  1. why not. he placed 22nd in the mvp voting in 1990, after all.

  3. fman is the standard deviation.
  4. i would advocate murphy for leadoff, but good heavens, his obp is only 0.330!
  5. Valdespin 3.4 Wright 1.9 Parnell 1.4 Buck 1.2 Rice 1.2 Atchison 0.9
  6. Hefner 6.0 Murphy 1.1 Duda 0.8 i had hefner at a whopping eight point five. i don't know what more a guy's gotta do in a game where the offense did jack shit to get a full six points. this was the best game this season thrown by someone who was not matt harvey.
  7. i suppose it's true, but in a general sense, we're typically much more likely to view players' at bats and defensive contributions as discrete units that don't weigh against each other good vs bad, whereas we typically tend to view pitchers performances as a whole.
  8. john buck is getting a lot of love in the 15 inning loss to the fish. it seems to me a bit much for a guy who, while, yes, he knocked in two runs with yet another home run, but he also went 1-7, with 3k's and 6 lob's, including 4 runners left in scoring position to end an inning.

I still think this would make a 'great' (it's a very very low bar) reality show for MLB Network. groups of 30ish year old men and woman that train for a couple of episodes and then try to hit major league pitching. Bring in recently retired pitchers to pitch. You know you'd be intrigued by watching some douchy jock trying to hit Pedro Martinez, who's hamming it up on the mound. meh, pros vs. joes was mostly a disappointment - i think i only watched like three episodes.

  18. it might seem as if i've overindulged on familia in the 4/23 game, but really, with 3 strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of relief, stranding two inherited runners, and with nobody else doing much of anything, his was hte performance of the game. keep in mind, of course, that i generally ignore the score or whether or not a players' performance was in garbage time or clutch time.

  20. so the play log for the john buck throwing out of denard span is curious to me. it was a pitch in the dirt by gee. span takes off for second. buck throws him out by a wide margin. but it doesn't really make the box score. it wasn't credited as a caught stealing. the pitch in the dirt wasn't called a wild pitch or a passed ball. it's just, all of a sudden, there's one less baserunner. i assume buck at least got an assist out of the deal...?
