  2. i thought of that, but all the thrust is at the aft end of the ship. it needs something forward of the center of gravity to keep it from just doing massive somersaults everytime it tries to lift off. and the thrusters never move to provide the vectoring, but it could be internal mechanisms instead of external. but there's have to be something noticeable pushing hte thrust around, and i just don't see it, or recall ever seeing it. the same it true for all the other ships in the starwars universe, of course. the starfighters at least there's some plausible control surfaces at play there, but the bigger ships? i guess the ships could all just be generating some invisible propulsive energy field that they can vector into whichever way they seem fit, but there's never anything visible. ah fuck it. that's probably what it is. same stuff that floats the speederbikes, and landspeeders, and what not. its just that you'd think it would lead to some sort of visible distortion when its big enough to move a freighter (or capital ship). a vectorable ion field is what i'm thinking. sure, that's what i'll call it. but i'd like to see it, damnit.
  3. well, sure, all of our fuel is a byproduct of fusion, one way or another. but how does the millenium falcon expend it's fuel to cause itself to turn in an atmosphere, is my question.
  4. the contrails coming off the millenium falcon were pretty cool. probably unrealistic from an aerodynamics standpoint, but cool. i do wonder how well that thing would fly irl. its stabilizing and maneuvering thrusters must use a shitton of fuel. assuming htat's how it steers itself around terrestially, of course, as i see no control surfaces.
  5. i've probably over-invested in relievers in the past few years. though, it hasn't hurt me too much. yet...
  6. ah. sorry, then. i did that the first year of hte league. i forget which player. maybe johnny venters, though i struggle to think of why i would have wanted to keep him at $20. anyways, he blew up his elbow in spring training the follwing season, and has yet to pitch again so it all worked out, ofr me at least. hopefully o'day does not see the same thing happen to his own career.
  7. hmm... there have been some interesting cuts already in the league. players i would definitely (or likely) have kept at their going salaries are being shed left and right. a $3 darren o'day, an $8 drew stubbs, a bargain-priced $17 adrian gonzalez, and even a reasonably priced $26 matt kemp with a fair amount of upside... obviously, difficult decisions are being made, and i'm myself not yet ready to make my own massive mistakes. thanks to all your arbitration efforts, i've got some hard work to do. jerks.
  8. i [u:1te3x9vy]knew [/u:1te3x9vy]it!
  9. Brettanomyces Tart-ans (this is a beer joke) - Ceetar Greenpoint Lunchladies - mbtn01 Alpine Albatrosses - Mets Marathon smg58 - Not sure who this is. 10. toy story 4: mommy, where do toys come from?
  11. tick. tock. tick. tock. time is rapidly running out to punish my roster. i mean, i'm okay with not having my guys escalate in cost too rapidly. i just figured some of you might not be feeling the same way...
  12. "let it go" is still minimm's favorite song. i'm a little surprised that he doesn't want to e anything frozen-themed for halloween, nor for his birthday.
  13. alrighty, i've got us a player!
  14. don't forget! arbitration season opens today! (be gentle!) should we look into getting a replacement for the cornballers? if so, should we have it in place before we conclude arbitration? i may have a friend who would be interested.
  15. Ceetar wrote: Congrats. I imagine Jordan's no-hitter helped. Yeah, looks like we need at least one player. Dunno if anyone is interested internally. actually, it didn't. i'd maxed out my innings, on friday, i think. i had three starters projected for friday, and started them all in the hopes that i didn't hit the 1500 inning cap before the last one (wacha) started his game. if i'd've paid a little more attention, i might've been able to hold off until yesterday, when i also had 3 starters projected, but i didn't want to run the risk of having starters not start due to playoff rest, or other last game of the season silliness. as it stands, i only just barely snuck wacha's innings in in time.
