Dan Matlack, Jon's son, must have jumped the gun, or misinterpreted/misspoke about a Hall of Fame induction with that picture outside the Met Hall & Museum as the tweet was deleted. The Instagram pic, and original caption, is still up.

Plus Al Jackson gets the long and meritorious service award, posthumously.

You know who always seems to be outside the conversation? Howard Johnson.

I'm not sure where the line should be, but he was, by most fair measures, a top-ten Mets batter all-time, almost certainly ahead of Hall-of-Famers such as Mookie Wilson and Rusty Staub. Kraney Krane too. (Although, most "fair" measures aren't particularly fair when it comes to pinch-hitters.)

BTW, the date for Mets HOF Day is Sunday, May 17, prior to the 1:10 game vs PIT.

Matlack! Easy to remember the head shot he took, everything else added up to an A+ Mets career

Darling 1986 WS Game 1

Alfonso, often underappreciated

According to the media guide, date of induction to be July 31st.

August 28th is the date of the Koos36 retirement.

Interestingly, in the Mets By The Numbers section, all 6 retired, and soon to be officially retired numbers are spotlighted, along with two others, Carter and Wright. Hmmmmmm...

Speaking of tribute, I 🚲 ed by citifield today and they're got rent-a-fence around the Seaver entrance. They're going to to something there, likely the statue

The media guide dates may not be firm, based on DiComo's current reporting, understandable in the scheme of pandemic things.

The Mets also plan to retire Koosman's No. 36, which they had intended to do last summer before COVID-19 interfered. That ceremony is now tentatively scheduled for September.

In the second half of the season, the Mets will also induct three new members into their team Hall of Fame: Jon Matlack, Ron Darling and Edgardo Alfonzo.

Why not Hernandez? Where the fuck is Keith in this conversation? Or Straw? What the hell did Carter do for the Mets that Keith or Darryl didn't? Or Cleon Jones? Or Tommie Agee?

fWAR of all Mets players currently in the Holla Fame, who haven't had their numbers retired by the team.

Gary Carter 12.8

Tom Glavine 12.0

Pedro Martinez 9.8

Willie Mays 2.1

Nolan Ryan 3.9

Eddie Murray 3.9

Richie Ashburn 2.0

Joe Torre 2.0

Rickey Henderson 1.6

Roberto Alomar 1.5

Duke Snider 0.7

Warren Spahn 0.1

Yogi Berra -0.1

My feeling remains that the best way to confront any controversy over who should or should not have their number retired is to realize that their are countless other ways to honor a player.

Also, these ceremonies work out a lot better if you make a point to schedule some doubleheaders. When Jerry Koosman was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame, the crowd in the stands was embarrassingly sparse.

That's Mets fWAR only, by the way. And 12.8 is supposed to impress me? That's two all-star seasons. That's not number retiring territory. Which is what what Gary Carter the Met was. Two really good seasons and then doneski. Like put a fork in him done.

Hall of Fame? So Carter deserves to have his Met # retired over Keith because people think that Gary had a better career with the Expos than Keith had with the Cards? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

I've always thought Carter's value to the Mets was greater than his stats. Just like Casey Stengel, who presumably had his number retired for reasons other than his won-loss percentage. I'd like to see Carter's number retired. I also think it's a little late. Honoring the 1986 team has always been a little complicated.

Here's a nice story about Carter: https://metsmerizedonline.com/2021/04/gary-carter-sometimes-there-is-crying-in-baseball.html/https://metsmerizedonline.com/2021/04/gary-carter-sometimes-there-is-crying-in-baseball.html/
