Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 The more I think about it, it's the only thing that makes sense. If you're Jeff Wilpon, you can't come out and say you're all in, and show up everywhere and say all this bullshit and then fund the same payroll again. If Brodie really is a good agent, he knows how badly that plays out. And the Cano trade. I think it was dumb anyway. But it becomes really inexplicably dumb if you then end up with Lagares starting. At this point, we would have been better off keeping Bruce. Which is why this is happening. Jeff Wilpon flew out to Vegas and had an ultra secret meeting with him. Besides. The latest rumblings are that Machado is going to the MFYs. Fred's gonna lose his damn mind.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 This is what I want. Pollock also makes sense, despite his history of injuries, as he can hit and plays CF well but this is much, much better. Conforto in LF, Nimmo in CF, Harper in RF and we'll figure out Cespedes when he returns. Harper takes the Mets from the 3d or 4th best team in a very competitive division to the best (really, not just in BVW's mind). Boras wants 10 years and more than $300M so BVW has some work to do but he knows how Boras thinks so maybe he can make this happen. The Cano/Diaz and Ramos moves are incomplete without one more move and it shouldn't be a backup OF for when Lagares gets hurt. It should be Bryce Harper.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 While I don't share this notion, one thing about Harpy is that he's a younger free agent than most, having come up as a teenager, so not all of the usual caveats apply.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2018 Author Posted December 29, 2018 Yeah. He's a legitimate MVP candidate with an all around game and he is just now entering his prime. He's a good bet to stay at this level of production for another 7-8 years. At the end of his 10 year contract, he'd be the same age as Robinson Cano. Who we just took on for 5 years.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2019 Author Posted January 28, 2019 I'm starting to think we're not getting Harper.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 My Harper/Machado rooting interest has come down to hoping that neither one of them land in the NL East or in the Bronx. Ideally, both will sign with American League teams. Maybe they can both go to the White Sox.
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 I read an interesting take in a column comparing Harper and Machado. The source -- who was anonymous, of course, since it was a sports column -- said Machado in a 10-year deal will give you eight All-Star seasons and one MVP-caliber season. Harper will give you five All-Star seasons, three MVP-caliber seasons and two "what the @!#%^ happened?" seasons.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 I read this weekend the Padres are trying to figure out how to make a run at Machado and acquire Realmuto. The Padres.

But except for 2014 when he had the torn thumb ligament, Harper has hit 20 HR's and surpassed an .800 OPS every year. If 2016 (24 HRs, .814 OPS) counts as a WTF year, yeah, I'm on board.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 I think both those predictions sound ambitious. Entropy is a bitch.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 Mets are getting Harper right after my date with Adriana Lima.

Makes no sense. The next best hitters already signed. And how many teams are really "in" on them? 3 maybe 4 each?
