  1. Checked Burnitz; topped out at 19. Surprised.
  2. Topps don't care. We spell things the way we want to spell things, bitch.
  3. I specifically pick a non-ugly KMac card and you give me that. I'm still kinda bitter that he never signed a Topps contract until he got here. I want to have Topps go back and make retro cards from 1983-1987 in Padres uniforms for me. (Someone get me a Photoshop expert.)

Vic Sage wrote: when players are on their last year, they are looking for (in commercial real estate parlance) a "blend and extend" deal, in which they forego free agency for a raise IMMEDIATELY and a long term commitment. If the Mets are going to force wright and/or dickey to just play out their current deal, and thus run the risk of injury during the season at below-market prices, there is absolutely no reason for them NOT to go to free agency the following year and take the best deal in the market at that time with a contending team (if that's their priority). The Mets only edge is that they can buy out this last season and lock them up now. If they don't (or won't or can't), then Wright and Dickey are gone after next year, like Reyes, and they should be traded over the winter rather than let them walk away for nothing. No, I'm saying they sign the extension now, but factor that raise into 2014 and beyond, when the financial picture has changed because we've rioted and tossed the Wilpons into Flushing Bay. If they agree to make the average value, say, $20 million a year, then toss in an extra $5 million somewhere along the line to "offset" the "lower" 2013 salary.
  5. How quickly they all forget my favorite Met.
  6. Purely on gut. Dickey A Niese B Santana A- Young C Gee C Hefner C Harvey B Batista D Pelfrey C Mejia D McHugh C E. Ramirez C Familia C Parnell B Hampson D R. Ramirez D Edgin B- Acosta C Carson B- Rauch B Francisco B- Byrdak B- plus you forgot: Schwinden D Beato D Carrasco D Egbert D Olson D Thole C+ Davis B Murphy B Tejada B+ Wright A- Bay F- Torres D Duda C+ Hairston B+ Nieuwenhuis B Baxter C+ Valdespin C+ Cedeno C Turner C Nickeas D Shoppach D Quintanilla C Johnson D Rottino D Lewis D Lutz D Satin D
  7. Right, but Dickey and Wright are paid for 2013. Any new contracts would be for 2014 and beyond, so I don't see how that's germane to that particular discussion. Germane to the fact that they're going to continue to suck next year, yes, but once Santana and Bay are off the books for 2014, suddenly that's a big financial opening.

  9. Difficult rooting for the Mets on my own twitter account while also actively rooting for Koehler on the Stony Brook account.
  10. Nice of Topps, btw, to include Greenberg in the set for next year.
  11. Bought two Update packs on the way in to the office this morning. Among the cards: Harper, Chipper, Jeter, Stanton... and Manny Acosta. UP YOURS, TOPPS.
  12. Gah, yuck the Fankees. This always happens.
  13. Gwreck wrote: Mets Willets Point wrote: Not sure these are good comparisons either. DFJ at 30 was on a team that had 7 World Series appearances in the previous 9 years (and had just missed another WS by one game). CFJ at 30 was on a team that had 11 straight playoff appearances with 3 more to come. The best comparison is finding a team has been dismal for half-a-decade and still hangs on to their best player despite few realistic chances of that malaise ending any time soon. Tony Gwynn in San Diego? Occasional good years (84, 98) and some bad ones in between? Gwynn was my first thought too. Michael Young is a good parallel fitting that definition as well.
  14. Centerfield wrote: Look, as much as we'd love to pretend emotion and loyalty have anything to do with baseball, logically speaking, the Wilpons' decision comes down to only two options: 1. Sign Wright long-term this Winter. 2. Get run over by CF multiple times. Or, better, both.

  16. What the hell was that? (On so many levels, not the least of which was the apparent return of #41 to active circulation.)
  17. I saw this story and I was stunned about YES, but then again, I've never actually watched a game on YES, so I don't know how homery they are.
  18. The comparisons to Wright are Derek Fucking Jeter and Chipper Fucking Jones. Neither one of those organizations would have let either of those fucking guys get away. But this is the fucking Wilpons, so fuck that. Fuck. (NSFW)
  19. RP Tom Koehler: 0-0, 4.70 ERA, 7 2/3 IP, 6 H, 4 R (two two-run home runs in one inning in Milwaukee), 2 BB, 10 K.
  20. I was thinking Hundley, Hodges, Dyer.
  21. Edgy DC wrote: Third-best homegrown lefty starter in Mets' history? Jon Niese, sez Studious Metsimus, in a compelling argument. He even admits that it says more about their history of developing lefties than it does about Niese. If you want to play that game, Josh Thole is no worse than the fourth-best catcher the Mets have ever produced.
  22. Edgy DC wrote: I think selling a vision of the future is probably easier than most sells. You offer me a guaranteed $30 million salary for eight years, I'm more than happy to believe that there will be ice skating on the moon. Egg-zactly. And I'm already on record as saying that Dickey should be dealt.
  23. Edgy DC wrote: I think it's more than a little deceptive if you only count money awarded to free agents. Reyes may seem to be worth every penny he gets by that measure, but not necessarily when you see the productivity one can get out of a pre-arbitration player like Ruben Tejada for pennies on the dollar. Seawolf is arguing $40 million. I honestly think his value to the franchise transcends money, in the Jeterian sense. They spent this weekend watching the Braves suck Chipper's teat, and then they're going to go trade their own guy? EFF THAT. $40M is extreme, obviously, but if he signed a ten-year, $250M deal today, I'd be cartwheeling across the quad.
  24. I wonder if there isn't some cultural inclination here as well; this seems like a very traditional Japanese move to decline the money. Odd as hell here in the States, though.
