  1. Edgy MD wrote: Yesterday's report had a scout calling him the best outfielder in the division. Not that we want to carry a bat that's utterly unready, or hamper any possible development he's got left by putting him in a position to fail, but a superior defender in the middle could help mask a lot of defensive flaws in the team's lineup. I think it's possible if Duda is actually mashing (and hopefully meaning the offense is looking okay as a whole) but still looking significantly negative defensively you'd be more likely to see MdD. or hell, he's a great 25th man in the playoffs, defensive replacement/pinch runner guy.
  2. pasting my email here, I think I'm missing someone's email in my list. REMINDER: Draft is Wednesday night at 8:30. I'll send out a reminder email at 8:25 if everyone is not there, and we'll wait a couple of minutes if someone's running late. I did a draft Saturday that took 2-3 hours, it seems like we have about as many roster spots left here as well. Thoughts: Glance at your roster once or twice before the draft to figure out which positions you're targeting, which may help with deciding who to nominate for auction. Pay attention to the injury wire too. (Zack Grienke is headed to the doctor) Also keep an eye for players with the same name. I know there's a scrub Jose Bautista out there, make sure you're nominating the right guy.

    Oscars 2013

I enjoyed MacFarlane. Helped entertain me for what's otherwise usually a pretty boring 4 hours. (The wife had it on, otherwise I wouldn't have watched)
  4. March 7th at 8:41 maybe?
  5. Yeah, I guess this is the time of year I'd steer more towards lesser "big name" movies that seem like filler. snapped this from a Time Out New York for you guys. I want to see World War Z and Man of Steel. I've loved the Wright-Pegg-Frost team so obviously I'm going to see The World's End. (although what's different than Shaun of the Dead here?) I'll respect my nerddom by seeing Star Trek, though I'm not much of a trekkie. Spring Breakers had me at bikini-clad coeds, but I doubt I'm going to make a special effort to see it. There's a curiosity to see how they did Gatsby, but much like Spring Breakers I probably won't. I didn't like the first Anchorman, so..
  6. Frayed Knot wrote: I've seen very few movies so far in February. The problem with those released at this time of year is that they often suck almost be definition. Released too late to be eligible for the 2012 Oscars, not thought worthy enough to save for the summer season, and so early in 2013 that they'll be forgotten by the time the next award season comes around. February movies are the rough equivalent of new TV shows which are slated immediately for Friday nights; you know the studio has little or no faith in it. There's some truth to this, but just because the studio has no faith in it (or the Oscar voters, screw them) doesn't mean you can't get good stuff. Isn't this exactly the time for studios to be taking chances on what could be the next big writer/director/etc?

  9. I think we did a weeknight at 9ish last time. Is that still best for everyone, or would a weekend evening work better? earlier on a weeknight? Something like Tuesday March 12th at 8pm? Some of you still need to release guys..or at least, should. Snukes is down to 12 players, but no one else has less than 19. Most will probably be drafting 10-15 players, so hopefully it doesn't take more than a couple of hours.
  10. smg58 wrote: Are you looking for anything in particular? Mike Trouts. I seem to lack quality middle infielders. Could always use more pitching. I might be able to float all that money on two players, but it seems smart to explore value for one of them.
  11. Listening to reasonable offers for Verlander or Wright, Don't know if I want two players making that much on my team.

  13. Still haven't seen this yet, but was forwarded a link to this article earlier in the week. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Masterclass in Why HFR fails, and a reaffirmation of what makes cinema magical Long article, and very interesting, but didn't answer one question to me. A lot of 'what makes things cinematic' is simply because it's what we're used to. Perhaps after we get more ingrained to HFR.. Are our brains conditioning to watching movies a certain way?
  14. my wife wants to see this, so i'll probably suffer through it. Doubt I'll enjoy it, the only good musical I've ever seen was South Park.
  15. In general I'm a sucker for a film that takes place, and is filmed, in New York.
  16. I'm on this Nielsen list that occasionally gets me into free screeners (like Django a couple of weeks early) in this case it was _way_ early. just checked my mail, I saw this movie on April 12th, 2011. yikes. I wonder why it took so long to come out. It wasn't completely polished for instance (the cut scenes where he analyzes routes through intersections were very basic) but it looked pretty close. I definitely need to watch this again, I wonder if I'll remember what's different.
  17. been over a year since I saw this, but I did enjoy it. High speed bike chases aren't the usual medium for high speed chases and high speed chases are awesome. there. Just enough hi-jinks to keep me entertained between chases.
  18. I wanted to see at least twice as many and just never got to them. I will. in order: Django Unchained The Hunger Games Wreck-It Ralph The Avengers Premium Rush Ted 21 Jump Street Bourne Legacy (I think..) Alex Cross Anna Karenina

