  1. I think JCL is right. Except for the criminal assault, I think Frankie did what we asked him to do. Much fonder memories of him on the field than I had of any other recent closer.
  2. That guy is such a showoff.

  4. metirish wrote: WHY IS INJURED REYES SHOWING UP TO ALL-STAR GAME? In a totally selfish move the clearly injured Reyes is here in AZ, what are his motives? , what I'm trying to say is that Jeter would never have pulled such a move.......... Close -- Wally. SELFISH REYES HAS ONE FOOT OUT THE DOOR Phoenix (AP) -- It's like they don't get it, these Mets. Jose Reyes, on the disabled list yet again with an injured hamstring, is spending his All-Star break here in Arizona, gobbling up ground balls and whacking batting-practice line drives all over Chase Field. "We'd certainly like Jose to take some time off and recover," general manager Sandy Alderson said. "But this is a special honor for him and for our organization, so we're not going to begrudge him the opportunity to get out there and be a part of history." Reyes, of course, carried the Mets in the first half -- offensively, defensively, spiritually -- and if they intend to mount any sort of misguided run at the class of the National League, then they're going to need him back at the top of the lineup, doing what he does best. But rather than resting the hammy, he's running with abandon around Chase Field, laughing and joking and making friends. Seven of the Mets' first ten games after the break are against division foes, the Phillies and Marlins, and the three in the middle are against the Cardinals, who are leading the NL Central. If he's as healthy as he appears to be, then wouldn't you think that the most important thing would be to have him ready to go for those games? But the Mets, rather than asking Jose to stay home, will let him have all the time he needs. "He should be back in time for the Cincinnati-Washington trip," Alderson added. "We don't want to put any undue pressure on him." You'd never catch his crosstown counterpart, Derek Jeter, pulling that move; Jeter, in fact, is spending the break relaxing at home, continuing to recover from his recent DL stint and basking in the heavenly glow that he earned with his 3000th hit on Saturday. He knows that being there for his team for the pennant race, grounding out weakly to second base in big spots four times a night, is the most important thing. That's why he's got five World Series rings. And that's what Jose wants too. "I know there's a possibility I might not be in New York much longer," Reyes said during yesterday's All-Star Media Day. "I want to be able to show myself off to any potential future teammates, show them that I can still hit and run, that the hamstring isn't an issue."

  7. I could get into some of this [starling Marte] is built in the mold of Darryl Strawberry, a sleek, athletic 6 feet 2, 179 pounds. He has the speed and grace of an Omar Moreno, the kind seldom seen with that size. He already can cover as much of center field -- maybe even more -- than Andrew McCutchen. And his arm, already the Pirates' best at any level among outfielders ... well, no need to go there. 10. "Presenting The Worlds Dick-Suckingest Derek Jeter Column" http://deadspin.com/5819946/ "Now no one will EVER talk about Derek Jeter being really old and not being able to hit anymore, even once he gets really old and can't anymore, which is pretty much now, spare for a few anomalous instances."
  11. "Spaceballs" was on TV last night. What a great film. I love the stars, and I love the idea of having them be cumulative on the uniform sleeve. That'd be really neat.

  15. HOF manager Dick Williams, 82.
  16. And some of those guys (Carp, Bautista) weren't *technically* Mets.

But Jeter has known only one way his entire career, and you have to admire his seemingly unwavering belief in that way, no matter the numbers. You really do have to admire Jeter, for scrapping something that would make him good, and having the intangiables to remain being bad. Seriously! That's awesomely bad writing.

  19. Please. Three days in New Jersey and I was ready to drive through a wall. (Which I thought I would actually have to do in order to make a u-turn at one point.) Smithtown is just inside Suffolk county; right around the middle of the Island. Biggio coached at my baseball camp when I was a kid. Always been something of a cult hero to me.
  20. Condolences to Mr. Baldwin and his family. (Checking my list -- there's another guy I need for my auto collection that ain't gonna happen. Argh.)

  22. No, that's a picture of me in a Mets uniform. edit: No, that's Tim Redding. My bad.
  23. Edgy DC wrote: Redding, a former Met and Bison (this is a lie --- Tim Redding never played for the Mets), took the loss with six runs (four earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Yep, he did. 30 games in 2009.
  24. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I read that they signed him to fill in some innings for the Bisons, and not with Flushing in mind, unless there's an emergency need for a spot starter. He's 40 years old and has started exactly two games since 2008. If it gets that bad, we're in serious trouble.
  25. Sounds like the kind of show that's going to get a lot of hype, win a lot of awards, and start off really promising, but about halfway through, slows down and really kinda sucks at the end.
