Yeah, Aaron Loup isn't irreplaceable the way Syndergaard is. Clearly Alderson thought the relievers he signed were worth that. But he's got a long history of saying things like "Was surprised at the market for that guy" when he misses out one someone they were tepidly in on. It's okay to have a rough budget, but if you don't adjust it based on the market, you're just saving money for the owner at the expense of the team and fans. (and the players note this. Labor issues incoming)

if we're gonna purely "it's all just value!" which of course, is nonsense, and there is "value" outside of the owner's balance sheet, it just means the cost for someone like Semien is simply a little larger, and if you think the cost is still worth it, it would still be on-plan, but this always misses the idea that overpaying (it's not overpaying, all players are underpaid) a little for a piece that makes a huge difference on your team is incalculable. The mountain of revenue you gain from getting over the hump and into the playoffs is so enormous that it's almost impossible to seriously say increasing your playoffs odds by a few percentage points isn't worth it.

Is Rosenthal editorializing or does he have a source for that? The idea fits in the Mets unspoken rebuild, but that doesn't make it less infuriating all around.

yes. The first was Cohen as part of a long answer where you does say he's prepared to give them what they need but also hedges a lot. The second, about the checks, was Eppler talking about signing free agents and making sure they're good decisions.

I dunno about 'enthused' but a firm "Not worried about the luxury tax cap" or some indication that they even care about 2022 would've at least stirred some hope. Instead we got "We're already at 185 million!" and "signing the front of those checks is the hardest job!" and laughing about collapsing last year.

Nothing about that press conferences enthused me. Still a wait and see if they follow through on any of their spin. Seems lilke they DON'T want to trade any of their top-100 guys, and supposedly Eppler will be 'driving' the process, but we'll see.

There's no reason to ever buy season tickets(MEMBERSHIPS!) unless you really love sitting in exactly the same spot and seeing the same faces around you. Though I guess maybe there's some resale benefit these days, I dunno, I keep dodging the sales guy's calls you wants me to come down there and talk. I don't know what 2022 brings, and I'm currently pretty frustrated with the Mes as a whole ,but Tuesday's have always been one of my favorite days to go solo.

Just speaking to the idea of getting baseball into the national conversation in November. Forcing it into an NFL halftime show makes it more prominent and tricks Fox into promoting it.

Which has nothing to do with an MVP show aired during the WS, of course. right, i said "MAKE IT PART OF THE DEAL" MLB has a deal with Fox to air the World Series. As part of that, agree to air the awards show during halftime of the 4pm game on November 21st or whatever.

Baseball already is a year-round cycle, to the extent that offseasons can be. trades, QOs, projected rosters and free agency all kick off right away. There are lulls sure, but also baseball is so regional now many non-WS teams checkout. But would a Phillies fan tune in to a World Series game or pregame and maybe stick around to see if Wheeler won? Maybe more so if they've already taken a month away from baseball? Remember, baseball's main concern is about TV and the money Networks pay for the product. Hell, tell Fox as part of the WS Deal you gotta air a 30 minutes half-time show of the MVP unveiling during a Sunday game in November.

Maybe this all played out exactly how the Mets were hoping it would play out. Maybe the Mets preferred the draft pick over Syndergaard -- years of relatively cheap controllable talent over a guy pushing 30 with oodles and oodles of questionmarks yet poised to make about $20M a year.

not to mention you're gonna ask a bunch of players who are NOT going to win an award to show up and be gracious losers. You could do it DURING the World Series? It'd certainly be better than the talking heads for a pregame show. And then you could keep the winner around for an interview during the game (provided he's not on the teams) and provide an inning or so where he's talking about like, active baseball, about pitching (or hitting) against the people playing the game live in front of him. That'd be way more interesting color than whatever Joe Buck blathers on about these days. Hell, kick Joe Buck out and give all three finalists to the award of the day the half inning, and then switch leagues. Get Burnes, Wheeler and Scherzer talking pitching to Freddy Freeman while Freeman IS BATTING.

The list of pitchers who have given the Mets more over the last three is Wheeler deGrom But, let me know the list of pitchers that give the Mets more than him in 2022, because that's what we're talking about. He didn't have some crazy shoulder surgery. He had a very common one, a minor setback, and he passed a physical and had an intensive conversation about the pitching plan medically and strategically for next year. So any 'questionable health' extent is much lesser for Syndergaard than many others. Even if he only throws half a season at career levels, he'd be around 60th of 200 starters last year in fWAR. There were 176 IL assignments to pitchers in 2021. Which one of those guys do you think is less questionable? and good enough?

There aren't. There are few pitchers better than Syndergaard, and BREAKING, they're all pitchers so they all have questionable health. Would you rather the guy that just had the Tommy John, or the one that hasn't yet?