  16. whew! for a good long time there, i was worried that the difference between first and second place was going to come down to one player. steve fucking pearce. ho played like a house on fire until i picked him up mid-season, then promptly slumped for a good long month, looking like the scrub he'd ever been. then i drop him to make room for an up and coming shortstop, or maybe jake lamb, i forget, and suddenly he's on fire again. dick! i'm glad hte giants made the playoffs and held off pitching bumgarner last night, or i'd surely have lost hte strikeout title to muddy chickens. thanks, everybody, for a great season! are we still going to be needing a new player for next year, to assume control of the corndogs? i might know a guy who'd be interested.
  17. My offense seems to be comin on of late. I'm not sure how much higher there is time for me to climb but here's hoping...! I'm worried a bit about losing the strikeout lead. I don't have many innings left...
  18. this season seems like its going to be a real barn-burner right until the end. Quite a difference from what it looked like in july, eh? [grumble grumble] troy tulowitzki [/grumble grumble]
  19. third place?! what the shit is this?!
  20. i have miggy and zimmerman at third, and miggy, morneau, and davis at first. i really need some outfield power....
  21. Damnit, second place! My kingdom for a home run hitter...
  22. metsmarathon wrote: i have 3 pitchers and 1 position player on my payroll (either salaried or as a cap-hit) who have undergone tommy john surgery this year: patrick corbin (60-day DL) josh johnson (cut) bruce rondon (cut) and miguel sano stupid ligaments... add matt weiters to the "needs tjs" bandwagon. and poorly-performing reliever sergio santos just hit the dl with forearm tightness. will he give me a cool half dozen?
  23. yeah, i'd read that pretty much just before making my comment. also, the other day, minimm had stated that only boys are allowed to play star wars. after i told him that girls could play, too, if they wanted, offering up princess leia as a person they could be (and also stating that a girl could play as luke skywalker, or yoda, or darth vader, if she wanted), minimm countered that a girl could also be luke's mom. mind you, he hasn't seen the prequels, so doesn't really know that padme amidala is a viable character. i think he was referring to either aunt beru, or possibly just the theoretical mom that luke must surely have. meaning, there are no roles for women in the original star wars universe, especially as presented in the first two movies (IV and V), beyond either princess leia or a generic female. it was then that i realized i'm glad i only have boys.
  24. that galaxy far, far away sure is a sausage fest, isn't it?
  25. i both liked it, and i didn't care for it, all at the same time. i felt frequently like i had no idea who the actual protagonist of hte film was, and also who the antagonist was. it seemed more a story wherein a bunch of stuff happens, and there are people there too, some of whom influence and direct the outcome, but their roles are muddled. i supose that in a more sophisticated film, that migt be a good thing. but in this one, it just felt unfocused. maybe i'm just not that good at watching movies...? the troll-rocks, though they played an integral role in the whole mythology of the film, only seemed to detract from it. also, they scared minimm in the theater. and i did hand-wring at the time that the whole pivotal let it go song was kinda saying, "move past your doubts and insecurities - you too can be sexed up, bitchy bad girl if that's what you really want" but that all said, it's not bad, or mind-numbing, or stupid, or unclever. nor is it awash in (most of) the typical princess tropes. the only one that stands is that princesses must be dead sexy. i loved olaf. and liked the dude with the reindeer whose name i forget. (them and the trolls were clear concessions to boys, who may have come to the movie thinking it more about snowmen and reindeer than two bratty girls) anna is a good role model, for what limited use you may find movie role models to be, but the focus of the key song that all the girls are singing is elsa being an anti-role model - again, hand-wringing - and elsa never seems to have a reckoning where she truly and deeply apologizes for the trouble she caused.. its like, gee, you froze the whole damned kingdom, built a giant ice castle of isolationism, had your snow monsters nearly kill me, and, because of all this shit you started some jackass with a broadsword would have cut me to pieces if only i didn't turn to ice as a result of your magical snow-powers, but since i saved your life by attempting to sacrifice my own, we're cool now. was there any remorse, like, ever? and, after rewatching the movie in pre-K, minimm had a few nights of nightmares about being frozen by elsa. so i guess, my final verdict is, kinda good, not bad, with warts, and it scared my kid a little.
