  1. Hockey's 3-on-3 overtime is amazing, and they should just make that the entire third period. right, it's different rules, but it's still the same sport, the same competition. zombie runner is only barely that. I'm all for new rules that aren't gimmicks, moving the mound, move the bases, whatever. Even banning the shift, as stupid as that is, is at least some semblance of normal. Off-sides is mostly not a thing in baseball, but it's not a foreign concept. But change for changes sake, there's no reason. It's not so much the concept or that they didn't wait until like the 13th, it's that it's so very blatantly a "Manfred hates baseball" thing that's meant to make the broadcast easier, the end of the game more memeable. Nothing to do with the game itself, or the fans or even safety, no matter what lies they tell. If ESPN found 15 innings profitable, this rule wouldn't exist.
  2. It's because it takes away the agency of the runner in play. It's not because the defense is more sophisticated. Whether the runner on first during the infield fly is safe or out is completely out of his control. If the fielder can just let the ball fall, he has to be able to get to second, which is basically impossible if it's sitting in the grass 20 feet from second base at the feet of the shortstop. The only smart play to make if the rule didn't exist would be for the runner to stay at first.

Frayed Knot wrote: The problem isn't that extra inning games take too long, it's that the game takes too long just to get to the point where you arrive at extra innings. that's not the problem either. The 'problem' is trying to do things that appeal to their customers (ESPN, Apple+TV+ whatever, Networks, etc) So the zombie runner was their hairbrained idea to come up with late season shootout drama. But in a compact time frame so it can be scheduled. It's not good baseball drama, because it induces a lot of IBBs and sacrifices and the boring stuff, but it DOES create near constant "any pitch could win the game" type TV drama. THAT is the goal. Just like the expanded playoffs are solely because they get more money for playoffs. Like this tweet: It's why the lockout ended when it did, because the players caved to MLB's fake deadline. That deadline was basically the deadline when they'd have to give money back on the yearly TV deals. That's why despite days off being part of the CBA, fiercely negotiated, they still crammed the extra games into the season when they started late. THAT is why the deadline MLB was proposing seemed so fluid, because they kept figuring "well, if we take away some off days, we still hit our TV threshold where we get the same cash"
  4. =Fman99 post_id=94901 time=1654483137 user_id=86] 4) I don't challenge the CI call in the bottom of that inning if I'm Dave Roberts. Taking the bat out of the hands of an All Star player? Dumb. Let him hit, he's got a better chance than any of the subsequent guys to plate the tying run
  5. made myself a Yaka Hula Hickey Dula to go wit hthe game..2 hours early. oopsies. [FIMG=500]http://www.ceetar.com/optimisticmetsfan/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220603_195426-scaled.jpg[/FIMG]
  6. sounds like at least 7 or 8 teams already do. so yeah, might be everywhere pretty soon.

They'll be just one of four teams to have this technology. I saw this, am intrigued. I am unconvinced a machine can replicate the delivery of a human? Is this actually delivery or just pitch repertoire? I wish someone had asked even basic follow up questions. it's probably one of the ones mentioned in this article https://www.theringer.com/mlb/2021/3/18/22337384/perfect-pitching-machine-trajekt-winmill-jeff-kensrudhttps://www.theringer.com/mlb/2021/3/18/22337384/perfect-pitching-machine-trajekt-winmill-jeff-kensrud From Trajekt (which, btw, features a quote from Hugh Quattlebaum) Pitcher delivery is projected onto the Arc™ to help batters with timing. Familiarize batters with opponent pitchers from the wind up and stretch through the integrated projection of LHP/RHP. Yeah, it's that one. Trajekt. 9. _is_ there short term catching help? Is there ANY catching help? Arguably it would've been something worth targeting in the offseason too. I do still think the Mets need another bat, probably an OF one so they rest Nimmo or whoever, especially if they're gonna cycle Canha at first sometimes. I'll need to see another game or two from Nimmo before I worry though, a few days off, and then a cross country trip. Might just need a minute to catch up. I assume Lindor is fine or we wouldn't have gotten so many injury details or Cohen making jokes about it. It's McNeil I'm a little worried about. They keep calling it "load management" and such, which seems like a cover.
  10. shake off that travel dust and crush some pitchers.
  11. I'm not sure I'd classify hiring the guy that oversaw a team riddled with drugs and a guy die under his watch because all the other candidates spurned his offers after he had to fire the sex pests as "learning".
  12. =Marshmallowmilkshake post_id=94436 time=1654183691 user_id=119] Hire baseball people for baseball jobs. Not every job running a baseball team is a baseball job. Plus, it seems to be working really well.
  13. "hey, you did that thing poorly, come over here!" "Hey, I know you're working in a completely different industry, but I definitely need you to give me 20+ more hours on a completely unrelated topic!" These aren't good processes. Hire baseball people. Hell, have a formal interview process and encourage your top choices to apply.
  14. I'd make more of a point to watch to the end if the stakes weren't so low.
  15. Edgy MD wrote: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-christie-643395123/Andrew Christie chronologically speaking, it's probably Chris that's the nepotism hire. It's not so much the straight relations i'm concerned with, it's more the cronyism. The Mets could win 10 world series in a row and having Chris Christie on the board is still a bad thing. But beyond that, the front office is littered with point72 people, and it's way too soon to say they've been monumentally influential in changing anything about this team or it's front office, particularly if they're moonlighting!
  16. he probably realized that he got swindled into "being in bed" with the precursor to the Trump family (the Wil-Katz extended families)...whereas nepotism outweighed merit in getting into decision making roles if you're worried about nepotism don't look too closely at the Mets front office.
  17. i listened to the post game after Tuesday's, because #driving but same thing, same questions, same answer. He did pivot to talking about focusing on packing, and how there would be some repeats in the suitcase.
  18. Honestly I'm not convinced if they only win 1 of those games that they won't gain ground in the division the way things are going.
  19. good players. it's 95% the players, many of who were acquired by previous* regimes. Oh, and at least some credit to Alex Anthopoulous, who's actions have made some of the depth questions here much less dire. but awards and credit aren't dolled out on June 1st.

The slow-moving game didn't help ... in addition to the challenges, and the 2 mound visits, etc, Corbin worked at a snails pace and the Mets kept getting hits. Ceetar showed up and we went looking for cocktails but I couldn't find them in the promenade. Then I slurred my way through the intro to the Podcast. That cocktail was a vodka distilled with strawberry and honeyberry, and then mixed with lemonade, so kinda radler-ish. Pretty good imo, better than hard seltzer anyway, though I do have a soft spot for lemonade. By DogfishHead. I couldn't quite suss out where all the cocktails were or weren't, but definitely CF, which was roughly as far from your seats as possible. It looks like the ruling on the runner hit by the ball is simply "put out" credited to the nearest infielder. Assumption being, I guess, that he would've been able to make a play on him. I grabbed some 'mac and cheese kegs' and snuck in to sit with my Aunt in 141 for the last few innings, then got some pizza cupcakes on my way out. I miss Citi Field, this being only my second game since late 2019. (and one concert which, meh)
