  1. I still don't like Diaz, but I like insurance runs.
  2. Tom Glavine, your 2005 NL Cy Young winner.

  4. I saw this comment while looking at Graves' profile this morning. Admittedly, it's an old comment, but I wonder if it's something he still hasn't corrected:LATEST NEWS Danny Graves allowed three earned runs and four hits in one inning of work in his second appearance for the Mets on Thursday at Oakland. (Updated 06/16/2005). FANTASY ANALYSIS Upon signing with the Mets, Graves had been informed by his teammates that he was tipping his pitches. Apparently, the veteran has yet to rectify that situation.
  5. Hey, I was going to post a Ducks thread tonight. Just got back from Citibank Park in beautiful Central Islip (motto: "We're Not The 'Hood Any More") after seeing some nice Ducks pitching take care of their arch-rivals, the Bridgeport Bluefish, 3-1.Game Notes:Wow, This Guy Sucks: Bluefish starter Tim Cain entered the game 1-9 with an ERA over 6. He promptly gave up a walk, infield single (should have been an error on the pitcher), walk, walk, walk, sac fly, fielder's choice -- and without the ball leaving the infield, the Ducks had plated three. Not Too Many Dashes on the Scorecard: The Bluefish infielders had as many assists -- two -- as both their outfielders and their catcher: Ducks catcher Steve Torrealba was thrown out at the plate by RF Chris Latham in the second, and Pete Rose Jr. ("That guy? He's Pete Rose's son.") was thrown out by CF Jamie Gann in the fourth, and catcher Hector Kuilan threw out two Ducks trying to steal. Everything else was a fly ball or a K or a groundout to first base. Weird.Making Charlie O Look Like Nook Logan: Bluefish catcher Hector Kuilan -- a shorter, fatter Ramon Castro -- hit four balls VERY hard, but had only a double, single, and two loooooong flyouts to show for it. He's also the slowest man I've ever seen, and his four-hop throw on a Pete Rose Jr. SB attempt led to Rose's first stolen base since July 2003.Hey! I Know That Guy! Managing the Bluefish is longtime Pirates 2B Chico Lind. Also manning the coaching boxes is former catcher Terry "Don't Call Me Fred" McGriff. Former Brewers reliever Angel Miranda pitched two innings of solid relief tonight for the Fish, who also have former Met Robert Person, former Pirate OF Will Pennyfeather, and former Oriole 3B Willis Otanez on the roster.Hey! I Know That Guy II! Besides Buddy Harrelson, co-owner and bench coach, former Met Kevin Baez mans the third-base coach's box. Pedro Borbon Jr. is on the pitching staff, along with former major leaguers Lance Davis and Mike Crudale, who picked up his first save tonight. 41-year-old former A's 1B Doug Jennings is a longtime Duck who retired to coach this year, but is apparently back on the active roster, because he started in left field tonight. The aforementioned Pete Rose plays first and third, newly-signed Armando Rios joins fellow former MLer Henry Rodriguez in the outfield.Blue Point Beer PotG:SP Luis Arroyo 3RP Tony Runion 1RP Mike Crudale 1CF Armando Rios 11B Henry Rodriguez 13B Donny Leon 1LF Doug Jennings 1RF Jason Johnson 0.5SS Juan Lorenzo 0.5The Atlantic League is a good time. A lot of ex-major leaguers fill the rosters, along with a bunch of guys who will never be quite good enough to make it. The games tend to run long -- almost never less than three hours, I think -- because the pitching is pretty spotty, especially the middle relief.FWIW, the Patriots are a playoff team this year, having won the first-half title. They're managed by Sparky Lyle, and the roster includes former Mariners prospect Ryan Radmanovich, D-Rays pitcher Nick Bierbrodt, and Graig Nettles' son Jeff. Outfielder Jeremy Owens has 21 homers and 26 steals, so that's pretty impressive.(If you're going to go, go Wednesday night to see the Zooperstars. They're freaking hysterical.)

