Who says the Mets have nothing this offseason? Apparently the team is tinkering with the caps worn with the black jerseys on Fridays. The NY is losing the white outline around the NY, and the orange that was treated like a drop shadow is now an outline. I think this is the treatment that was on the black caps with the blue bill. John Heyman awful. I do not understand the constant Jeter worship, and acting like Jeter not being a unanimous selection is some sort of national disgrace. There are many players, far better than Jeter, who were not unanimous selections. He's in the hall. First ballot. He won. The constant desire to put Jeter up on some pedestal is just crazy. Jeter often wasn't even the best player on his team, much less in the game. This is no scoop: We stink at Hall of Fame voting. It's not just because one numbskull voter omitted Derek Jeter from his ballot, although that was especially dumb. The real issues are bigger than that, and they aren't going away. Anyway, here's his ballot: 1. Adrian Beltre: With 3,166 hits, 477 home runs and impeccable defense, the one no-brainer on the ballot 2. Carlos Beltran: Postseason performance (1.021 OPS in 65 games) puts him over the top. I omitted him last year for the Astros cheating scandal and feel a little guilty about it. 3. Andruw Jones: One of the greatest defensive center fielders ever (10 straight Gold Gloves) also had 434 home runs. 4. Joe Mauer: Before the concussions, he was the best catcher in the game who happened to win three of the five batting titles ever won by catchers. 5. Chase Utley: Great defense, clutch hitting supersedes the lowish lifetime hit total (1,885) for a Hall of Famer. Sorry, Mets fans. 6. I saw him pitch in what I think was his Mets debut. He relieved Senga in Miami on April 3, got two strikeouts to end the sixth inning. I thought for a minute there we had something good.
