfangled 28-man roster limit.

This isn't good, and I expect minor leaguers to be called up who've perhaps never been allowed to exceed 90 pitches.

Syracuse played their first game in 20 months tonight, https://www.milb.com/gameday/railriders-vs-mets/2021/05/04/646372#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=646372 beating the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (pick a town!) Railriders 5-2, getting six good innings out of last-minute starter Jerad Eickoff, who gave up two runs, striking out five and walking none. After a scoreless seventh by Stephen Nogosek, Drew Smith went the last two innings for the save.

Power came in the form of homers by David Thompson and Martin Cervenka, who hopes to be the first Czech-born Met. Speed came in the form of two steals by Drew Ferguson and another by Wilfredo Tovar. I think that equals the big league club's steal totals after a month, but I'm just guessing at that.

Tovar and secondbaseman Drew Jackson — a Rule V pick from the Dodgers — combined to turn three double plays, so it was a good win with a little of everything.

My buddy was there and shared a few photos on social media. Lots of ballpark improvements since fans last attended a game. Very excited to go there later this month.

Budget constrictions and, frankly, the need for some professional palate cleansing, has led to some turnover at the Mets Roster Central staff, replacing a good number of vets with some fresh faces right out of the top roster schools. But young and old alike on our staff frequently find themselves baffled by the inanities of roster philosophy at the professional level.

The Syracuse Mets of AAA East (apparently, the International League is no longer a thing, because fuck you, that's why) are allowed the bloated bloatedness of 28 players on their roster, plus a taxi squad of three more dudes. Given 31 slots, they've elected to fill 25. And the manner with which they've filled them suggests they are expecting a mud-bogged 27-inning marathon, filling the overwhelming number of slots with pitchers, allowing themselves a bench of only three players — a utility infielder and two backup catchers.

They have the DH for now (and if Manfred gets his way, forever), so they don't have to pinch-hit for the pitcher, but that means one of those backup catchers has to DH. But it's weird stuff. Manager Chad Kreuter bragged about the versatility of his roster, describing them as a "roster of Swiss army knives," but that's going to be as much a response to necessity as anything if they keep this complexion going forward. (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre had Luke Voit DH-ing and LOLeading off last night.)

And yeah, only three outfielders. What the hell? Sebastian Elizalde has been assigned to Binghamton for now, and Johneshwy Fargas, Mallex Smith, and Mason Williams are thus far MIA, so that's four of their five top-credentialed minor league outfielders absent for now.

Circles within circles. And yet, somehow they managed to pack their roster with the maximum allowable number of Drews.

I think that each Major League team has a "taxi squad" so someone is nearby in case of a Covid diagnosis. That might be where Johneshwy Fargas and Mallex Smith are at the moment.

Took in my first live baseball in 21 months yesterday. It was all I hoped it could be.

We had great weather.

There were numerous new features, viewpoints and places to see and explore, as they have put quite a bit of money and energies into making this a better place to take in a game.

We saw J.D. Davis go yard from one of the new berms they have there. The Mets ultimately won 9-8 on a walk off wild pitch in the bottom of the 9th (only after the bullpen blew a 7-2 lead over the 7th through 9th innings).

Also, https://cnycentral.com/news/local/liverpool-girl-gets-girl-scouts-national-medal-of-honor-for-saving-cousin-from-drowning my daughter was recognized for a Girl Scout award that she received earlier yesterday, and so they put us all on the big screen and read off the summary of what she did to earn her award. The GM then hooked us up with a bunch of concession vouchers.

With the expected restoration of several injured Mets to their roster today, the Syracuse MiniMets will be getting some of their soldiers back not a minute too soon, having just made their most positive statement of the year, taking the last three games of a six-game road series against the Rochester RedWings, grabbing four of six overall in the set, and escaping last place in the AAA East NorthEast Division. They are still five games out of third and fourth, but the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and Buffalo Bison, who share that position, have each lost three in a row themselves, so the time is ripe to strike.