    TED

I went 2.5. saw it..sometime during this weekend. Was basically a romantic comedy though, without the overwhelmingly cheesy/sappy crap. (yes, the movie with the talking teddy bear was a more realistic version of a love story) Ted stands in for whichever plot point would be used to indicate the guy's lack of commitment, just Mila Kunis is just looking for equal footing rather than replacing his previous life.
  20. I want to see Skyfall but somehow I keep..not seeing it. I haven't really sat down and watched one of the pre-Brosnan films more than just the occasion couple of minutes here and there in flipping though. I've always enjoyed the flashy over the top explosions and chases and gadgets, but I guess that won't quite translate across decades. I have been listening to some of the audiobooks of the original books. Those are still fairly interesting, although I found Moonraker to be a little slow to build to anything interesting.
  21. SERIOUSLY, go watch Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction over the holidays. You'll thank me. I'll see this then, myself. downloading inglorious basterds right now. but yeah, I will. edit: I realize now that i downloaded basterds and pulp fiction in blu ray..and my stupid computer has ceased being visible to the Playstation to play them. grr. argh.

  23. The D is silent. Set in the South two years before the Civil War, Django Unchained stars Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago. Django and Schultz's search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of "Candyland," an infamous plantation. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), Candie's trusted house slave. -- (C) Weinstein This movie was awesome, while being pretty predictable. I mean, Tarantino writes a western is pretty much exactly what you would expect. Bloodshed, ridiculous situations, fun cinematics, more bloodshed.. and well acted too. The main thing that drives the story is Django's quest to find his wife, who was sold to a different plantation than him. He hooks up with Schultz, the bounty hunter, and you get all sorts of hijinks as they collect on wanted posters and then it almost transitions to a James Bondesque mission to rescue Broomhilda, Django's wife. The only thing I'd say is that while DiCaprio and Jackson do a great job in their roles, both of them are really just incidentals in that except for one snag near the end, neither of their actions really drive the story and I think that takes away from their performance a bit. But the movie was great. really enjoyable. The soundtrack too, also typical Tarantino imo. Probably the best movie I've seen all year.

  25. Video Game Nostalgia? What could be better? Takes place in an arcade. Arcades are awesome. John C. Reilly as Wreck-It Ralph, the villain of Fix-It Felix, Jr. Sarah Silverman as Vanellope von Schweetz, a 9-year-old racer and glitch in Sugar Rush. Jack McBrayer as Fix-It Felix, Jr., the hero of Fix-It Felix, Jr. Jane Lynch as Sergeant Tamora Jean Calhoun, the lead character of Hero's Duty. Alan Tudyk as King Candy Ralph is the bad guy from the game Fix-It Felix, Jr. and is feeling unloved. Felix wins the medal every day for being a hero and no one likes Ralph, the guy that wrecks everything. When he discovers the cast of the game celebrating 30 years without him, he sets out on a quest to win a medal in some other game to prove he can be a hero too. Hi-Jinx ensue, and most of the game takes place in Sugar Rush, a kart racing game. where he meets Vanellope von Schweetz, a glitch in the game that wants to become a 'real racer' and they clash and bond as they both chase their goals. It was a fun movie, with all sorts of old game nostalgia. Sure, most of the plot was what you'd expect in a PG movie, but it had plenty of touching moments as Vanellope tries to become a real part of the game and Ralph is torn between his quest to get his medal to prove he's a hero and doing what a real hero would do and help Vanellope. there are a billion video game references from old games. The bad guy enters the Konami Code on an NES controller at one point. Q*Bert features as a homeless hero, his game having been turned off. Pac-Man ghosts, Bowser, Doctor Eggman..etc. I enjoyed it. It wasn't deep or complicated or anything, but it doesn't have to be, it's an 8-bit adventure!
