MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 Gerrit Cole cheated? Tsk TskFrom the LA Times via Yahoo:https://sports.yahoo.com/yankees-gerrit-cole-named-ball-150540946.htmlhttps://sports.yahoo.com/yankees-gerrit-cole-named-ball-150540946.html“Hey Bubba, it's Gerrit Cole, I was wondering if you could help me out with this sticky situation,” the pitcher wrote, adding a wink emoji. “We don't see you until May, but we have some road games in April that are in cold weather places. The stuff I had last year seizes up when it gets cold.”Later

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Had to go 6 years tho. Wow.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Wow indeed. There was talk about the two sides being far apart early on so six years for a guy you'll turn 33 mid-season will be seen as the Yanx blinking most likely, particularly since he's already begun transitioning from middle IF to corner IF. Also maybe a case of buying high, his 2020 OPS was a full 100 points higher than any other single season and only two of his previous years were within 200 points of that mark which is saying a lot when all those other (six full) seasons were played at Coors Field.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Wow.Lest it go unsaid, 2020 was only nominally a baseball season. Maybe he's great, but it's hard to see this as anything but buying high.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 Yanx trade four prospects for two years of Pirates hurler, and former #2 overall draft pick (2010), Jameson TaillonTaillon didn't pitch in 2020
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 I might be wrong but the MFYs have never traded away a prospect that's amounted to anything.OTOH they also have a good record of acquiring big-name guys who don't fully succeed
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 I can think of some Yankee-prospect tradeoffs that made a splash (our own Justin Wilson!), as well as some burgeoning stars traded off for full-blown stars. How far back are we talking?
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 I dunno. The Cashman Era is now ridiculously long. The only guys I can think of off the top of my head are like Clippard and Melky Cabera. But like the guys they gave up for Stanton or Michael Pineda... The whole Chapman thing (4 prospects who went nowhere to Cincy, then to the Cubs for Gleyber Torres, then resigning) It was like coming and going with that wife-beating steroid cheat
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 I hear ya. A Willie McGee and a Jay Buhner every now and then sure used to keep the winters warm.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Masahiro Tanaka's stint with the Yanx is over as he heads back to Japan to become a Rakuten EagleI think Rakuten makes cheap insta-noodle dishes but I'm not sure. I don't think they make eagles.More interesting to note is that, behind Gerrit Cole, the Yanx appear to be relying on three reclamation projects who haven't pitched much lately. The 2-3-4 in their rotation could be the recently acquired Corey Kluber and Jameson Taillon, plus holdover/TJ-rehabbing Luis Severino. All threewere good and promising at one point, but they also combined for just 17 ML starts / 85 IP in 2019 [Kluber = 7 /36; Taillon = 7 / 37; Severino = 3 /12] and just one start / one IP (Kluber) in 2020The most recent ML appearances for each was: Kluber on 7/26/20; Severino on 9/28/19; Taillon on 5/1/19

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 Yanx manager Aaron Boone is taking an immediate leave of absence to have a pacemaker installed . Surgery to be done later today. Boone, 47, has had heart issues going back to his college days, but this is still a big whoa!!

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2021 Posted March 27, 2021 Luke Voit's kneed for knee surgery pushes back his start to the season and means Jay Bruce will be the starting 1st baseman in the Bronx
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 Bruce will probably hit 50 home runs there
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 Maybe, but it's not like Bank One in Philly led to a Bruce revival. He might need vitamins.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2021 Author Posted March 28, 2021 Quick. Who led the AL in home runs last year?It was Luke f'n Voit!!!Who knew?Bruce will thrive in that bandbox. And they have such a dominating righty hitting lineup, they won't face too many lefty pitchers, so he'll get to play a lot.Later
