  1. And apparently none of y'all saw the Willie Harris play to save a run in the fourth, or Beltran going flat-out and then hopping up to double up Infante and save a run in the fifth. Either (or both) of those would have made everything else moot.
  2. Pelfrey 4 Harris 2 Beltran 2 O'Connor 1 Niese 0.5
  3. I think it's a little of both, and I wonder about that, especially in crucial situations like last night. I don't know nothing from nothing, but does Igarashi understand enough English when Warthen comes out there to say "THIS IS THE FUCKING PITCHER JUST THROW SOME FUCKING STRIKES AND CUT IT WITH THE NIBBLY SHIT"? I don't know.
  4. Cold as hell. Going to get six more burgers to warm up.
  5. Mex is closed tonight. Shake Shack instead. I could have eaten like six of those things. Sec 137 in LF if anyone's looking for me.
  6. Just got in. Looks like they'll play, but we'll see. Where is the Keith Hernandez burger?
  7. Good thing I'm already on a train on my way there. Shit.
  8. Just two against the Marlins, so we'll make this easy. Plus I just stumbled across tickets for tonight, so I think I might wind up at the game. Tonight, an opening day rematch as Josh Johnson (3-1, 1.63 on the season, 22-0, 0.86 career against the Mets) takes on Mike Pelfrey (3-3, 5.74 on the season, 0-22, 8.60 career against Florida). Johnson and the Fish won the opener in Miami, but perhaps a change of venue will benefit Big Pelf; hope he doesn't mind a little rain also. Johnson leads the majors in BAA (.168), and in his four starts with five days' rest is 2-0, 0.33 (one run in 27 1/3 innings). Full Disclosure: I obviously made up those career records, but... this is the fifth time Johnson and Pelfrey have faced off. Johnson is 4-0, 3.76 in those games, while Pelf is 0-4, 10.13. So... yeah. Tomorrow night, Ricky Nolasco (3-0, 3.02) faces Hawk Niese (2-4, 5.03). Nolasco is 5-6, 5.26 career against the Mets, but that's skewed by four awful appearances his rookie year. (Since 2007, he's 5-3, 3.93.) Bullpenners: LHPs Randy Choate and Mike Dunn, RHPs Burke Badenhop, Edward Mujica, Brian Sanches, and Ryan Webb. RHP Leo Nunez is the closer, leading the majors with 14 saves (in 14 chances). Who's Hot: Logan Morrison (@lomomarlins) returned from the DL Friday and hit three home runs over the weekend. He has a 13-game hitting streak going. Who's Not: Nobody, really. Javy Vazquez got lit up again yesterday, but that doesn't matter. Lineup: 1B Gaby Sanchez -- I always think this guy was once a Met minor leaguer, but he isn't. I'm conflating him with Gaby Hernandez. Sanchez, however, is lighting up the league: 5th in OPS, 8th in hits, 7th in total bases, etc. Walk him. 2B Omar Infante -- Remember how he made the All-Star Team last year? What bullshit. Sucks this year; .551 OPS. 3B is sort of a revolving cast for Florida; Greg Dobbs is their most usual 3B, but he's really more of a pinch-hitting specialist. SS Hanley Ramirez -- Everything we wish Jose Reyes was, except I think he's kind of a dick. LF Logan Morrison -- Emilio Bonifacio has been getting a lot of time while LoMo was out, but he's back. CF Chris Coghlan -- Somehow won the ROY Award in 2009. RF Mike Stanton -- We're going to see a whole lot of him in the next couple of years; huge bat. C John Buck -- Signed a three-year, $18 million deal this offseason after a career year in 2010. Couldn't walk if you spotted him three balls. Other guys to worry about: Nobody of significance. Wes Helms is on the bench, but he's almost as old as me. Osvaldo Martinez is a backup infielder, and Scott Cousins is their backup OF. Bonifacio is a utility guy, and their backup catcher is a guy named Brett Hayes. The Future: RHP Tom Koehler (Stony Brook '08) is pitching lights-out with the Zephyrs; he's 4-0, 2.66 in seven starts, plus he has a card in the new Bowman set that comes out this week, so I'm pretty excited. Really want to see him get some big league starts this year, because that will likely mean that one of the Fish's regular starters is hurt.
  9. Thinking about Beltran and Pelf and K-Rod... wouldn't any combination of those three guys be awfully appealing across town?

  11. Ceetar wrote: Mets are 106-172 @Houston. 2-2 there last year. This says Dillon Gee is 0-0 0ERA against the Astros, but 02 2.37 at Minute Maid, which must be a typo. He played them on JCL's fantasy team.
  12. TransMonk wrote: Thole back up in the two-hole. I wonder what that's all about. It's in case Turner sucks and they have to double-switch Thole to second base.
  13. One of the forgotten baseball greats, methinks, because of when/where he played. Kinda overshadowed by everybody. I never immediately think of him when I think of the Greats, but he's in the discussion.
  14. That's why we do the KTE.
  15. Closer Mark Melancon is a Yankee reject who was traded for Lance Berkman; as a Berkman fan, I've deleted all memory of his pinstriped career from my mind. Melancon is also Batman, so he's got that going for him if this baseball thing doesn't work out.
  16. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=bell--001bil No relation to the Gus-Buddy-Jay-Heath-Derek family.

Clint Barmes is the 'Stros SS, which surprises me because I thought he was still in Colorado. So, apparently, does a Google Image Search. 7-for-36 since coming back from a hand injury. 14-for-100 career against Mets pitching, so something tells me he'll break out this weekend. (Looks like attgig beat me on this, but I'm posting it anyway.)
  18. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Bill Hall is the regular second baseman. One of those guys who's still starting for a shitty team but might be better as a "young veteran" reserve for a good team. Bill Hall is a terrible major leaguer who's coasting on the fact that he had that incredible 2005 where he hit like 35 home runs.
  19. Anyone who's player-stalking will be kindly requested to request autographs from guys I need for me.
  20. metirish wrote: To the best of our knowledge there is nothing worth stealing for the new guy. "Yeah, I got this... uh... Scott Hairston jersey? No, it's not game used, because he doesn't play all that much."
  21. Benjamin Grimm wrote: He probably spoke to him in Street Spanish. This just made me spit taco out my nose.
  22. Cohen: "Those dipwads are going to trade away all their marquee names. Eff 'em."
  23. Oh, of course we will, eventually. But I'm also saying it's not a coincidence that the most significant attendance drops in Mets history have come after the Seaver trade and Straw signing with LA.
  24. Darryl's the parallel, but that was different because he left on his own terms and we were free to hate him at that point; plus he became a colossal screwup. I don't see that from Reyes; plus, if they trade him, it's literally spitting in the face of your fan base, from whom you've made millions of dollars selling REYES 7 memorabilia. You trade Reyes, you eff an ENORMOUS chunk of your fan base; I don't care who you're bringing back. You will lose a lot of people. Beltran is not the same; as much as we all love Carlos, he's always been a hired gun; he's not OUR GUY the way Reyes and Wright are (and Ike could be). People will be upset if he's dealt, but we'll move on. Same for Santana, honestly, if he comes back healthy and they decide to move him. Nobody likes Frankie, so he can go.
  25. G-Fafif wrote: seawolf17 wrote: I would like to again state for the record that I will be despondent if Reyes or Wright is a productive major leaguer wearing a uniform other than a Mets one. What is Reyes...Getting Worried? Argh.
