Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 Well, I haven't voted for either yet, but I'll say it: the Wright cover has a dumb headline. The pun is too cheesy and not clever enough to be IMO a true TCD winner. I also don't like that they change the coloring AND italicize half the headline. Just do one or the other!I also think the Newsday cover is flawed fwiw: I don't like it when the subhead continues a headline instead of illuminating it, but they made that problem for themselves by choosing a pun that boxed them in to having to do that.I didn't support either of these covers as they advanced through the ranks I don't think, and I'm gonna hold my nose and vote for one now.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2019 Author Posted January 4, 2019 I didn't vote for either of these covers in the first round either. I preferred the News' take on Wilmer's walk-off homer and the Post version of David Wright's farewell. I think HEART OF THE CITI is a much better cover than A WRIGHT TO REMEMBER.http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180416_NYDN_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180930_NYP_01.jpg>

Just do one or the other!I agree with every word. But it also has a picture of David Wright waving goodbye to an adoring crowd. They could have written the headline in Turkish with a poo-colored crayon and I'd still vote for it.

Me, I've been hating David Wright ever since 2012. It's not even Wright's fault. I've been taking it out on Wright that the Mets chose to re-sign him. Jeez, Sandy Alderson at the top of his game, getting top prospects Wheeler for Beltran and Syndergaard for a 39 year old knuckleballer, god only knows what kind of studs Sandy woulda hauled for the Mets if those idiot moron Wilpons didn't fucking meddle and let Sandy do what any sentient human being woulda done --trade David Wright.

And I certainly can't fault anyone for thinking like this. Winning it all is, after all, the ultimate goal. But I credit Sandy for having his pulse on the sentiment of the fan base. And yes, sentiment counts for something. David Wright was a special case. Beltran was my favorite Met of that era, but no one garnered as much affection as Wright. He is a truly one of a kind. If you gave me a choice of trading away Wright in 2012 and having that mean we win the WS in 2015, or we keep Wright, he stays healthy and sets every Mets record, gets 3000 hits and makes the Hall of Fame, but we don't win any WS during that time, i would really be torn. Anderson's real blunder was failing to trade Reyes and then letting him walk for nothing. So stupid.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 Until Wright finally says the words "I'm retiring" this will be a never-ending story and should not be the reason to remember this year in Stockholm. The headlines may be exactly the same each year until this contract expires and David has squeezed every last dollar out of it.Later

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Author Posted January 11, 2019 http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2018/4-02w.jpg>There won't be a WHERE THERE'S A WIL in the Final Four this year, as Wilmer Flores endures his second consecutive defeat and now has no remaining covers in this year's competition. It will therefore be David Wright's A WRIGHT TO REMEMBER that will advance, and will face MIDNIGHT BADNESS next week in one of our two semi-final battles.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 This is how I feel about David Wright's retirement being a 2018 story. If anything, it will belong in 2019. Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 I thought Wright was a shoe-in to win. Now I'm not so sure. Maybe Smile High takes it in the end.Are we sending our spokesmodels to Egypt? No wonder we need money in the community chest. I love this contest but I feel like the cost is getting a bit out of hand.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Author Posted January 11, 2019 It's okay. The Mexicans are paying for it.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2019 Author Posted January 12, 2019 Marissa was upset that Shelby got a day off last week. She said, "If she's allergic to zebras, then I'm allergic to Sphinxes!"
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 It's good that Bob is there to fill-in. I hope that Marissa and Shelby resolve their differences before the finale.
