  1. i'm pretty sure that was not a depleted uranium round. i mean, i'm no expert and i certainly don't recall them mentioning hte type of bullet in the movie, but i don't think they really make small caliber DU rounds. i think the bigger issue is that if you fall offf a train on a high bridge over a narrow river, your momentum is most likely to carry you into the rocky cliff on the near side as you'll maintain most of the same forward velocity as the train when you fell off it, despite whatever kick you received from the impacting projectile.
  2. that might actually help me differentiate...
  3. i love elf
  4. Vic Sage wrote: Dalton didn't do A VIEW TO A KILL. That was Roger Moore's last Bond movie, and it was one of the worst ever made. Dalton did 2 films, LIVING DAYLIGHTS and LICENSE TO KILL. Maybe you've confused the latter one for it. no, i misspoke. meant roger moore. yes, in hindsight, it was pretty bad. but at the time, i rather enjoyed it. fire trucks jumping over drawbridges and all that.
  5. i saw most of these back when there was such a thing as a local video rental store that was not part of some nationwide abomination, and, well, i was a teenager. so i don't have the sharpest recollection of most of them, and what there is may be shaded by the reputation of hte movies and discolored by my own immaturity. for instance, i actually liked timothy dalton's a view to a kill. there was a sweet fire truck jump over a drawbridge there, right?
  6. yeah, i must admit that i was struck by the smallness of hte villain's aims. like, the dude has tremendous computer skillz, has amassed quite a little empire for himself, and all he wants is to kill m? sure, he's done some very bad things along the way, but, sheesh, all we're really exposed to was his mommy issues. okaaayy...
  7. i saw it with the wifey a week or so back. we both enjoyed it very much. i like that it had none of the goofiness of some bond eras. it's been a while since i saw a connery bond, so i'm not terribly able to compare the two. as such, i gave it a 4-star score. it might be better, it might not be, but it really is good. the main villain was excellent. i found hte plot mostly lacking in egregious holes or unnecessary globe-trotting. i thought hte hong kong bit was a touch overwrought and underexplained, but my biggest problem overall was the commuter train punching hole after hole in solid stone walls with nary a scratch or crumple, but, model-making - whatchagonnado. i suppose i should quibble at teh effetiveness of the armor afforded by the excavator in teh opening scene, but worse has surely been committed in teh cinematic stoppage of poorly-aimed bullets. very stylish overall, as you would expect.
  8. i don't dance dirty either. i'm not much of a dancer. also not seen: footloose and fame.
  9. it may well be the best cgi movie i've seen that didn't have the word pixar on it. granted, it did have the word lasseter, so there's that. it felt smart like a pixar flick, but not as deep as you would generally expect from them. not that it's a bad thing. it's no toy story (1 2 or 3) but then, what is? i gave it a 4.5/5, because its just so much fun. and while jack mcbrayer may only have one setting, that one setting is pure gold when all you need is a jack mcbrayer.
  10. movies i [u:3bclie2b]have[/u:3bclie2b] seen from before i was born (1977) The Ten Commandments (1956) Jaws (1975) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) 101 Dalmatians (1961) Ben-Hur (1959) Fantasia (1940) The Godfather (1972) Thunderball (1965) Sleeping Beauty (1959) Pinocchio (1940) Goldfinger (1964) Bambi (1942) The Towering Inferno (1974) Smokey and the Bandit (1977) Lady and the Tramp (1955) Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977/1980) Rocky (1976) i'm pitiful.
  11. I feel like you hear people talking about, quoting, and referencing movies like The Big Lebowski and what not and rarely Titanic or Avatar. But yeah, yeah, nobody ever does that king of the world bit. with 1977 as a cutoff... E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) - i know i've seen it, because i know parts of it scared the shit out of me. i just don't know for certain that i've seen all of it. Titanic (1997) Avatar (2009) Grease (1978) Marvel's The Avengers (2012) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) The Passion of the Christ (2004) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) The Sixth Sense (1999) The Dark Knight Rises (2012) Tootsie (1982) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) The Hunger Games (2012) Spider-Man 3 (2007)
  12. titanic, bladerunner, and the big lebowski come to mind. also, nearly anything in hte past three years. i hear there was this movie with blue aliens, but everybody who watched it had to wear funny glasses. wtf is that all about?
