  1. I did a quick checklist analysis in the old baseball card thread when the set was first announced over the winter; most of the Mets in this year's set have corresponding card numbers with their Mets counterparts in the 1962 set. Cannizzaro and Thole are both card #26, Stengel and Collins are both #29, etc. Classy but subtle move by Topps.
  2. I actually thought the Castillo acquisition and signing was a solid move at the time, from a cultural perspective. I distinctly remember stories that Castillo and Santana were close in Minnesota, and I thought that was a nice idea to help keep your ace happy.

  4. Two replies in and we're already not following the rules. You're out of your element, Johnny.
  5. Spent 2009 in Japan, apparently, then signed with the Nats in 2010; was named "Top Star" (MVP) of the AAA All-Star Game last year. Signed with the Twins this off-season; will likely spend some time in Rochester, and that ain't a bad place to be. How about LOOGY-who-never-was Blake McGinley?
  6. Bought it on iTunes. To the top of charts with you!
  7. Completely agree on Piazza 2000, but Wright's 2007 was better than HoJo's '89 by any metric.
  8. That's why we call him "The Franchise." Duh.
  9. Stan's in the discussion, but really... it's Willie.
  10. It's stunning that nobody's heard this until now.
  11. Terrifying. I wish him all the best. Accidents like this are going to happen with balls traveling as quickly as they do. I bet fan injuries, especially in the lower decks, happen a lot more than we hear about too.

  13. Charbonneau was the guy I thought before I even opened the thread. I remember as a kid collecting cards in 1983 picking up a 1981 Charbonneau card and being unable to figure out why I'd never heard of him when he was obviously such an incredible ballplayer.
  14. That would be StevieJeets. Humblest apologies for being one of the first to jump in and one of the last to jump out. Got committed to the local parade with the wife and friends.
  15. Plus you've won a fuckin' World Series since then. Really, get over the JD Drew thing.

  17. Looks like the shirt says "Lutz," so I'm assuming it's him. Who's the guy next to Wright? Capuano? And what does Dickey's shirt say? It's not "Dickey," because there's no "y" at the end. There's a top secret nickname there that we're going to need to know. Someone get Tracksuit on it.
  18. /shakes head sadly http://deadspin.com/#!5780992 Peter Abrahams of the Boston Globe picked up on a curious editor's note in the Philadelphia Inquirer on March 6. It read: In Saturday's "High & Inside" column, The Inquirer made a regretful attempt at humor in a reference to Boston Red Sox outfielder J.D. Drew's coming to Philadelphia to play against the Phillies in June. The sentence, "Get your D-cells ready," should have been edited out of the story. Any reference to throwing batteries at a player is neither funny nor acceptable. The offending column, written by T.J. Furman, was subtitled "Show your love for J.D. Drew, Philly," and the call to arms was a reference to an August 1999 game between the Phillies and the Cardinals. Drew had turned down Philadelphia's advances to instead in Furman's words "slum it in St. Paul, Minn.," with the help of his agent, Scott Boras. In his big league debut at Veterans Stadium, he was so poorly received by bitter Phillies fans that the umpires suspended play to clear debris from the field. The AP commended Drew for surviving "having large batteries thrown at him from the stands." Furman brought this history to surface on Saturday when he reminded Philadelphia fans that this season might be their last to welcome Drew to the City of Brotherly Love. Thanks to Abrahams, here's the original column: Sorry to say this, Phils fans, but whenever Drew hangs up his cleats, he will have had a productive, if unspectacular, career. But fear not: You'll get one more chance to let J.D. know how you feel about him when the Sox come to town June 28-30. Get your D-cells ready. Abrahams writes that at best, the aside was "in poor taste. At worst, it's encouraging assault." With a battery, twelve seasons after the offense. We propose that baseball fans allow Drew to play what may be his final season without having to duck toxic projectiles on his way to the batter's box. It just seems fair.
  19. Maybe if he DID, this team wouldn't have sucked last year.
  20. Funny. Santana/Pelfrey isn't on that list, therefore the whole thing is invalidated. Please see that it is.
  21. I read that the Mets originally made some sort of agreement to use the DH as an attempt to get Beltran more ABs, but I might be misremembering that.
  22. Thought we already had a Bobby V thread.
  23. I can't think of Sue Simmons without thinking of the FoW line from "Traffic & Weather": Chuck Scarborough turns to Sue Simmons Says sugar you don't know what you're missin' Oooh we belong together Like traffic and weather Like traffic and weather FLMeYrZoqpE

  25. That kept getting better and better. (The Al Davis photo is terrifying.)