  7. Why does Dontrelle Willis torture us so?Happy Birthday Annie!
  8. I think it's generally assumed that the fiery guys (BV, Tony Pena, Lou Piniella) "work better with younger players, because they motivate them," and calmer guys (Torre, Dusty Baker) are better with veterans because they "just let them play."I think the whole thing is bunk.
  9. Nymr, I forgot to thank you... I'm honored to have been quoted in your sig.
  10. Agreed. I'd take Bellhorn for the rest of the year... for a guy who strikes out a lot, he really knows how to get on base.On Matsui - I think once you try to put someone through waivers, that's it. You can't do it again this year. Maybe they'll take Glavine if we throw in some money?
  11. Who the hell has the flu for a week in August? Come on, Doug. Come clean with the syphillis or whatever.
  12. Valadius wrote:I want Diaz playing wherever he can do the least damage with his glove.I believe JD has a spot on his slow-pitch softball team.
  13. In any event, Seaver's an ass on the air.
  14. My allegiance is to this club, not to ex-members of the fraternity. I loved listening to Tim McCarver when I was a kid, but I didn't watch MFY games because he was broadcasting them. I don't watch games that Al Leiter pitches, regardless of who he's pitching for.So I'd say no.
  15. Well, Mr. Koo... we'll always have this:

  17. How sick has this bench been this year? They've made Willie look great:Marlon Anderson 17-40 (.425), 1 HR, 6 RBI, 6 BB, 8 RJose Offerman (*) 8-27 (.296), 1 HR, 6 RBIMiguel Cairo 5-10 (.500), 1 RBIChris Woodward 4-8 (.500), 1 HR, 3 RBIPlus:Three PHs each from Valent & MatsuiIce is 2-7 with 2 runs scoredDaubach had a pinch-hit homer and a double in six ABsPiazza has a two-run double in three ABsCastro is 1-1 with an RBI double(*) I'm not 100% sure on Offerman's stats... I did a quick count from his game-by-game log since he got called up from games where he had one at-bat. Not all of those might have been PH appearances.TEAM TOTALS: 47-140, .336 avg (1st in ML), .394 obp (4th), .443 slg (5th), .836 ops (5th). Not much on XBH (3 doubles, 4 HR), but they're definitely hitting.I don't remember recent times when I've had as much confidence in this bench as a whole. In late innings, I look forward to these guys coming to the plate, because I know something exciting is going to happen. I don't want Woodward in right field every day, or Marlon Anderson standing at first base, but I love having these guys in reserve, ready to go.
  18. I don't want to see Diaz out there every day, but I don't know that we have much of an alternative.
  19. Martinez 4Castro 1Reyes 1.5Wright 1Williams 0.5Woodward 2
  20. This was a great IGT. Thank you all so much.Looper was crap last night; he wasn't even hitting 89 on the WPIX gun, and if he's not throwing harder, he's throwing meatballs. You had to know he was going to give up hits... I was just hoping they would be hit right at someone.I'll say what I've said all year; I don't trust Diaz at ALL. With his glove, with his bat, with anything.
  21. If this movie was out when I was in college, I would have seen it seven million times by now. We finally saw it last night; hysterical.
  22. We laff, and we laff, and we laff... and we try to figure out how to split up only ten Schaefer points.
  23. What view is better, Doc? #1 or #2?
  24. Okay, so we already kinda know these guys, because we played 'em last night while I was sleeping on the job. (Actually, I was working on the job, which is why I forgot to do it.)So here's what we know about the last two games of this series:The Nats are finishing a two-week, four-city road trip this weekend. Are they tired? Getting memories of being the wandering minstrels of 2004? Perhaps, as the bats looked sleepy last night against 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner Jae Seo.Some quick thoughts on the Nats:** Closer Chad Cordero has 39 saves, which leads the NL.** Jose Guillen has 21 home runs on the season, only one of which has come at home.** Who is this guy? The Nationals have used 49 players this season, more than any other MLB team.Tonight: Livan Hernandez (14-5, 3.45) vs Pedro Martinez (12-5, 2.96), which is a great reason to bring your dog to the picnic area for Snausages Dog Day at the Park. Livan is a workhorse's workhorse, as he leads the majors in pitches thrown in '05. He's third in IP and first in hits allowed; expect a nice day of rest for Frank Robinson's bullpen. In his career at Shea, he's 5-3, 3.40. He's 2-1, 3.68 in three starts this year, including giving up five runs in seven innings in a losing effort on July 6 in DC.Sunday: Esteban Loaiza (7-9, 3.64) vs Kris "Tin" Benson (9-4, 3.49). What better way to celebrate Jewish Heritage Day at Shea! Loaiza gives you the same thing every night out: six innings (all but five of his starts this year), three runs (all but ten of his starts), good control (1-2 walks/game), and a handful of Ks.Ex-Mets:IF Carlos BaergaC Gary BennettOF Preston Wilson (kinda)RP Hector Carrasco (drafted by the Mets in '88)RP Mike StantonEx-Pos:OF Cliff Floyd