  13. the deathship needs to arbitrate arbitrarily.
  14. hey, all, get your arbitration dollars in asap! time's a-wasting!
  15. of these, i've seen... 47. Starship Troopers (1997) 43. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) - i'm a big big fan of this movie. 36. L.A. Confidential (1997) 34. Seven (1995) - i saw it, but don't remember much of it 33. The Matrix (1999) - thanks, the matrix, for ruining most action movies for the next dozen years 30. The Thin Red Line (1998) - i was underimpressed, but then, i don't really know great cinema. in truth, i remember so very little of this movie. apparently, i watch movies without watching them. 28. Election (1999) - was it this one or rushmore that i couldn't get through? another movie i scarcely recall 21. Fargo (1995) 15. Groundhog Day (1993) - one of my favorites 10. Being John Malkovich (1999) - i also like weird movies like this, and also like john cusack. 9. Rushmore (1998) - was it this one or election that i couldn't get through? i forget 8. Unforgiven (1992) - i'm a little surprised this didn't bring back more westerns. 7. Reservoir Dogs (1992) 3. Toy Story 2 (1999) - seriously... not the first? wow. 2. Pulp Fiction (1994) 1. Goodfellas (1990)
  16. yup. if you do it wrong, the page'll come up with an error. it'd be more helpful if it explained what you did wrong, but, eh, whatchagonnaedo!
  17. arbitration season is open! get in there and jack up the salaries of your opponents' best deals!
  18. yes, but then so did the bot. at least you can relish the opportunity to drop him with vehemence. ... hmm... i think you'll need ceetar to designate clockwork as abandoned. i cannot apparently abandon the team myself. at least, i don't see the button anywhere.
  19. i don't want the moral ambiguity of having to go through the arbitration process twice. i don't think it would be fair to let me assign arbitration dollars against myself (or to allow me not to assign arbitration dollars to myself on behalf of the new owner of the clockwork orange and blues). it also muddies the waters of how i would assign arbitration values to the rest of everybody, i should think.
  20. i like the new arbitration process. it seems more equitable. i'm looking forward to figuring out how to run my team this offseason. also, i think it might be good to acquiesce control of the 'bot's team as soon as reasonably possible. Certainly before the end of the arbitration period. important dates for next year, per the ottoneu website: Start of Arbitration - October 16, 2012 End of Arbitration - November 15, 2012 Keeper Deadline - January 31, 2013 Auction Draft Day - March 24, 2012 12:00 AM Start of Regular Season - TBD Trade Deadline - TBD End of Regular Season - TBD
  21. so, we're doing this again next year, right? i just need to know so i can start agonizing over whether or not to retain my rights to the alpine albatrosses, or perhaps to go all-in with the bot. i [heart] my albatross pitching staff, but golly-gee-willikers, clockwork has some tremendous values on that roster. i think with an undivided attention span during hte draft, he'd be in good shape for next year. my team, well, there's some work my offense needs to do. i've got a lot of dollars tied up in not a lot of production.
  22. open up sortable stats in another window, and select only your team, and the timeframe you care about. be nice if it was more slickly integrated, but it's good enough. pain in the ass when you've gotta manage two teams though...
  23. i think my team is playing all of their games in citi field. the old citi field. only with higher outfield fences and way more fould territory. i have a great rotation and bullpen, but my god, my offense is abysmal. my team, with its 0.324 OBP and 0.426 SLG can barely out-produce daniel murphy.
  24. you can probably take the 'bot's spot next year.
  25. it's definitely clunky and ugly, especially compared to espn and yahoo. and if we only do it for this year, it's going to suck. but i like the power of hte auction drafts and the minor league rosters and the machinations for the cap. i think it's really hard to say how it works until we get through the second year, but so far, a week in, i like it. it would be nice if player news was easier to get to, if at all, but whatev's. it's novel and new and way more hardcore than a casual yahoo thing. also, with the personal investment that each of us had towards the auction, it's hopefully less likely htat we'll have as much fallout as you might see in a typical yahoo league.
