  1. I'm penciling him in for 10 homers and 55 MRI's.

  3. And this is why they'd never re-sign Castro. He dogged it on many an occasion in his previous tour with the Mets. He wants someone who's got something to prove, in order to push Thole. This is what the Rob Johnsons of the world are for.
  4. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Prior to the celebration the Mets intend to load the bases on a walk, a bloop single and Jeff Kent error. I lol'd.
  5. Not as good as Lenny Harris, which is not very good at all.

  7. Everyone seems to assume Murphy playing second and batting second. While I agree he's a good second place hitter, he will be a flaming, Krakatoa-East-of-Java, disaster in the middle of this infield. At least he will be for the 30 games he plays before he gets hurt again. Tell me that you won't be cringing every time a ball gets hit to second.
  8. The Mets starting outfield for 2012 is shaping up with Jason Bay, Andres Torres and Lucas Duda manning the starting sports and right-handed hitter Scott Hairston coming off the bench. The fifth and final outfield spot looks to be up for grabs between Loewen and fellow lefty Mike Baxter. Man, it's gonna be a long year.
  9. I got hitting tips from Mickey Brantley, who was hilarious. Told me I was gripping the bat too tightly and to treat it like it was a part of female anatomy that you, ahem, wouldn't grip as tightly. I was 3 for 10 so I guess it worked. Lot of competition for the batting cages so getting there early was key.
  10. I went in 2002. It's the most fun you can have with your clothes on. I played for Duffy Dyer's team. Played LF, RF and first. Even pitched an inning, ended my career with a 18.00 ERA, and treasured every second. On the final day in the big stadium, faced Bob Apodaca. First pitch, swing and a miss. Second pitch took for a ball, Grounded the third pitch to short and the throw just barely beat me. And by 'just barely' I mean 10 feet.
  11. I've always felt that people deserve their privacy. And I'm a lousy stalker anyway. I like it when someone famous can walk around like a normal person, which is something you can do better in New York than just about anywhere else. (I imagine Mike likes it, too.)
  12. Actually saw Mike on the street last month, walking down Broadway not far from my office. He was alone, no posse. I'd already passed him when it registered ('Holy Sh*t, that's Mike Piazza!'). Thought about turning around and saying something but I figured his days are full of middle-aged fanboys like me gushing over him like giddy schoolgirls. So I walked on.

  14. Radio is a much different talent than TV. Not everybody can do it. Former athletes are color guys generally, not play-by-play guys. Ever heard Keith do PBP? Neither have I. I heard Ron do it once, and while I love the guy, he was horrible. On radio, you're describing all the action all the time. One of the complaints about Hagin is that he's terrible at describing the action. On TV that can be glossed over because you've got pictures and replays. Not on radio. Howie needs someone who he can play off of. Hagin just wasn't that guy, he wasn't steeped in the Metliness that's needed to announce games for this starcrossed franchise. Someone who gets his jokes and his New York area references. While I'm not a big Ed Coleman fan, I'd rather see him get it than some guy with good pipes from Dallas or Seattle. Burkhardt strikes me as a guy who doesn't want to be locked up in the radio booth for nine innings. I have a feeling that after a few months he'd hate his job and we'd hate his performance at it.
  15. Howie needs a Met fan to play off of. Someone who knows the history of the franchise and will understand Howie's jokes. Oh, and someone who can describe the action clearly, concisely and who sounds like he cares about whether the Mets win or lose. I have no idea who that person is. That's the job of the Mets HR Department. Wayne Hagin sometimes sounded like he was stuck at an airport and forced to keep talking for three hours or his connecting flight to St. Louis would never arrive. There was very little joy in his delivery, and very little of the gobsmacked holy-shit-I can't believe-they screwed-up-that-badly feeling when they kicked a game away.
  16. You lend money to the Mets knowing that if they're forced to sell the team, it'll sell for enough to make you whole. There's no real downside risk. That's why Bud's not sweating his $25 million. The '$20 million investors' are what I can't figure. I'm imagining the conversation: "So if I give you twenty million dollars, what do I get in return?" "The thanks of a grateful Fred Wilpon." "That's it?" "Yup, that's it." "Gee, where do I sign?"

  18. Ruben has no speed to speak of. He's not an ideal leadoff guy. Just like every Met catcher they trot out there is no Piazza, Tejada will always suffer the unfavorable comparison to Jose Reyes.
  19. He was damn good in his Mets days. He was a very good predictor of the action. He'd yell at Strawberry for playing too deep seconds before a bloop single would dunk in front of him. His sense of humor played well with Kiner and Zabriskie. But then he went to Fox and became a part of the 'We have determined a story line in our pre-game meeting and we're going to stick with it regardless of what happens in the game' machine. He became repetitive and predictable. His fellating of St. Jeter is legendary. He lost his fastball and now he's more annoying than anything else. So yeah, he deserves it for his Mets days.
  20. I knew this was coming. I knew there was no way they'd match the money Reyes could command on the open market. I'd steeled myself against it. But it still hurts.
  21. On the plus side, plenty of good seats available at Citi next year.
  22. He flitted across the surface of Metdom like a pond skimmer, never sinking, never leaving a ripple, ultimately disappearing without a trace.
  23. I gotta say, those are some scary looking women. Jordana Lenz looks like a serial killer. She's got those dead eyes that convey an utter lack of remorse for her crimes against humanity.
  24. NA meeting? North America? Not Applicable? And I guess bible study is better than crack pipe study.
