Newly promoted Mickey Jannis was a tough story. The guy started in AAA last season, got hit hard in his first two starts, and got returned to Binghamton. He put together a strong season there, but could never get a return call to Las Vegas. So finally, this is the 31-year-old Jannis' next crack at the not-quite-big-time in over a year, and mercy, did they beat on him. They beat him like Jimmy, Henry, and Tommy beating on Billy Batts at the beginning of Goodfellas. They beat him like Miyagi beating the shit out of the Cobra Kai on Halloween. They beat him like Standish and Harlan beat the ever-loving fuck out of Charles Ingalls in the "As Long as We're Together: Part 2" episode of Little House on the Prairie. When the dust cleared, Jannis had given up all 14 runs, 10 earned, in 3 1/3 innings. He yielded three homers, 12 hits, and, well, as much as I'd hate to see him not get another chance, it's hard not to conclude that his water has found its level in AA. Technically, Billy Batts gets beat in the middle of the movie. The beginning only flashes back to him getting stabbed and shot in the trunk.