Centerfielder Mason Williams, who may not be joining the big club soon, has carried the big club thus far — slashing at .373 / .458 / .569 // 1.026 to date in the young season. In just 19 games, he has logged eight extra-base hits, including a grand slam in game one of Saturday's doubleheader sweep. When not doing his thing on the ballfield, Mase raises money and awareness in the on behalf of those who struggle with Choroideremia (CHM), a genetic condition that leads to vision loss.

While Jerad Eickoff's four wins may jump out at you, the real story in the starting rotation this week is our buddy Franklyn Kilome, who notched one of those mythical complete games in throwing a one-hit shutout against the RedWings. Yeah, it was a seven-inning game, but dominance is dominance, as Franky struck out seven and walked three, holding Rochester hitless for 6 2/3 innings before yielding a single to center with one out to go.

His coach visited the mound and he struck out the final batter for the victory. Next time you see him in Queens, welcome him warmly give him a big hand for his big feat.

Anchoring the bullpen so far is 2019 Met Stephen Nogosek. No-Go has appeared in 8 games so far, totaling 12 1/3 innings and registering a 1.46 ERA — which is really low if your last name isn't "deGrom." Stephen has struck out 18 while walking only six so far and aims to return to the Mets real soon to keep Addison Reed's legacy alive.

While the organization is doing their best to stay transactive, the Mets of AAA are succumbing to the talent-suck, instability, and churn traumas of providing backup to up an MLB squad that has been in desperate need. Yesterdays Syracuse Mets debacle saw them fall behind the Worcester Red Sox 6-0 after one, 8-0 after two, and 10-0 after three. If this was Prep League baseball or Babe Ruth League, this would have invoked the mercy rule, but the game carried on, and the Mets tried to battle their way back, but ultimately succumbed 13-7.

Succumbing has been a habit when these two teams meet, as the loss capped a highly improbable six-game sweep by Worcester. They won the low-scoring ones and the high-scoring ones, and they did it in the Syracuse home park, at times with Fman and family in attendance. Counting their last four games in Worcester, the Mets have dropped 10 in a row to the Sox and, well, fuck that shit.

The losing streak stretches back to the previous series at Buffalo for a total of seven loses in a row, and a 2-8 record over their last 10.

It generally hasn't been pretty.

The most consistent starter over the last two weeks has been Tylor Megill, who you may remember as the eighth-round pick out of Arizona from 2018, but probably don't. Tylor has only been permitted to throw 9 1/3 innings over his last two starts, but he's struck out 11, walked four, and given up only three runs, for a 2.89 ERA. He's an enormous righthander (6'7" 230) that I suspect the Mets are lookign at as a reliever, but he's starting for now. Some minor league followers like him and place him among the Mets top four or five pitching prospect. I myself am skeptical. But he's bringing it in AAA and not a lot of others can say that right now.

Providing a touch of moist relief over this dry, dry spell has been mild-mannered-sounding lefty Tom Windle. Tom has given up no runs or hits in his last five appearances, totalling five innings, although he has walked four and hit a guy, while striking out four. Tom's batting averages against have been crazy low — deGrominating — versus righties as well as lefties, so if he can get some sort of harness on his control, he can be a real asset. He signed this offseason after declaring free agency as a Red Sox prospect. He only appeared twice for the Boston system, having mostly been with the Dodgers and Phils.

He comes from the Minneapolis suburb of Apple Grove, so in my mind he learned his cutter from Jerry Koosman. And yeah, I know that rooting for a breakthrough from a guy who is on his fourth organization without so much as a cup of coffee isn't the safest box in which to place your hope, but you do what you do.

Providing the most offense over the last 15 games has been, believe it or not, Khalil Lee. After getting his head handed to him in the bigs, he has gone .316 / .480 / .553 // 1.033 over the last 15 games for the team. He's still striking out, racking up 10 in his last 12 games, but that's a lot better than he was doing with the big club. And that .480 OPB can not be dismissed. It won't be — especially after you see him over his full season and it drops to all of .479.

At this level, anyhow, Khalil won't be kept off the bases. That's encouraging, because the power is there and the speed game is unimpeachable, and he looks good in Willie Mays' number
