  2. I didn't think it was THAT good, fellas. Nowhere near up to Wally's standards. But I'm honored to have fooled you all.
  3. Stunning, Wally Matthews. Just stunning. MLB Misses A Golden Opportunity To Honor Two Legends When Joe Girardi left Alex Rodriguez on the bench in the ninth inning with a chance to win the game, many American League fans were incensed that he would willingly squander the team's best chance for a win. But it shouldn't have mattered; Bud Selig should have done the right thing and awarded home field advantage to the American League this year. Sure, Mets fans and Cardinals fans and whatever Braves fans there are may quibble, but this year, of all years, it's fitting to honor the legacy left by two legendary baseball men who left us this week -- Bob Sheppard and George Steinbrenner -- by ensuring that if the Yankees do their part and win the American League, the 2010 World Series kicks off in Yankee Stadium. Bob Sheppard announced more World Series games than anyone; by shorting the American League one potential home game, Bud Selig has robbed us of the opportunity to hear his prerecorded dulcet tones, like a voice from the beyond, echoing through the hallowed halls of Monument Park one more time. And to insist that the glorious Yankee Stadium -- home to more World Series games than any other park in the history of baseball -- host three potentially meaningless middle-of-the-Series games is an insult to baseball history. The deaths of Bob Sheppard this weekend and George Steinbrenner early yesterday morning left a hole in the heart of baseball. The short video tribute and accompanying moment of silence before last night's game was the least baseball could do for a man who gave every ounce of his being to the game, a man who wanted to win more than anyone, and wasn't afraid to make his own rules to make that happen. Bud Selig has a chance to rectify that mistake... but needs to make that decision before it's too late.
  4. Vaguely Metly content alert: Andre Ethier is the first Dodger OF elected to start since Straw (DNP) in 1991.

Tim and Joe keep trying to manufacture "these guys never see each other" drama, but it's not working. To an extent. But there's still something kool about seeing all those different uniforms on one field. True. I can't believe they allowed Derek Jeter to strike out looking. DON'T THEY REALIZE HE'S IN MOURNING?

  7. Steinbrenner tribute. Girardi crying.
  8. Did the Mets get hosed on the "All-Stars Among Us"? I didn't see a Mets logo during the flipbook intro, and I didn't see a jersey out there either. For the record: Biggest ovation during intros: Scioscia and Vlad Guerrero Biggest boos: Anyone wearing a Yankees or Red Sox uniform

Hey, I went to that game, in Philly. Whose got a lear jet? I need a flight to the west coast, asap. You're like the G-Fafif of All-Star Games.
  10. I would love to add something witty, but I have little regard for Steinbrenner. From what I've read, he was a jerk who was completely undeserving of all the love he's going to get over the next couple of days.

  12. Oh, and this. Legend, yes, but thanks to Topps and their "Fan Favorites" set a few years back, this is my endearing image of Mr. Sheppard.
  13. Had a little mention of Sheppard's death before the game today at the stadium. Nice touch.
  14. My friend, an erstwhile Mets fan, says Francoeur is her favorite Met because (in her words) "he looks like he needs someone to root for him."
  15. Met up with Willets at the apple before the game, watched a little Braves BP from our excellent seats in left field. Sun was a little much; took until the eighth for the shade to reach us. At that point, though, the weather was glorious; I was ready for twelve more innings once it got cool. Thanks to Willets for the tix and for hooking me up with an extra layer of sunscreen. Technically 1-1 on the year now, with five drizzle-soaked innings of a Nationals loss in May sullying my record. Actually, the last Mets W I have in my scorebook is the 1986 reunion game from August 2006. (I must have used a different scorebook, though, because I can't imagine going two full years without going to a game. I know MiniWolf was just born, but I'm sure I must have hit a game or two somewhere between August 2006 and the ten-inning Cubs loss in the last week at Shea.) Either way, a nice win, nice company, nice seats, etc. Headed back courtesy of the DiamondKnights in two weeks, then meeting my college roommate in August. Knew a bunch of other folks at the park as per tweets and FB posts, but never wound up catching up with anyone else, including Greg. Smaller than Shea, yes, but it's still a pretty big place.
  16. But which Randy Johnson? There were so many.
  17. Down to St. Lucie, as the Bisons are on their All-Star Break.
  18. Or Justin Turner. Whatever.
  19. I like how Yankee fans talked about Montero as the second coming of Yogi/Thurman/Posada/Wynegar all in one guy for months, but now as soon as he's being dealt, he's a replaceable spare part.

Once you're authorized, do you have to be physically present at the library to access the database, or can you access it from a remote location --- like your home, for example? Most of the online databases have in-library and at-home options on the Web.

But the commissioner MUST step in and not allow this. The best third baseman, the best shortstop, the best second baseman, the best first baseman, the best catcher, the best feisty backup catcher, the best closer, the best fat middle reliever, the best young starter, the best left-handed starter (old guy division), the best left-handed starter (fat guy division), and now the best left-handed starter (young guy division)? Bud needs to put a stop to this.

It'd be ridiculously easy to have a camera in the outfield, a guy in the clubhouse watching it, and a really tiny speaker embedded in a cap, or a helmet, or a color, or an earring/necklace. "Hey Chase, slider in the dirt, lay off" For that matter, think about how easy it would be to put hidden mics in the visitors dugout and bullpen. The cynic in me says I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't already happen, honestly.

  24. I know Wiggy's stat line is impressive, BUT... since May 23: 38 games 26 for 135 (.193) OBP .306 SLG .252 1 HR
