G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 The messiness of the CAN'T LOSE 'EM ALL presentation really captures the play, game and Met mood of the moment. In a year whose back page successes figure to be increasingly about home runs, an exciting defensive climax is celebrated, while not losing sight of how everything else is going wrong.PETE OF THE MOMENT has a Rockwell feel to it — Norman, not the “Somebody's Watching Me” guy. Bonus points for invoking supergroup Asia.Plethora of impressive wordplay in this round.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 Pete Of The Moment, Meltdown and Mickey Mouth Club!
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 I would have voted Vargas Baby, but the ghost of Mariano Rivera appeared on it.Later
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 We are already through June 24. Wow. Most of 2019 kinda sucked.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 Now we're into it. Several excellent covers in this round which would easily trounce nearly every cover we've so far considered:MICKEY MOUTH CLUB. Brill.
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 I love the nice positive ones this week! Went with "Pete of the Moment," "Rail Splitters" and "Revival Meeting."
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 Whatever happened to "If it bleeds, it leads?" I may have to report you to the Journalmalism Guild
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 Pete of the Moment has some real potential.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 Mets win, they get good press.Mets blow leads and threaten reporters, that's the headline.Play better ball, get better wood.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 I love the nice positive ones this week! Went with "Pete of the Moment," "Rail Splitters" and "Revival Meeting."Thems were great, and I selected one of those, but I was also beguiled by the play-at-the-plate photo illustration that decorated YOU CAN'T LOSE 'EM ALL.The goofy Cardinal baby blues only add to the way the photo hearkened back to a day where, if you could get an unobstructed shot of a play at the plate, you knew you had tomorrow's back pate.I couldn't not click MICKEY MOUTH CLUB also, especially with the vapor coming out of Mickey's mouth.
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 I don't think the headline "Vargas, Baby" is that great, but I think the composition of that page otherwise is really good. It's a solid photo -- wind in the hair, you can see the grip on the ball just coming out of his glove, the concentration in his eyes. It's a great photo. Likewise, the angle of the Wrigley Alonso photo is one you don't see too often.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 VARGAS BABY is very good imo, got a vote from me. Tells the story, clever enough on the headline, good picture as mentioned, classic NYDN lookPETE OF THE MOMENT doesn't look like a tabloid newspaper; it looks like the New York Times magazine or something. Get that crap outta here
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 Well, it's Newsday, and that almost never is consistent with the others.Stupid headline, but I can't argue with that photo, and it got my vote.
